While you are learning hiragana, try to expose yourself to the cards as much as possible. You can even play "Tower of Cards" (2 decks needed) where you race a partner to see who can stack the highest within a certain amount of time.

Lucas Films asked me to create a batch of illustrations for the Indiana Jones franchise, I was given a open brief, as long as it was some how connected to the 4 movies I could pretty much do anything I liked.
The illustrations were used various bits of merchandise from books to collectable playing cards.

The world's largest commercial building, along the river in downtown Chicago. So big, I couldn't get the entire thing in one frame with a fisheye lens.

Rules
Carry a pack of Moekana around with you to play anywhere - like when you are waiting for food for example! Anyway the rules are...
Words that only have 1 hiragana are not allowed.
Only plain verbs allowed.
People's names are not allowed.
A match ends when a player has used up all their cards to make words or when 3 minutes are up. The person with the least amount of cards in their hands wins.
Dakuten and handakuten cannot be used because the default pack does not include any.
"つ", "よ" and "ゆ" cannot be used as their small counterparts so you are not allowed to make a word like "やって" or "ちょう".
These are the official tournament rules but you can modify them to your liking (outside of the tournaments) - just as long as you have fun learning!
The more words you learn, the more tournaments you will win.

As you can see from the layout of each card - you need to know hiragana to learn Kanji. You are not going to be able to learn Kanji effectively if you do not understand hiragana. Hiragana however is easy to learn especially with Moekana.

from the holga transparencies, this is the Merchandise Mart, built in 1926 by Marshall Field and Company it is the largest building in the world (next to the pentegon) with 4 million square feet, and over 4,000 windows...it is so big that it even has its own zip code--60654...it is used as a wholesale mart with recent additions of retail shops and more...its a pretty cool building, you should check it out!
This fortress-like structure is the Chicago Merchandise Mart. It was built as a Marshall Fields wholesale center in 1930. At the time of its completion, it was the largest building in the world, at 4 million square feet. It was sold in 1945 to Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., the father of John, Robert, and Ted Kennedy, and it continued to be owned by the Kennedy family until 1998.
The most interesting bit of trivia I know about this building is that it has a rather unusual form of air-conditioning that is powered by ice: "a 1980s ice-storage cooling system installed by its previous owners, the Kennedy family, who bought the building in 1945 and sold it to Vornado Realty Trust in 1998. The system freezes tons of water overnight, even in winter months when the Mart's cooling needs are minimal. The ice is then brought up to 34 degrees and pumped into the air conditioning system during the day. The setup shifts power consumption to lower-price, off-peak periods."
