Mono Lake (/ˈmoʊnoʊ/ MOH-noh) is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in a basin that has no outlet to the ocean. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. These salts also make the lake water alkaline.

The term "Mono" is derived from "Monachi", a Yokut term for the tribes that live on both the east and west side of the Sierra Nevada.

"Mono Lake lies in a lifeless, treeless, hideous desert, eight thousand feet above the level of the sea, and is guarded by mountains two thousand feet higher, whose summits are always clothed in clouds. This solemn, silent, sail-less sea--this lonely tenant of the loneliest spot on earth --is little graced with the picturesque. It is an unpretending expanse of grayish water, about a hundred miles in circumference, with two islands in its centre, mere upheavals of rent and scorched and blistered lava, snowed over with gray banks and drifts of pumice-stone and ashes, the winding sheet of the dead volcano, whose vast crater the lake has seized upon and occupied.

The lake is two hundred feet deep, and its sluggish waters are so strong with alkali that if you only dip the most hopelessly soiled garment into them once or twice, and wring it out, it will be found as clean as if it had been through the ablest of washerwomen's hands. "

The company produces the Mono, a single seater road-legal sports car launched in 2011. Engineers from Cosworth, Hewland, Sachs, AP and Kumho Tires partnered with designers at BAC.

The Mono uses carbon fibre composite construction over a steel chassis (with FIA compliant rollover structure) inspired by the construction principles employed in DTM race cars. The nose of the vehicle provides a storage compartment and doubles as impact protection.

The Mono is powered by a 2.3-litre four-cylinder Cosworth engine producing 285 bhp (213 kW; 289 PS) and 206 lb·ft (279 N·m), a heavily modified Ford Duratec. The engine is mounted longitudinally to maintain the centralised balance of the car. The car runs a F3-specification six-speed sequential gearbox developed by Hewland. This gearbox operates a semi-automatic transmission tuned to complete gear shifts in 35 milliseconds. These specifications result in a 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 170 mph (274 km/h).

2011 © David White Photography. Please do not use without permission. Mono Lake is at least 700,000 years old and one of the oldest continuously existing lakes on the American continent. Fed by huge glaciers during the last Ice Age, Mono Lake was 60 times larger than the 66 square miles it covers today.

Mono Lake is naturally salty and alkaline because it has no outlet. The only way water leaves is via evaporation. The Sierra streams that flow into Mono contain only trace amounts of minerals and salts but those minerals and salts stay and their concentrations, over the years, grow.

The City of Los Angeles, hundreds of miles to the south, has been diverting water from the Mono Basin since 1941. That diversion has cut the lake volume in half and has doubled its alkalinity and salinity. An extended court fight has finally stopped the water diversion and Mono Lake is once again growing--albeit slowly.

Mono Lake is a geologist's paradise. It is ringed by volcanoes--new and old. Two of the islands on the lake are volcanic domes. No area volcanoes are active at the moment but the area shows many signs of potential eruptions.

Perhaps the most intriguing of Mono Lake's phenomena are the tufa (pronounced "toofah") towers visible along much of the shoreline. Tufa are made from calcium carbonate which makes its way into the lake from underground springs. The calcium and carbonate combine to form limestone which builds up over time around the lake bottom spring openings. Declining lake levels have exposed the tufa towers we see today. Some of these tufa towers are up to 30 feet high.

Upon first glance, it would seem that Mono Lake is lifeless. Far from it, Mono supports a simple but amazingly productive food chain. At the bottom of that chain are microscopic, single-celled algae. The algae serves as food for two other species--brine shrimp and brine flies which, in turn, serve as the major food source for literally millions of water birds. It's estimated that some 85% of California's seagulls started their life here at Mono Lake. There are at least 80 species of water fowl that call Mono Lake home. (Grateful to others for the detailed info about Lake Mono.)

Mono Lake is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The lake covers an area of approximately 60 mi2. The lake is at an elevation of 6384.5 ft. The lake has existed for at least a million years. The saline lake is supplied by streams from the Sierra Nevada. These streams also bring salt and other minerals to the lake. The salt and minerals remain after the lake water has evaporated. Mono Lake has a salinity 2.5 times the ocean because of the long-term accumulation of salt (CA 2-3).

Mono Lake is home to green algae, alkali flies (Artemia monica), and brine shrimp (Artemia monica). The flies and shrimp are a source of food for migratory birds. An example are the approximately 50,000 California gulls (Larus californicus) migrate to nest. Mono Lake is the largest nesting colony for these gulls in California (CA 3).

Mono Lake are the remnants of a larger fresh water lake named Lake Russell. Lake Russel existed in the Pleistocene epoch of the geological time scale. The islands of Negit and Paoha in the center of the lake formed due to a volcanic eruption approximately 300 years ago (USGS).

Viven algas verde, moscas akalino (Artemia monica), y camarónes (Artemia monica).

Mono Lake in California is a large saline water body. It reminded me to the Dead Sea in Israel or Jordan, however, Mono Lake still supports a higher level of life. The picture shows so called tufa towers that were once freshwater springs. Today they look more of historic ruins from the ancient time.

Mono Lake (/ˈmoʊnoʊ/ MOH-noh) is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. These salts also make the lake water alkaline.

This desert lake has an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp that thrive in its waters, and provides critical habitat for two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp and alkali flies. Historically, the native Kutzadika'a people derived nutrition from the Ephydra hians pupae, which live in the shallow waters around the edge of the lake.

When the city of Los Angeles diverted water from the freshwater streams flowing into the lake, it lowered the lake level, which imperiled the migratory birds.
