The fall migration of Monarch Butterflies came through in mid-September. I had just enough time to get a few shots before they were gone. Sadly, these were the only Monarchs I saw all summer.
Pelicans migrating over northern Nevada high desert, May 10, 2007.
I believe these pelicans, had lifted off of Lahonton Reservoir, earlier this morning, which is not that far away by air from I-80. Also there is the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge, with ample water also. I would say they traveled about 1 mile in the 10 minutes that I shot fotos, and just watched and enjoyed their freeness. Contrary to popular belief, there is water in the desert, and the water birds know just where. These birds barely flap a wing once they are airborne, as they ride the wonderful thermals rising off the desert playa.
To me it is a most inspiring "Spirit Dance" that I have had the joy of seeing now 2 years in a row. The grace and beauty of their flight, and swirling with the thermals is beyond my description.

Approximately 250 southward-bound Canadian Geese soar way above the countryside near Lake Park, Minnesota.
Summer is coming to a close when the geese begin their commute (more-or-less) southward. If this picture was animated, you would see the classic V formation forming as they jostled for position.
