The Lillian Goldman Fountain of Life, outside the LuEsther T. Mertz Library Building at the New York Botanical Garden, was designed by sculptor Charles E. Tefft in 1905. The Beaux Arts sculpture presents imaginative bronze allegorical figures on a white marble foundation, centered within a white marble basin. The three sculptural groups depict a joyful sea nymph and a pair of heroic seahorses pulling a seashell chariot through the crest of a wave while a startled mermaid and merman hurry out of the way.
The New York Botanical Garden, spanning some 250 acres of Bronx Park, was founded in 1891 on part of the grounds of the Belmont Estate, formerly owned by the tobacco magnate Pierre Lorillard, after a fund-raising campaign led by Columbia University botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton, who was inspired to emulate the Royal Botanic Gardens in London. It contains 48 different gardens and plant collections.
"Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul" is not mentioned in any written document before the 13th century. Most historians agree, that the church was built not earlier than in the first half of the 12th century. About a century later, the Romanesque transept and choir got demolished - and replaced by the large Gothic structure, seen here. The tower was erected within the 13th century.
The church was added to the list of "monuments historique" already in 1862, but the restoration process started end of the 19th century.
The church was added to the list of "monuments historique" already in 1862, but the restoration process started end of the 19th century. Of course a church like this needs perpetual care.
The state of the portal is the result of a very soft stone, used by the carvers in the 12th century and a very long neglect.
Most of the details, especially on the right side, are weathered away. There may be a bearded merman here, but it is nearly gone.
The church Saint-Nicolas in the little village of Nonette was once part of a benedictian priory depending from the important abbey in la Chaise-Dieu.
The construction of the single nave church started within the 12th century in a sober romanesque style. It took centuries to built it, so the gothic choir on the east of the structure was completed with the 15th century.
Inside the nave. Near the western entrance are some very interesting works of romanesque art, covered under a thick coat of white paint. One of them is this.
A "mer-family" is placed on top the head of a cow (or calf). The head of the bovine is very "realistic", the horns are cut - and the tongue seems to lick some salt from the wall below. There is something wrong with the right eye of the bearded merman. The eye is neither swollen, nor is he squinting - it is just a small cobweb.

Mary and Daniel MacMillan House, 1222 Cass Street, La Crosse, Wisconsin. This two-story brick and stucco Prairie School house dates from 1914 and was designed by architects Percy Bentley and Otto Merman. After 1900, and despite the crash of the lumber industry, wealthy residents continued to seek out this neighborhood. But Queen Anne mansions gave way to modern residences such as this one. Prominent local architects led the way, with Percy Dwight Bentley and Otto Merman introducing the long horizontal lines of the Prairie style. In 1914 Merman, working as Bentley’s draftsman, designed this house. Its core is organized in horizontal bands: a brick strip forming the lower walls, then a ribbon of rectangular windows, then a strip of wood-trimmed stucco composing the upper walls, then another ribbon of windows under a wide-overhanging, hipped roof. Like many of Merman’s designs, this one shows pronounced asymmetry: a one-story solarium juts from the rear of one side elevation, while a large two-story wing with a porte-cochère projects from the other side. MacMillan, a personal friend of Merman’s, ran an automobile-gauge company, one of the factories that helped sustain La Crosse’s prosperity after lumbering’s demise. This house is on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Cass and King Street Residential Historic District .

Medieval misericord on the north side of the choir stalls at Holy Trinity, Stratford upon Avon.
One of the most visited parish churches in the country, Holy Trinity at Stratford upon Avon needs little introduction, famous the World over as the last resting place of a certain celebrated local playwright! It is a worthy building regardless of the Shakespeare connection, and one of the grandest churches in Warwickshire. The central tower and spire are very much a local landmark.
Most of the cruciform building we see today dates from the 15th century and very much a display of Perpendicular Gothic, especially the impressive nave and chancel (flooded with light from huge windows, despite their full complement of Victorian glass) with their original carved and panelled ceilings.
There are fine monuments in the Clopton Chapel at the end of the north aisle, and many more in the chancel (including Shakespeare's, hence the entry fee to this part of the church) whilst the choir stalls retain a superb set of medieval misericords with entertaining carvings. The glass in the church is mostly Victorian, though some medieval fragments remain in some places.
Holy Trinity is a very well known church that will reward a visit for more than its Shakespeare connection, and is normally open to visitors every day.
