Goldcrests are pesky and just do not stop flitting around at lightning speed...so I was surprised to get a shot of this one taking a momentary breather!!😁 There was also a Firecrest charging around ...which I'd never seen before and was beautiful....but even by my standards those shots are way too blurry to upload!!😂😂

Nearly three months separates the photos in this composite. Yet it feels like much less in my increasingly contorted perspective of time. As a child I would sometimes spin in circles. I loved the momentary sense of imbalance before my senses fell back into rhythm. The passage of time gives me the a similar sense of imbalance. However these days the normal rhythm is never fully restored. I stumble from one season into the next with a failing sense of comprehension about the progression.

Photography at least provides me with a tangible set of way posts to mark my journey. My phone in particular offers an amazing visual tracking of life moments. I often cross through the camera roll quickly. It creates a weird motion blur where you can't really focus on a single image. Rather I discern only shapes and colors that correlate in part to the season in which the pictures were taken. Another trick is to zoom way out until hundreds of photos appear in miniature. Love seeing my recent life translated into to a mosaic, billions of pixels. Individually indiscernible, but collectively representing my daily experiences on the pathway of life.

Standing on the edge off this woodland pond the other day, I was struck by the cold and barren bleakness. I thought back to that brilliant October day when I stood in this exact same spot. The scene literally burst into vibrant and joyous color. This composite conveys that joy, but in a shocking, even disturbing juxtaposition. It put me in mind of the explosion of an underwater depth charge. Yet another unwanted time marker passing me by.

Nothing is more memorable than a smell. One scent can be unexpected, momentary and fleeting, yet conjure up a childhood summer beside a lake in the mountains.

"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

Leaving Yarmouth for a moment, this road side wonder required a momentary pullout. The light on a field off a secondary road caught my attention, as it danced like a whirling dervish. I set my tripod down and watched as this dance of light continued to move about on nature's stage. When I was better able to predict its movement because of the clouds, my tripod was set accordingly. Now waiting on this dancer to land in place, the moment of truth was seconds away.

When it landed on the distant trees, they changed color and became the main subject. No longer just a contributing element, instead they were under the "spot light" and the "Sufi Man", or dancer of the Dervish. As well, today is post #4,000 and I thank you for the many visits,

16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

This photograph captures a momentary break in the clouds that allowed the rising moon to peek through the gloom.

Below the moon a layer of cloud lies over the alps which are colored orange by the setting sun. Above it, dark clouds remain to remind us of a wet and gloomy afternoon. To the bottom left, a patch of sunlight reflects of of the snow on the distant hills.

For a brief second, this female Northern Cardinal obliged me with a momentary pose and a smirk that seems to say she really didn't have to time to wait around for slowpoke humans when other birds were already at the feeders gobbling up everything before she could get there!

For me the visual height of a storm precedes its arrival. It's often heralded by a slight diminution of sunlight. Not the momentary kind caused by a passing cloud. It's more of a change of tone or atmosphere. It's the kind of thing you feel as much as see with your eyes. Many a time it's that subtle shift of light that has caused me to stop whatever I'm doing and contemplate the sky. It's one of those things of which that I will never tire. The progression of sky from calm to anger. So often the most menacing clouds roll in well in advance of the actual storm. And this liminal space is generally not a solid mass, but highly textured and broken. Thick clouds intermix with thin ones, and at time even clear sky emerges. Light changes constantly from dark shadow to diffuse glow and even moments of direct sunlight. Dramatic backlighting flares up and just as suddenly vanishes. It's these continual variations that thrill me. And being able to convey the storm as an entity rather than just a monolith of darkness. Shooting in these conditions tends to be even more spontaneous than usual. This figurine of the Virgin Mary struck me as more emotive than I'd seen it before. Everything is a matter or perception, and that's a view that changes with circumstances. Maybe I hadn't seen it in quite the same light before, or with the turbulent background. Here I saw the downcast face seemingly oblivious to the gathering storm behind her. And the weathered, pitted and lichen-encrusted surface revealed the effects of the many storms that had preceded this one. And maybe the resignation that many more will follow. But in this moment a break in the clouds appeared and transformed the entire scene; ope somehow coexisting with despair.

I waited and waited for the sun to break through the clouds enough to illuminate the rock faces on the canyon walls. Perseverence was rewarded with a momentary break before the sun was shrouded for good this morning.

Had one of those off flashbacks the other morning as I made may way through the back woods in the aftermath of year another snowstorm. Every single tree branch was ensconced in a thick layer of fluffy snow. Every now and again, a puff of wind would dislodge some of the snow. The result was a myriad of tiny flakes that seemed to hover in midair, backlit by the morning sun. My mind immediately conjured up the image of a snow globe I had as a kid. One of those clear plastic domes filled with liquid and a bunch of plastic snowflakes. You'd give it a shake and the flakes were brought into momentary suspension, creating a miniature blizzard inside the dome. The flakes would swirl about and eventually settle back down on the little farmhouse and trees in the base of the dome. Living in a northern climate, I've had many occasions to experience the real-life version of the snow globe. Over the years, the magic of winter tends to be ground down to a nub. The adult mind gets preoccupied with the effects of snow and loses sight of the wonder and even awe we felt as children. I'm no different; winter becomes a hassle in terms of driving, shoveling, and the pure expedition mentality required for even simple tasks such as shopping and walking the dog. With all of that comes a mental beat-down effect, a sort of winter weariness that creeps in as winter progresses. But sometimes the magic is rekindled, if only momentarily. For me, seeing the back woods transformed into my childhood snow globe did the trick.
