Perfect lighting from a momentary flash in time

We were driving up above this lake during a very cloudy period. I looked over just as there was a momentary break in the clouds casting sunlight over the point. A beautiful moment.

A momentary pause from its manic activity in the bright sunshine at Newstead & Annesley CP, a former colliery site in Nottinghamshire (UK) (7565)

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

With heavy cloud cover moving in, I catch a momentary break just as the daily Escalante Western unit coal train pulls parallel with New Mexico Highway 509. The train is heading north towards the El Segundo Mine on BNSF's Lee Ranch Subdivision, led by two of Western Fuels Association's three former B&O SD40s, upgraded by Morrison Knudsen to -3 standards.

This view illustrates how disappointingly little of this line can be seen from public property. Just about everything around here is private ranch lands or railroad property, with bits of the Navajo Nation sprinkled about.

This little Douglas Fir tree is about 40-50 years old. It has survived countless weather events by growing on top of a floating log in a lake on Vancouver Island. It is apparently the most photographed tree in Canada. We had not planned on visiting this iconic scene simply because so many people from around the world have tried to photograph it. Conditions have to be just right in order to separate the tree from background clutter and unless you have hip waders, there is no good vantage point to shoot this tree. We had no hip waders and very little time to wait for the right conditions. However, on our quick morning visit to see the tree on our way to our next destination, I was able to frame up this portrait with a long lens just as a bit of light hit the tree and there was a momentary stillness in the light breeze rippling the water. The background is the water with refections. It was magical to see this little survivor. Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday.

Fall Song by Mary Oliver

Another year gone, leaving everywhere

its rich spiced residues: vines, leaves,

the uneaten fruits crumbling damply

in the shadows, unmattering back

from the particular island

of this summer, this NOW, that now is nowhere

except underfoot, moldering

in that black subterranean castle

of unobservable mysteries - roots and sealed seeds

and the wanderings of water. This

I try to remember when time's measure

painfully chafes, for instance when autumn

flares out at the last, boisterous and like us longing

to stay - how everything lives, shifting

from one bright vision to another, forever

in these momentary pastures.

Common and abundant though seemingly less so, this year.

For all who suffer from the momentary heat wave !

Thanks to all who provided me with feedback about the 'favs' problem. It seems this is a common glitch. I hope the folks at Flickr administration would address it.

I love this scene. Had my feet's momentary imprint on it only to be simultaneously erased by the wonderful cool water. Today the humidity in southwestern Ontario is disgustingly too high! I wish you a cool and serene day!

Frayed and anachronistic reality, with the old wooden door and the contents of the old carpentry behind the dusty glass. An image of this reality is suddenly lost when combined with the sudden and momentary dream of the day, with the image of dream and reflection: bicycle in the foreground, road and little white island houses in the background.

Momentary ....and Life

... as seen from Arches National Park. The La Sal Mountains are part of the Manti-La Sal National Park which is approximately 20 miles southeast of Arches (40 miles driving distance to La Sal). I've moved my geo-point to coincide with La Sal peak, rather than where I stood when I shot the photo.

For most of our time in Moab, the mountains were either behind clouds or in a haze. A momentary break in the clouds, a quick shot and this was the result.

It was a rainy day in the city today. The momentary faint rainbow against the dark sky was a delightful surprise. You may remember that in better weather we could see beautiful snowy mountains.

Shortly after taking this shot, the sky became totally dark and we were hit with a fierce thunder storm that caused local damage and flooding.

O... Dear Mind,

Your calm facade,

A mask that belies

The torrents beneath...

Oppressive turbulence

And distracting thoughts,

Though untold truth,

Should be stilled!

Conquer the distance

Between mind and heart,

Regain serenity,

An unenviable task.

Life is fleeting

Like a bursting bubble,

Here we are today,

Gone tomorrow...

Make life brighter,

Be it momentary,

Weather out the storm

In an island of tranquility!

Thank you for looking!

The surfers and ship seem to be illuminated with a momentary golden glow, as a storm rages out at sea. Or could that ship actually be The Beatles' Yellow Submarine?

Calm autumn morning at Moritzburg castle, Saxony, Germany. I waited a loooong time for that momentary sunbreak in the clouds to shine light on this and almost exceeded the time limit on the paid parking, this was taken on the first day after arrival in Germany from Greece the evening prior and it was a shock to have to pay for parking ....... EVERYWHERE!

Happy weekend to everyone.

Must go through a cable-release every 6 months. Sooner or later the cable jacket always slides out from the hub and they release prematurely. Like this one, clicked off after a momentary shutter actuation. Then came a wave that I had to lift the camera and tripod over. Replaced the camera, unscrewed the cable, recocked the shutter on ‘T’, and had another go. Sometimes get away with it, but not quite here…

It seems that weather has become more stable, but, in reality, it is only a momentary perception.

A convergence line, present throughout that lively afternoon, as in the previous photos, more or less at the same distance, is still visible for that chain of apparently harmless, irregular, cumulus clouds...which, a few hours later, will form a new Thunderstorms Squall Line, in the middle of the night, with high intensity phenomena over the whole area...

I have recently had the opportunity to visit Colorado and spend some time shooting snowscapes. This is a capture of the wall of ice that many climbers love to climb on. Some of the structures there are too fragile to ascend so are thankfully left untouched. I thought that shooting in the middle of winter would be fun but I realized after 4 days that I still enjoy living in Southern California. Some of the days the temperatures reached 8 degrees and no matter how many layers of clothes you wear you still have to pull your hands out of the gloves and even though those are only momentary exposures to the cold just a few moments out of your gloves requires many minutes back in to warm up. Unfortunately your hands are outside more than they are inside and thats where the problem lays.

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great week my friends!! :)

A momentary break in the clouds allows a sliver of sunlight to spotlight the side of Mount Andromeda, which stands beside the Athabasca Glacier.

We went out on Saturday morning and found a little used track in the mountains. By unusually good luck I found myself in the middle of a warbler fallout, almost all of the Yellow-rumped variety.

My attention (as may be expected) was focused on the tops of conifers where I would say 200+ warblers were cavorting from limb to limb with avian zest. In the midst of this event, this... this...... (might I say jealous resident) descended from on high and began to pose at close unobscured distances from my camera. I took this as a deliberate attempt by this vain fellow to purvey attention for himself (or for herself as the case may be......nuance).

Sunsets are one of the most beautiful parts of the day. It is the time when vibrant colors race across the sky, life settles in for the night, and an overall sense of calm comes. How can something so beautiful be so momentary? Don't you wish a moment like this could last forever, a moment where everything is quiet, and the beauty of nature is displayed! I long for the day when it will no longer be momentary, when there will be eternal peace, never ending beauty, constant and unrelenting love.

Virginia - A momentary bit of light, in the darkness...

I look at the sky, a thunderstorm is preparing. The clouds draw figures on a canvas that may appear the same, perhaps it is the same in my eyes but different. A kind of mask appears from heaven, perhaps to remind me of what I am experiencing or perhaps to tell me that it is only a momentary joke. The sky, our wonderful roof.

A momentary rainbow, deep within an old growth forest.

Sun rays peaking through a momentary gap in the clouds, casting beautiful light across the ocean.

Wishing all my dear Flickr friends a Happy Easter and hope you enjoy spending it with family and friends and in whatever way you celebrate.

A momentary stop off on the way to the airport. Rowbottom quagmire was swampy, black and gooey but it didn't stop a Latvian tog setting off in flipflops (without socks) from the road across to the river.
