Mr. Mockingbird was showing off his grasshopper catch to the lady birds for a good while. I spotted him grab it out of the air and then go up to a prominent branch and display it.
Pixie is always on hand to help with the gardening. Today it was a Kiwi plant that I pruned and the cats seem to love the freshly cut stems of this plant - almost like catnip .
This northern mockingbird was making a lunch out of the berries and chasing off the more photogenic western bluebirds!
Two weeks ago while visiting the Eastern Shore of Virginia, my daughter found this little female carolina mantis. It was cold outside and not many bugs around for her to eat. She seemed very hungry, so we put her in a soft net cage and caught some spiders and flies for her to eat. (This was no easy task, I assure you!) We decided to keep her, knowing she would die within a few days if left outside. We brought her home and continued feeding her, keeping her in the house. My daughter named her "Jade." She survived for two weeks and seemed very healthy. She died this past Sunday, but not before leaving us a gift: an eggcase! (technically called an ootheca) We will keep it cold until spring and then let it hatch in the yard...
Those willows looks tasty! This beaver eventually reached up and grabbed a branch of the willow tree at the big pond at Vanier Park.
