The Merchandise Building close to the intersection of Church and Dundas Streets. Constructed between 1910 and 1914, the Merchandise building is an outstanding example of the industrial architecture of the Chicago School. Burke, Horwood and White, the architects, also designed the Hudson's Bay Building at Yonge and Queen and the Bell Media building on Queen Street. In its previous incarnations it was first a Simpsons and then a Sears warehouse. It remains one of the largest buildings in downtown Toronto by floor space (over 93,000 square metres) — the structure is built like a bunker. In the late 1990's it underwent a conversion to residential lofts (the largest loft complex in North America at the time). Interiors were designed by Simone-Ciccone and Brian Gluckstein (if I recall correctly Yabu Pushelberg were also involved). The City of Toronto has designated the site a historic property.
The Merchandise Building is now my home base in the city — it's a good fit.
