Mono prints
Since last year I have been interested in exploring ideas involving the universe, space and our scientific discoveries and theories. I am inspired by quantum physics, theories of multiple dimensions of space-time and the ideas of parallel universes.
With this mono print I show colourful planets of different sizes and many small astronauts in a swirl around one another. They are printed in a semi-circle shape to create a sense of movement that is growing from inside out into eternal space. The planets represent different worlds and the astronauts are all copies of each other. With this, I aim to visualise the idea of parallel universes: an astronaut being in many worlds at the same time. The questions that I aim to provoke are such as “Are there different copies of our world?” And if so, “Are there different copies of ourselves?”
The title is “Is there enough space?” Most people are searching for their personal identity, their own space in the world. However, while trying to find this uniqueness we share the same space. Hence, on a more individual level my question is “Is there enough space for so many copies of one and the same?”..
Mono Lake (/ˈmoʊnoʊ/ MOH-noh) is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. These salts also make the lake water alkaline.
This desert lake has an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp that thrive in its waters, and provides critical habitat for two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp and alkali flies. Historically, the native Kutzadika'a people derived nutrition from the Ephydra hians pupae, which live in the shallow waters around the edge of the lake.
When the city of Los Angeles diverted water from the freshwater streams flowing into the lake, it lowered the lake level, which imperiled the migratory birds.
Mono Lake is a 13 mile wide "Saline Soda Lake." Containing 280 million tons of dissolved salts Mono Lake's water levels have rapidly been reduced over the last 100 years. Water was diverted away from the lake to provide for the booming city of Los Angeles resulting in unsubmerged alkaline sands, tufa towers and forcing out many of the lake's animal residents.
