The Mermaid is one of the sand sculptures created for the 24 h speed carving contest. I still don't know which of the sculptures has won the contest but I hope to go there again next weekend and find out.

People are drawn by the delightful Georgian and half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, pretty harbour and quirky shops. Mermaid Street is storybook lovely, with cobbles running steeply downhill and historic houses either side.
Sunrise at Mermaids Cove Beach.
This is a private beach of Sandaway Beach Holiday Park in Combe Martin, which is a village, civil parish and former manor on the North Devon coast about 4 miles east of Ilfracombe. It is a small seaside resort with a sheltered cove on the north-west edge of the Exmoor National Park.
What if a mermaid would work as a lifeguard? :D I think she could just ask some of her sea neighbors to not bother humans in the shallow water around the beach. :)

This picture literally started with that question. I just thought it would be a fun idea to put lifeguard's post in a water, but the main intention was to show that keeping sharks away could be very easy.
The mermaid is not Ariel, though, just a mermaid. :) I don't have Ariel and she looks like a cartoon character, I prefer more realistic minifigures. And my idea wasn't even about Ariel (though it would work as well, considering that she has experience in saving drowning princes), I just wanted to use that gorgeous hair piece, so they look a bit alike (but their tails are in different color). :D

Part of a local legend, in New Brighton, on the opposite bank of the Mersey to Liverpool.
There is a trail around the town of New Brighton, where five of the mermaid sculptures can be found. This one is on the promenade, and is the Mermaid of Memories.

Almost everyone is familiar with Gold Hill in Shaftesbury – for the Hovis television ad if nothing else – but how about this? Mermaid Street in Rye, East Sussex. It has been in existence since at least the 10th century, and is a visual delight to rival any historical counterpart in England.
My photograph shows Mermaid Street at its mellow best at 9 o'clock on a summer evening. On the right is the Mermaid Inn – “unquestionably the most beautiful of all smugglers’ inns and undoubtedly one of the loveliest of all the inns in England”, declared the historian and writer Leonard Thompson in the 1940s.
Arrecife de las Sirenas, or Mermaids Reef at the Cape of Cabo De Gata, Spain. This reef is really a series of Volcanic Chimneys and forms the southern point of the Cabo De Gata National Park. It gets its name from the ancient days of sailors spotting monk seals on these rocks and confusing them with mermaids.
I had been here before two years ago and saw that it was a spectacular spot for a sunset. It is about an hour away from where I am staying, so I set off hoping to get some decent images. I arrived early and scouted around the cliffs for a good vantage point. I had the place to myself, it was deserted as sunset approached. I had just fitted my NISI Filter holder and noticed 2 camera men, a video photographer, lighting aide, bride and groom, best man and bridesmaids arrive on top of the cliffs. Great, they were no problems with that. The light wasn't particularly good at first but as the sun set the sky started to get really interesting and at that moment the wedding photo shoot moved down to the base of the cliffs, right in my line of view. So I had to scramble over the cliffs in the dusky light to find alternative shots.
They actually did me a favour in the end, as the sky got red I got several alternative shots of the lighthouse and rocks that I would have missed had I stayed at my original location. I had actually taken this shot of the slipway some years ago in daylight, but having this opportunity to get it at sunset, was a bonus and down to the visiting wedding party forcing me to move around more!
