Okay here's my little story about this microcosm of photos from the Williamsville water mill.

First thing you all should know about me, is that I am the most impractical person when it comes to shoes... or clothes for that matter. I am almost never properly attired for the weather, and I truly believe that shoes are for fashion rather than function.

So, for this little excursion to Glen Park, I of course was wearing my 'cute' shoes. Yes, I admit... not at all suited for hiking about in mud, pond corners and snow/ice covered steep inclines.

All was fine, until I saw this long feather-like leaf straddling the waters edge.

The rocks seemed stable enough, I didn't count on the slick surface against my smooth soles though.

It wasn't too bad, a shoe full of mud and water in exchange for these macros. I think it was totally worth it.

Besides, now I get to go shoe shopping (again)....

Another cellphone picture from my last weekend in NYC.

Every time I am back in this city, I am always struck by how intensely inspiring this microcosm is. There is for sure something special about its architecture, that surrounds you like a cocoon but also let you reconnect with perspective, creating an amazing sense of space by leading your eyes to the horizon and to the sky all the time.

Inside the tree, hidden from the outside, is a beautiful microcosm of colour and life. You can't see it in this photo because they're so small and fast-moving, but the tree had dozens of Hummingbirds flitting back and forth within it. I've never seen so many Hummingbirds in one natural place before.

‪#‎parcobeigua‬

After a stroll down on the beach I noticed the wonderful rock formations at the foot of the cliffs. Certain areas had great colour combinations and all sorts of lichens and growths. This section was particularly full of life.

A pesar de las industrias, de la intervención del hombre, de la contaminación, algunas especies resisten y continuan el ciclo de la vida: la mariposa come de la flor y a la vez contribuye al ciclo reproductivo de ésta.

Honestly I think the word 'microcosm' must have been coined by someone looking into a chunk of ice. This was the morning after the intense sunset that colored the previous shots, and I wanted to go back and see what I could find in the structure of the ice itself.

Within the microcosm of a mossy tree stump, a tiny hidden predator lies patiently in wait. Still a juvenile, this praying mantis (Haania sp.) will eventually mature and shed most of its moss-like camouflage in favor of fully developed wings. Sarawak, Malaysia (Borneo).

Nădrag’s industrial history is a microcosm of Romania’s broader industrial trajectory—from the promise of modern industry in the 19th century, through the aggressive industrialization of the communist era, to the stark decline following the 1989 revolution. The Ciocanul factory, once a symbol of economic vitality, now stands as a relic of a bygone era, overtaken by nature and time, as seen in the photo. While the factory’s abandonment reflects the challenges of post-communist transition, it also raises questions about the potential for revitalization—whether through cultural projects, tourism (like urban exploration), or environmental cleanup initiatives.

The curators explain: "Hundreds of photosensitive light sensors and tiny speakers, arranged in a multi-layered circle, accumulate data from sunlight and gallery interactions. Each sensor replays the data to the next sensor forming a one-day memory. As each sensor relays fundamental tones, the difference between now and the past is transferred into a low resonant hum, weaving time into a flickering sonic tapestry. This breathing architecture of photos and vibrations immerses visitors in the shared nexus of environmental changes, their own presence, and technological memory."

This is a Hellebore flower. They are one of the few flowers I have found to truly be deer resistant. I used reverse negative processing on the image to give it an other worldly feel for the Microcosm theme.

I made a trip to Kyoto again and enjoyed the Gion Festival which has been continuing since the 9th century. Everything is passing quickly here in Tokyo, so I often visit in Kyoto and feel a sense of immutability.

The forest floor is a living microcosm, when one element ceases to live, it creates a home or food source for something else. Tree trunks in particular bring new life to the forest floor when they die and fall. As was the case with this moss covered tree trunk near Mingo Falls just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

I had never shot Mingo Falls, so we stopped there on our way in. When we arrived, the light was bad, the glare was bad, the kids crawling all over the falls were bad, the smokers hanging around the falls were bad...so I turned my focus to the smaller scenes, those that I tend to overlook too often. As a landscape photographer, I am often too focused on the big picture, with a wide angle lens, and I forget to look for these small worlds within the bigger picture.

Armed with a 45mm Tilt Shift lens, I was shooting small scenes away from the main attraction when I found this little fern, growing out of the side of a mossy downed tree trunk. I really wanted a longer exposure on the water to minimize the textures, but the breeze meant that over a 1 or 2 second exposure, the fern was moving...so...I made two images, one for the water at a smaller aperture, and then blended it into the image of just the fern, shot at maximum aperture of f/2.8 to really put the focus on the fern. Some creativity was needed to blend the two, but I am quite happy with how it turned out!

"Man is a microcosm, or a little world, because he is an extract from all the stars and planets of the whole firmament, from the earth and the elements; and so he is their quintessence."

I need a vacation. Le Jardin botanique d'Èze, perched atop tiny Èze Village in Southeastern France would be nice right about now.

Taken from the Côte d'Azur vacation archives, summer 2010.

The garden was created after World War II on a chateau's ruins by town mayor André Gianton and Jean Gastaud of the Jardin Exotique de Monaco. It is sited on steep terrain falling over 400 meters (1,300 feet) to the sea with panoramic views of the coast, and known for its impressive collection of cactus and succulents from the Mediterranean region, Africa, and the Americas.
