This broche was worn by Ethyl Merman on Broadway during her run in Annie Get Your Gun. My mother was responsible for the props and costumes for a Dinner Theatre in Westchester County in NY (just north of NYC). The first show was Annie Get Your Gun. While my mother was setting up the costume shop for the theatre, hunting down costumes and props for the show, she stumbled on a bunch of costumes from the original Broadway production and on one of the costumes was this broche.

Chelsea is now the proud owner of this.

Coney Island USA's 26th Annual Mermaid Parade, 21 June 2008

August 1970 program for "Hello, Dolly!" starring Ethel Merman at the St James Theatre in the Broadway Theatre District in New York City. Ethel could shake the rafters of the largest theatre without a microphone.

Not sure if I saw this performance, but definitely saw her in Mineola.

Around 2002 saw "The Producers" at the St James Theater. The show had been completely sold out for over a year -- I paid full box office price and got a good seat in the front row of the balcony. The stage show was a hyped up version of the original movie and lived up to the theme "nothing exceeds like excess" - the "Springtime for Hitler" sequence was a parody of a satire of an insanely over the top extravanganza. The movie of the stage show (second movie version) was toned own and cleaned up by comparison.

The parish church Saint-Martin was built mid 19th century, to replace a romanesque building, that was "beyond repair"- The portal, being the most valuable part of the old church was saved and got "reused". It carved late 12th century is for sure one of the finest examples of romanesque art in the Lorraine.

It is surprising, to find such an elaborate work of art in such a small village. The story behind is, that after merovingian king Clovis death (561), who had united the Frankish tribes, the kingdom got partioned between his sons, who then started a cruel family-war, to unite it again.

So in 577 at a place named "PONT de PIERRE" (= "Pompierre" = "stone bridge") three kings met to talk. Childebert (king of Austrasia), Chilperic I (king of Neustria) and Gontran (king of Burgundy). This meeting took place here in 577 - and to commemorate it a chapel was built, that during the 12th century (about 600 years after the meeting!) got replaced by a larger church. The portal seen here goes back to exactly that church.

The bases on the sides of the portal have a totally different style compared to the artistic tympanum. The carvings are rather rough (and unfortunately as well very weathered), while the base on the left side may depict a giant lizard (salamander?), the right side has this mermaid. Or merman.

Once the Lord of the Sea, Mer-Man found himself chafing against Skeletor's authority.

This merman consist of the dried top half of a monkey attached to a fish tail. It was said to have been caught in Japan in the 18th century and was later presented to the British Museum.
