Volunteers of the Indonesian Red Cross distribute food, water and plastic mats to tens of thousands of people fleeing Mount Merapi. Friday's violent eruptions have been described as the largest in a hundred years by local vulcanologist. The volcano continues to emit huge amounts of hot ash and gas, thousands of meters into the sky.

Mount Merapi's worst eruption in a century - 5 November 2010
MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia (AP) -- Searing gas avalanched down an Indonesian volcano with a thunderous roar, torching houses and trees and incinerating villagers as they fled Mount Merapi's worst eruption in a century. Scores of bodies found Friday raised the death toll to 122. The injured - with clothes, blankets and even mattresses fused to their skin by the 1,400 degree Fahrenheit (750 degree Celsius) heat - were carried away on stretchers following the first big explosion just before midnight.
Friday's explosion - said by volcanologists to be the biggest since the 1870s - hit hardest in Bronggang, a village nine miles (15 kilometers) from the crater. Soldiers joined the rescue operations, pulling at least 78 bodies from homes and streets blanketed by ash up to one foot (30 centimeters) deep

Thousands of people are trying to reach Yogyakarta's Maguwoharjo stadium following the most violent eruptions since Mount Merapi erupted on 26 October 2010.
The stadium has been set up as a central reception center as many IDP camps on the slopes of the mountain had to be evacuated over-night.

The violent eruptions of late October 2010, levelled forests, crops and villages on the slopes of Mount Merapi and covered the area with a thick layer of ash.
Panoramic view of our observation spot for a few hours near Merapi's summit. The erupting summit cone is to the left and extinct and slightly taller Gunung Merbabu is at the right. The view between the two is largely obscured by Merapi's ash.
