Crime ou tradição?

In Brazil it is tradition to let these type of balloons fly, mostly in the month of June, in order to celebrate Midsummer Day (St John's Day). The tradition brought to Brazil during colonial times has become a very important popular event. As this nationwide festival, called "Festa Junina" (June Festival), happens during the European midsummer, it takes place in the Brazilian midwinter and is most associated with Northeastern Brazil, but is today celebrated in the whole country. However, letting these balloons fly has become a sort of macabre sport. It is forbidden by law due to the devastating fires the balloons cause. The balloons are followed by their owners and a lot of other people interested in getting them first. So during the flight of the balloon a crazy balloon chase takes place, that most of the times ends in terrible fights, and sometimes in bloodsheding.

The owner of this balloon, that fortunately landed in the water right next to my home, was carrying a gun. When the balloon landed I could hear the men shouting and fighting terribly.

This photo tells pretty much what the Finnish midsummer is all about: The bonfires are burning while drunken people are drowning in the beautiful lakes of Finland. That's sad and people never learn...

I saw this incident while watching the bonfire at Tuunaansaari. Those drunken pirates somehow flipped their boat over while watching the fire and I got this shot. -Thanks dudes! ;)

Glad Midsommar is what it says on the plates to this Ford Eifel. One of the Midsummer traditions at Prästgårdsparken in Sorunda is to take your "veteranbil" to the park, and quite a few people did. So before the raising of the Midsummer Pole I walked over to the area where those cars were paraded for a few snaps.

"The face of The Midsummer Chronophage is a 24 carat gold-plated steel disc almost 1.5M in diameter, polished to resemble a pond of liquid metal with ripples that allude to the Big Bang. It was created by a series of underwater explosions."
