Moving at a snail's pace off the UP Elevator Lead and onto KCT Track 354 is UP train YKS75R-08 with a transfer from UP's 18th St. Yard to BNSF's Argentine Yard led by a pair of SD40N's. I have more photos of the Acorn Woodpecker more than any other bird. They live in my "back yard" so to speak, and so it's been relatively easy to find them. The same can't be true for getting good shots.

The Acorn Woodpeckers are oddballs in many ways, but the weirdest habit is to cache acorns. Their lives are built around acorns. It's as though they went through the Great Depression and want to make certain thatt hey never run out of food even though acorns are low in nutritional value. There's a newer video on line of a pest control company opening a wall in a home near where I and the woodpeckers live. Over 700 pounds of acords were cached by one family in just one wall!

When it comes to drilling holes for the acorns in oak trees, they are initially very careful about spacing and which trees and which limbs. Then, they drill small, medium, and larger holes into which they hammer the acorns. And after a tree is almost full, they will spend years rearranging acorns moving some that have expanded dure to moisture into larger holes, and some which have dried in the heat into smaller holes. And they are always drilling.

This image shows another habit, actually a habit of many woodpeckers. But it is odder for the Acorn Woodpecker. This pecker is listening for insects and grubs under the bark. Fully a third of the diet of the acoirn woodpecker is protien; very little is acorns. Anyway, watch birds that climb the trunks and large branches of trees. They will stop, cock their heads listening, and then drill out the grubs that are so essential to their success. The average lifespan of an Acorn Woodpecker is 11-12 years; the longest lives was 17 years, 10 months. They must be doing something right.

This seafront house in our neighbourhood has been removed from its foundations this summer and in my photo has just been loaded onto a barge, ready to be floated to a new location on one of the nearby Gulf Islands of B.C.. In its place a new house, probably even bigger than this one, is already under construction as of December 2020.

The date was chosen by the local house-relocation specialists, Nickel Bros., as there was an extremely high tide enabling an almost flat ramp from shore to barge. Tugs involved in keeping the barge steady were the 'Westco Monarch' and 'Bill L Ledcor'.

Some of the U.S. and Canadian Gulf Islands are visible in the distance on my photo.

Location is Ten Mile Point, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

The aspens have dropped their attire, and the alders are quickly following suit along Cold Creek in Sierra County. The earth here is rapidly approaching the "quiet season," as so eloquently described by my Flickr contact Peter. It's time to stack the wood, caulk the windows, and fill the pantry. I'm ready to settle in for a long quiet winter's nap. Wake me up when the first spring buds begun to show.

Mural "Moving" by Megan Oldhues at Vrijheidsstraat 63, Oostende in the context of 'The Crystal Ship Oostende - 2025'.

-------------------

-----------------

The Crystal Ship sets course for change in 2025, with ‘change’ as the common thread.

Canadian Megan Oldhues describes her style as painterly muralism – and you can see that right away. Her murals are reminiscent of still lifes and evoke memories of the great masters of painting.

Her mural shows a woman in the middle of a move – a symbol of change. She experiences the physical aspect of the pressure of change, with objects and their tangibility, rather than the mental aspect of change.

for many years my garden was a shrubbery flic.kr/p/Lhv9ag which i loved. a picket fence covered in an ivy hedge coming down in a storm flic.kr/p/2gnCyih meant that over time changes had to happen flic.kr/p/2mn2x8a i'll be glad when the trellis is covered in honeysuckle and jasmine. that's the plan ...

Taken at Deutsches Technikmuseum. They have a big display with rotating LEDs. As the room is fairly dark, I made these patterns by moving and twisting the camera.

This is likely to be my last post on here. I think its time to make a break of it as I've found I spend very little time on here anymore. Going forward I don't think I can be arsed to go through deleting old photos to make room for new ones every time I want to post.

I've also found any interactions I have on here have disappeared and I'm not necessarily inclined to look through others photos as much as I used to. That's primarily on me as if I'm online its usually over on Instagram instead.

Anyhoo, hopefully everyone has a lovely Christmas/Holidays etc and maybe I'll see you on the other side.

xx
