This is a (heavy!) metal model car of a 1967 VW Karmann Ghia (width: 6 cm) ... love its classy curves ; ))

Happy Tuesday !
[Sorry, I have been absent here on Flickr most of the time last week - busy life. Will try to catch up in the coming days]

I actually own this car.
Of course it's only about 3" high, so I can't very well get inside and drive it about.
But thanks to the magic of macro photography, imaginative placement, and a 12 image focus stack (which takes a l-o-n-g time to process, even though the computer is doing most of the work) it almost looks as if my 1/24th model T&C is driving right up into my driveway through the rain puddle in the gutter.
It's potato delivery day at the old Georgetown General Store in South Australia's mid-north. The old farmer has gone in to rustle up some crates to load them in while another hopeful local is looking to do a deal and get them straight from truck to trunk!
This is one of those wonderful old country town general stores where you could buy almost anything, and still appears to be in business today.

Scale model potatoes courtesy of the breakfast cereal cupboard and a little cocoa powder for soil!
(If this looks familiar to my regular followers, that is because I have tried it a few times in the past, but keep trying to do better. The lighting on previous ones has left room for improvement.)

Mercedes Benz 300 SL roadster.
Both cars by Norev scale model cars.
Okay, this is what has happened. The cars needed parking somewhere. I got tired (along with the neighbours) of them blocking the street. So, the lounge had to go. Front wall and window gone. Half the dining room gone. In its place is a nice new Ferrari themed and heavily sponsored four car garage extension. So, now the cars have shelter - and that's the main thing! Right?
Forced perspective shot of two 1/18th scale model cars, special 1/18th scale model Ferrari parking garage, home made model driveway entrance, real houses and background cars - and the proud owner looking on happily!
I will shortly post a "making of" shot of this set-up. It took me two hours of setting up, aligning, practice shots, all to use just one of the forty or so photos I took.
Special thanks to my dearest who not only helped with this, but also allowed me to knock down the lounge wall! ; )

The first three Chevrolet Corvettes make a great line up. These spanned three decades from the very first white C1 in 1953, right through to the gold C3 model which ran for an amazing 15 years through to 1982. The gold one here would have been around 1969.

Sorry for a slight lack of fresh photos to post lately and slackness in commenting. Painful health issues are keeping me indoors and mostly in bed at the moment. Will catch up soon!
A couple of very different golden oldies parked by the pond in our village. One is the beautiful low slung and sporty 1955 Mercedes 190 SL convertible, and the other a very popular family car in its day here in Australia, the 1960 General Motors Holden FC Special sedan.

A forced perspective of the two 1/18th scale diecast models with the village pond as the real backdrop.
This will be my last post for a week or more as we are taking off up to the Riverland for another week of R and R. Taking this beautiful Mercedes of course, and possibly the wonderful black AC Cobra convertible - a couple of fine touring cars.
Will catch up with comments when we return!
A shot of the set up used for this forced perspective street scene. One garden table. Two tripods. Two fake roads. Eight cars. And, just out of sight - one ever so slightly annoying person who cannot make her mind up!
Seen cruising around our retirement village, this old and dirty Chevy Camaro from around 1970 turned out to be for sale! A bit dirty, a little rust and a tiny dent or two. Not bad for something 54 years old. A near perfect match in its condition for me! Where else could you get a Camaro for the bargain price of $110-00?

As always, this is another forced perspective shot of a slightly weathered and dirty 1/18th scale 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. Background is our other retirement village on a lovely sunny mid-winter day.
In summer, this would be a lovely cool and shady spot to camp alongside the mighty Murray River, under the huge old river red-gums looking across to Mannum and the wonderful old Murray Princess paddle-wheel cruise boat at the wharf. Even now, in winter, it is a lovely spot to rest a while!
This is not the tow car for the caravan!

A forced perspective shot of my dear Molly, the 1/18th scale diecast model 1955 Mercedes 190 SL taken from the campgrounds at Bolto which lies directly opposite Mannum on the Murray River in South Australia.
This will be my last shot for a week or so - we're heading off to the Grampians in Victoria for some more exploring. Might take a rugged 4 wheel drive, rather than a convertible this time! ; )
The Chevrolet Corvette has gone through many changes over the years. These two are some of my favourite shapes - the C2 on the left which was made from 1963 to 1967, then the C3 on the right which lasted from 1968 all the way through to 1982. It was the era of concealed headlights and even concealed windscreen wipers on the gold C3.

A focus stack of 12 images taken with the Canon R10 and processed in-camera. The two 1/18th scale models were displayed in my lounge room with a backdrop of an abstract landscape silk painting. Natural daylight from the right and a small cool white LED light panel giving a fill of light from the left front.
The models range from a very cheap Maisto (the blue C2) to a much better quality Norev model on the right.
I am working on the rest of the Corvettes to build a full set. It ain't a cheap hobby! ; )
Two fine convertible touring cars, parked in the Mannum Caravan Park and ready to go for a day trip on a fine sunny day in South Australia's Riverland.

A forced perspective shot of "Molly and Ziggy" my two 1/18th scale models that accompanied us on the recent tour of the Riverland around Mannum on the Murray River is SA. The real background to the models is the caravan park and our holiday cabin is just out of view to the right. It was just a perfect winter day for touring!
Not my new wheels this time. This vehicle belongs to my friend up in our sister retirement village here in Mount Gambier. Just the thing for a quick trip down to the shops!

A forced perspective shot of what I think is a 1/32 scale model 2019 Kenworth T909 prime mover. My friend was given this as a gift, and as he knew of my love for photographing model cars, we decided to try a few shots of this wonderful diecast model truck sitting in his driveway. The backdrop is his street in the village with the corner veranda post of his own home just visible on the left. The model truck is around 12 inches long.
I want one! ; )
This was the model that set me on my love of Ferrari - the 308 GTS. It was a beautiful piece of design by the famous Italian automobile designer, Pininfarina. This shape dates back to 1977, but this is the 1982 model. It is my latest die-cast 1/18th scale model by Norev.

A quick shot of my little forced perspective set-up that I use for the model car photography. Two tripods - one for the fake road and one for the camera. The camera itself is usually the Sony RX10 mark 4 which gives a good balance of large DOF and detail.
Ziggy and Molly parked by the Murray Princess at the Mary Ann reserve in Mannum, South Australia.
The reserve is newly refurbished after the devestating floods of 2023 with newly laid turf, and what seemed to be all new concrete kerbs and freshly laid bitumen here in the car park. For an idea of the flood level, the water got as high as the top of the posts on the rotunda on the right, so where I was standing, my head would have been several feet underwater.

The cars (Molly and Ziggy) are the 1955 Mercedes Benz 190 SL, and the 1961 AC Cobra. Both models by Norev.
Very grateful to the friendly locals here as the best place for my tripod mounted set up was right smack in the middle of the through lane in the car-park! Thankfully the traffic was light and the few motorists coming through were happy to slowly edge around me while I gestured all sorts of apologies and thanks! Even the lady and gent at the picnic table were reluctant to "spoil" my shot until I encouraged them to go ahead and sit there as it added some life to the shot.
A new edit of an old favourite.
On location forced perspective shot of two of my favourite 1/18th scale model cars parked by the Murray River in Mannum in South Australia's Riverland region.
Always nice to look out the front window and see a street full of Ferraris! This would be a very rich street in reality if these were fthe real cars. The front one on right of picture - the Ferrari F40 - was my previous record holder for the most valuable (real) car in my collection with them changing hands for up to around 4 million US dollars. The Ferrari 250 GTO is a little more valuable. There were only 36 ever built (all of which still survive) and one sold at a Sotheby's auction for around 50 million US dollars (80 million Australian dollars).
To put that figure in perspective, our individual units in the retirement village here generally keep pace with local (country) real estate prices. If all 250 unit owners here sold their units and gave me the money, I still could not afford this car! It boggles the mind!
A little more detail is here to see on the GTO. The blue is real leather on the seats and other interior surfaces. CMC models even go to the trouble of putting in the striker plates for the door opening mechanism along with full 4 point racing harnesses for the seats. The tyres don't just show the makers name (Dunlop Racing) but also feature all the other fine print normally found on the sidewalls. On the model, this print on the tyre is less than half a mm in height.

A forced perspective focus stack (25 images - processed in camera) taken in my retirement village street of my 1/18th scale model Ferrari F40 by Bburago and the Ferrari 250 GTO by CMC models. Taken with a Canon R10 and RF16mm lens.
When my cousin and I were just 8 years old, we used to walk the streets and always take a sneak peak inside any cars that were parked by the roadside. Back then, our main judge of whether or not a car was any good was to look at the speedometer and see what the top number was. In the day, many were around the 100 mph mark, so when we saw our first E-Type Jag and read that amazing 160 mph, we knew we were in the presence of a great car!
A 25 image focus stack of the dashboard of my AUTOart 1/18th scale model 1961 E-Type Jaguar roadster. A mix of ambient indoor artificial light and natural lighting from windows nearby.
Most model cars in my collection have blank rubber (sometimes just plastic) sidewalls on the tyres, but a few go to the trouble of putting the tyre manufacturer on there, just for extra detail. My CMC Ferrari 250 GTO goes that one step further and puts the other fine print on there too. Those two very thin lines of lettering near the bottom of the tyre read : Made in England - Fabriqué en Angleterre. For racing purposes only - Not for highway use.
The whole wheel and tyre measure about 39mm in diameter and that fine print is just 0.39 of a mm in height for each letter. Those stainless steel spokes are themselves just 0.15 of a mm thick or about twice the thickness of the average human hair!
You know what they say - small things amuse small minds! I am amused! ; )

Using another setting under the 'Art' mode on my camera. The colours have had a boost - the model car is actually more cream than yellow, but I liked the somewhat Retro look. The car is 6" front to back.
Two hobbies in one here - model car collecting together with open top motoring. This is a macro recreation of a picture in my "Mogstang" collection - "On a Sunday afternoon".

A final shot (for now) of the new red Porsche 964. This was to highlight a detail I did not even notice until I took some more shots today. The full size car had the Porsche name in big bold red letters carefully disguised and blended into the full width rear reflector, so I I was pleasantly surprised and amazed to see it included in this 1/18th scale model.

1957 Mercury Convertible Turnpike Cruiser
1:18 scale model
Harbor City, CA
10-10-24
24 image focus stack
This is my latest scale model car. It's a 1:18 scale model Mercury Turnpike Cruiser Convertible I got at an estate sale for $25.00. It was in it's original packaging and had never been opened. The gal who moved from our Mobile Park was a doll collector (and a bit of a hoarder, er, I mean pack rat) who had dozens of boxed Barbies and a lot of Disneyana collectibles. I purchased a lot of the Disney stuff, mainly Mickey Mouse. Of the model cars, this is the only one which caught my eye. Most of my collectible cars are 1:24 scale models from the Danbury Mint in the 90s. The Mercury is a "Road Signature" from Yat Ming.
I utilized the auto focus stack setting on my new Canon EOS R5 to take 24 consecutive images with different focus points at 55mm with the camera on a gorillapod sitting about a foot away from the model. Then I combined the images in Photoshop. Each RAW image is 43.6MB (8191 x 5463 pixels). Even with the auto settings, processing in Photoshop took about an hour, and slowed every program including the internet browser on my computer creating the completed image.
The model is sitting on the street in front of my house. I didn't do a great job of "scaling" the background to make the car look like it's full sized, but it's still a pretty good photo.
The title of my post is the title of a song recorded by bluesman K.C. Douglas and co written with Robert Geddins in 1948. (Actual title: Mercury Blues.) It was covered, among others, by country singer Alan Jackson in 1993.
I've posted a few model car shots in the past but this is the first time I've attempted a scale landscape. Of course it could be better but for a first crack I'm pretty happy... hope you like it.

When the newly acquired Ferrari 250 GTO is up on the hoist in the workshop, this is what Dougie has to deal with!
Among all this is fully operatioal front and rear suspension (leaf and coil springs) steering and even working universal joints. The fuel tanks and under tray are all stainless steel. The engine view from above is a treat apparently, but I still have not opened it up to have a look.
