March 3, 1966: “A flash of sanity: the momentary realization that there is no need to come to certain conclusions about persons, events, conflicts, trends, even trends toward evil and disaster, as if from day to day and even from moment to moment I had to know and declare (at least to myself) that this is so and so, this is good and this is bad. We are heading for a “new era” or we are heading for destruction. What do such judgments mean? Little or nothing. Things are as they are in an immense whole of which I am a part and which I cannot pretend to grasp. To say I grasp it is immediately put myself in a false position, as if I were “outside” it. Whereas to be in it is to seek truth in my own life and action, moving where movement is possible and keeping still when movement is unnecessary, realizing that things will continue to define themselves and that judgments and mercies of God will clarify themselves and will be more clear to me if I am silent and attentive, obedient to His will, rather than constantly formulating statements in this age which is smothered in language, in meaningless and inconclusive debate in which, in the last analysis, nobody listens to anything except what agrees with his own prejudices.”
- Thomas Merton - Exploring Solitude and Freedom from The Intimate Merton, March 3, 1966
Have we awoken?
from the day still assimilating
and the dreams undone
by a reality quashing
at every turn
Have we arisen?
from the night's 'cloison'
of momentary escapism
a modest offer of tonic
after the day ran dry
Have we woken?
from the present malaise
the world we never see
shut away, or closed-out
run aground in a prized clout
Have we risen?
now that nature atones
once again, our saviour
and presage of peace
let the true day now begin~~!

For some unknown reason, this young bull moose went into a momentary frenzy, vigorously splashing around in the lake for a few seconds. A fun performance to witness. I would like to have had a higher shutter speed for this one but up until this moment, the moose was moving slowly and stopping occasionally. I didn't expect him to go crazy...
A Zen moment occurs for me when I find myself momentarily free from worry and expectation. Unfortunately it tends to be only momentary. I guess that's why they call it a "moment." I'd much prefer a Zen multi mega moment.

The last rays of sun before sunset lovingly illuminate these almond blossoms in Madrid. It is the image of an early Spring that has burst forth strongly with maximum temperatures close to 68F (20ºC) and sunny skies.
For the rest of the week, a momentary return to Winter is predicted, because although it may not seem like it, we are still in February.
I hope you enjoy this Tuesday.

This is a word I don't think we even fully understand most of the time. It is not just a slight momentary improvement in a tough situation, but rather a radical and life changing reality. This is the word I would use to describe Christ's work in me. It was not just a small and momentary change, but a lifelong impact. I will never be the same as I was before! The power and sheer force of the ONE whom I have encountered can never be forgotten. It isn't a gentle rustling of the leaves by the wind, but a never ending wind as strong as a hurricane and the highest wave of a tsunami that cannot ever be tamed or stopped! His power and His presence is a BREAKTHROUGH so powerful, no human word can even describe it. I invite you by His command to obey His words to you, "Follow Me!"
It is now the depths of winter here in Melbourne, and it has been the coldest winter since 1947. The other day when I went to hand deliver a birthday card, as I was walking back, there was a break in the rainclouds and showers long enough to give me some sunshine and blue skies, and I walked past a garden full of bright purple and magenta salvias. A raindrop glinting in the sunlight on the tip of a purple salvia caught my eye, and as I always carry my little camera with me, I stopped to photograph it. Everywhere I looked, there were salvias that looked like they had been dressed in millions of diamonds as they sparkled in the momentary burst of sunlight. The vibrant colour in the bloom is very striking, and the way it is covered in raindrops, makes this salvia a real bejewelled beauty.

On Wednesday, I saw a psychedelic band that straddled the line between psych pop and shoegaze. This is a very talented band on the way to the UK, Netherlands, France and Belgium so have a listen if you're interested. Unfortunately, the only lighting they had was backlighting and, though it helped set the mood, it made it nearly impossible to get any clear shots of them where you could distinguish facial features so I was pretty much in anguish not being able to capture them properly.
This band's new album, Illuminator is great but it's more on the pop end of things so I still prefer their debut, Momentary Presence. Have a listen here:

We attended a science fiction festival in Bartow, Florida, recently and encountered several interesting costumes. It seemed that anyone I pointed my camera at was willing to strike a momentary pose . . . and I thank each of them. I am not certain which science-fiction character this gentleman is dressed up to be, but my title is my interpretation.
'Save up all the days,
A routine malaise,
Just like yesterday,
I told you I would stay.
Would you always?
Maybe sometimes?
Make it easy?
Take your time.
Think of all the ways,
Momentary phase,
Just like yesterday,
I told you I would stay.'

A momentary respite from my holiday snaps :-)
A photograph doesn't tell me how the breeze felt on my skin, how it rippled the grass and sounded in the trees, or how the clouds tumbled and turned. (Jean LeGassick)
This is a photo of refraction patterns as seawater flows over a shallowly submerged coastal rock. I love the contrasting play between the light brown/golden highlights and the darker gray areas, and how this momentary configuration of movement in the surf has given rise to these undulating light patterns.
We really haven't had any serious snow up to this point but when half a meter came down in 24 hrs, it brought everything to an abrupt halt. There's more coming tonight and I read somewhere that we have a momentary interlude between the streamers coming off the still unfrozen lakes - a "snow squall sandwich," they called it. .
I had been waiting for hours, camera in hand, for the perfect shot of a hummingbird. I had set up my equipment near a slender branch where the bird was known to perch, and I had timed its visits to the area to be every 15 to 20 minutes. I knew that I had to be patient and still if I wanted to capture the bird's delicate features and intricate coloring. Finally, the hummingbird arrived, and I held my breath as I snapped the picture. I felt a sense of satisfaction and joy as I reviewed the image on my camera screen.
Nature is truly amazing, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to capture its beauty through my lens.

Quickly the train passed by, passed by me and i am like the station, not knowing whether to bid farewell or greet the people.

“How delicate and fleeting it all seems, everything struggling just to exist. You feel a kind of melancholic trance sweeping over you. A rush of clarity, as if you’ve shaken yourself out of a dream. You are here. You are alive. You are in it.”
—John Koenig, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows
When we were sitting on the rocks at Lighthouse Point and as noted in the previous shot, this appeared behind me. My wife was sitting by me reading her book when she looked up to see Mt Baker, Washington, appear over Vancouver, BC. This is not a great photo but rather a unique one.
After she drew my attention to this momentary phenomena, I grabbed for my longer lens, shot off 2 frames and checked the histograms. Severely underexposed, I made the appropriate adjustments and shot off 2 more. Hoping one would prove useful, this is the best result. It is hand held and considering I do not have IS or VR, normally a tripod would have been in service. However, I braced myself as best I could and thought, sometimes you just do your best. In only 3 minutes, the opportunity was gone and Mt Baker could no longer be seen from our vantage point.
Located within the grounds of Lauriston Castle - dating back to the 16th century - in north-west Edinburgh, the Kyoto Friendship Garden was created to celebrate the twinning of the city of Edinburgh and the prefecture of Kyoto in Japan back in 2002. The Kyoto Prefecture is located in the Kansai region of Honshu, the largest and most populated of the the islands of Japan.
Designed by Takashi Sawano, its official name is the ‘Castle Garden to Water and Beyond’. The northern extent of the garden features several avenues of traditional blossom trees, a miniature pond and, at particular instances, momentary glances towards Cramond Island which lies in the Firth of Forth beyond.

The wind assures me that I am not alone, her presence felt that of a loyal companion.
And in a momentary silent, I felt a soft gentle brush against my cheeks.
Warm, tender, safe... you...
