Formerly known as Oldsquaw, the Long-tailed Duck breeds in the Arctic and winters along both coasts of North America. It is one of the deepest diving ducks, and can dive as deep as 60 meters (200 feet) to forage.

They are all standing in the same direction getting ready to take flight. There were gulls flying around and as they got closer the shorebirds would take flight.

We are in Morris, Alabama. We were sitting outside when we noticed a large
flock of birds in a line. They stopped over head and went in circles for
about 20 minutes gaining a lot of altitude. Any idea what type of migrating
bird this is? It has become a pool side debate and no one will admit to
being wrong :-)...
Early one morning i went up to the top of the hill and shoot som pictures at the rising sun. All around my flocks of migrating birds went past on their way. Suddenly a small dot turned into a flock of these birds and i was lucky enough to get a photo of them and the rising sun together for a brief moment until they passed over my head.
