Very vocal middle spotted woodpecker (Leiopicus medius) perched on a tree trunk.
Bardzo głośny dzięcioł średni (Leiopicus medius) siedzący na pniu drzewa.
These are from a recent hike up the Horsetail Falls Trail #438/Oneonta Trail #424 in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon.
A lot of people do not know this, but the Chesapeake Bay here in Maryland is a hot spot for vampires ... hence the urgency by this boat to get in before the sun sets ;))

Reset my settings here to capture the fireworks that some folks were setting off along the river as the Christmas Parade of boats headed down Middle River. Liked the result as well with the 2 seconds on the boat movement with all the lights.
Slowed the shutter down to 1/125 second and panned along hand held as this couple came back up the river near sunset.
Happy Window Wednesday as well :)
Three pictures from a walk in the woods. Middle spotted woodpecker, Starling and Treecreeper. Not quite as successful as they are partly obscured by branches or far up in the tree.
The middle spotted woodpecker is similar to our great spotted woodpecker but somewhat smaller and less often seen.
Mittelspecht

Here is another capture of the cool Riverboat that came down past Wilson Point yesterday evening ... quite unexpected!
Very large and looked great there in the evening light.
Happy Fence Friday!
As I was finishing up yard work yesterday afternoon, it then rained as a cold front passed. It cleared some afterwards and figured the sky was clear for the remainder of the evening. But then double checked the radar and saw that out in western Maryland there was a second band of rain with the front, slowly breaking up. Kept my eye on this thinking there was a chance it would be passing the Baltimore area come sunset time. As we ate dinner that evening around 7 I noticed the thick clouds rolling past ... and light off to the west behind. So I made a quick trek down to visit with my dad by the river ... and about 7:45 headed outside as the sun and clouds were working some magic again.
Moved in close to the pier here from the beach along the river and used the pier piling there to block some of the brightest area of the sky to help even out the exposure some.
About 15 minutes before sunset, the light coming in through the clouds and onto the river with the rays was really nice. Captured with the 9 Stop ND.
Only threee roads are running parallel through Nathon, Koh Samui Thailand, This is the quiet Middle Road at mid day! There are beautiful traditional buildings, some. are still wooden Thai houses with small businesses and shops, which we can see in the back.

This evening the clouds started to clear to the west as tropical Debbie pulled through Maryland and headed into New England. The strong winds pulled water up the Chesapeake Bay creating higher tides than usual.
Luckily the storm surge did not equal Isabel years ago that flooded into homes along Middle River.
Also, if anyone notices, this capture was taken at 16mm. Trying out a new lens and focal lengths that I have not taken before along Middle River. With these captures taken this evening, I will get to see the results with the 16/35 GM lens.
In the past 24/70mm and 14mm have been the lenses used for my landscapes. So to have the range of 16mm to 24mm with the new lens should lend itself to some new views / perspectives.
The light and clouds along the river was quite pretty this evening. After a long week at work, it was also great to get out and get behind the 'new lens'.

The middle spotted woodpecker (Dendrocoptes medius) is a European woodpecker belonging to the genus Dendrocoptes.
The middle spotted woodpecker is 20–22 cm long and has plumage similar to the great spotted woodpecker. As with that species the upperparts are predominantly black with white oval wing patches and white barring on the wings, and the underparts are white. The main differences are a red crown, lack of a black moustachial stripe, a pink vent, and dark streaks on the flanks.
Although only slightly smaller than the great spotted woodpecker, it appears smaller due to its short, slender bill and more rounded, pale head. It can also be confused with the Syrian woodpecker (particularly juveniles), being distinguished from this by the smaller bill, and the red crown not having narrow black sides.
The middle spotted woodpecker occurs only in Europe and southwest Asia, from northern Spain and France east to Poland and Ukraine, and south to central Italy (where local), the Balkan Peninsula, Lithuania, Latvia, Turkey, the Caucasus, and Iran.
