Midsummer is especially important in the Scandinavian culture where it is the most celebrated holiday apart from Christmas.
In Denmark, the solstitial celebration is called Sankt Hans aften ("St. John's Eve").
It has been celebrated since the times of the Vikings by visiting healing water wells and making a large bonfire to ward away evil spirits. Today the water well tradition is gone. Bonfires on the beach, speeches, picnics and songs are traditional.
In the 1920s a tradition of putting a witch made of straw and cloth on the bonfire emerged as a remembrance of the church's witch burnings from 1540 to 1693. This burning sends the "witch" away to Bloksbjerg, the Brocken mountain in the Harz region of Germany where the great witch gathering was thought to be held on this day.
Hello everyone! It's been to long since I uploaded something...and I've missed visiting your streams. Hope to get more time to spend on Flickr during the coming weeks.
This weekend we are celebrating Midsummer here in Sweden. After Christmas this is probably the most celebrated holiday. This year we had such a great weather. Happy Midsummer everyone!

"Midsummer Eve Bonfire", Nikolai Astrup, 1915
at The Clark Institute Museum, Williamstown, MA
www.clarkart.edu/exhibition/detail/nikolai-astrup
The Clark presents the first North American exhibition of the paintings and prints of Norwegian painter Nikolai Astrup (1880–1928), who deftly wove tradition and innovation into his artistic production. Astrup is considered one of Norway’s most important artists, yet he is largely unknown outside of his homeland. Nikolai Astrup: Visions of Norway features more than eighty-five works celebrating this brilliant painter, printmaker, and horticulturalist.
Astrup’s oeuvre is notable for its intense, colorful palette, and the magical realism of his remarkable landscapes.
暑さのため酸素とブドウ糖が不足した私の脳細胞はこのベンチをアルルのゴッホの部屋の黄色い椅子にすり替えてしまいました。
Due to the heat, my oxygen and glucose deficient brain cells replaced this bench with a yellow chair in Van Gogh's room in Arles.
Love the premium high sunlight this time of year.
Holiday cottage heaven.

“The Indians marked the midsummer as the season when berries were ripe. We are a little saddened, because we begin to see the interval between our hopes and their fulfillment. The prospect of the heavens is taken away, and we are presented with a few small berries.”
- - Thoreau's Journal
The midsummer bonfire (Sankt Hans-bålet) on Skagen South Beach. Never have I seen so big a bonfire, and the strong wind pressing the flames towards the sea - whauw, it was all very dramatic.
In Denmark, we tie a witch (no, she is just made from hay and cloth!!!) on top of the bonfire and send her off to Blocksberg along with all the evil spirits around us - and this one took off long before her stake was burnt. Now, it looks very crosslike and a bit evil in this picture - but in reality it is a peaceful celebration and very pagan indeed.... no religious intentions whatsoever, but I think it makes a hefty picture.
It was my first experience with Holga and live fire - and Holga did extremely well!
A 400 ISO-film against fire and a darkening sky - and, Voila, instant drama!
