On Saturday 23rd June 2012 it was Chesters yearly "Midsummer Watch Parade".
Chester's Midsummer Watch is one of Britain's oldest festivals - a tradition reflecting 500 years of the city's history. An old tradition around Baltic Sea countries, like Finland, is to burn bonfires on the Midsummer's eve at the end of June. The original purpose of these bonfires was to scare away demons but nowadays it serves as a gathering of friends and family.

Whoever comes to the Istituto Linguistico Mediterraneo, arrives bringing with them their own color and their own way of living life and when they return home they bring with them a bit 'of color from all the people they have met. We are not from Italy, or Spain, or Japan, neither from Israel, or America, or Europe, neither from Africa, or Brazil or Uruguay... We are a family ... Yesterday we mixed all our colors in a party the craziest ever seen. Balloons, fancy dresses, colorful cocktails, soap bubbles and of course many colors... your colours... our colors...

Noi non siamo italiani, né spagnoli, né giapponesi, né israeliani, né americani, né europei, né africani, né brasiliani, né uruguagi... Noi siamo una famiglia... Ieri abbiamo mescolato tutti i nostri colori in una festa che così pazzesca non si era mai vista. It was well past 8 and the sun cast long, golden shadows through Cannaregio. While wandering through one of the remote canals, I noticed a small wooden doorway ajar under one of the buildings….it was more of a ship’s hatch, with an intriguing collection of flotsam hanging on the inside of the door. As I approached, I was able to see that the door opened to a narrow workshop, nestled between the street and open to the canal on the opposite side. Inside this dark workshop was an Italian gentleman tying fly-fishing lures – feathers, fishing gear, and bottles of wine surrounded him. It was one of the most amazing rooms I’ve ever seen. A remote curiosity shop out of a summer’s dream. I said, “Buona Sera,” and was invited in. He said his name was Andrea and this was where he gets away, “my phone won’t work here so my wife can’t call.” He poured me a glass of cool white wine and showed me the beautiful golden pheasant he was using for fly feathers. Just then, a lovely blond woman ducked into the workshop. It was Monica, his wife. The three of us sat there a while talking about Venice, photography and their lives. It was surreal and beautiful evening in Venice.

This is the unique Midsummer Pole in Sorunda. It is very different from any midsummer pole I have ever seen. On my visit the woman in the background, Maria Landin was giving a speech about that subject, unfortunately I missed much of what she said as I arrived half way through her speech and I then walked around taking photos. On the other hand I did talk to her later and I took her photo for the 100 Strangers Project, so I can always get in touch with her and get that info.
