Mount Merapi's worst eruption in a century

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia (AP) -- Searing gas avalanched down an Indonesian volcano with a thunderous roar, torching houses and trees and incinerating villagers as they fled Mount Merapi's worst eruption in a century. Scores of bodies found Friday raised the death toll to 122. The injured - with clothes, blankets and even mattresses fused to their skin by the 1,400 degree Fahrenheit (750 degree Celsius) heat - were carried away on stretchers following the first big explosion just before midnight.

Friday's explosion - said by volcanologists to be the biggest since the 1870s - hit hardest in Bronggang, a village nine miles (15 kilometers) from the crater. Soldiers joined the rescue operations, pulling at least 78 bodies from homes and streets blanketed by ash up to one foot (30 centimeters) deep

Many of the elderly lost all their lives work, their homes, their possessions and, in many cases, relatives who were killed by the explosive eruptions.

The city of Yogyakarta, home to some three million residents, is now covered by a thin layer of ash. Torrential rains are now mixing with ash and debris and rushing down the slopes clogging rivers. Two villages have already experienced flooding as rivers swollen with black sticky mud burst their banks.

Nick, Colin, my dad and I did a night hike up Gunung Merapi, the highly active volcano on the north side of Yogya. My dad made it up halfway, a very commendable feat, and Nick, Colin and I made it all the way up to the top. Here are some photos of the three of us at the summit as the sun rose.

Just three days ago, this was a reception center for some 3,000 people on the slopes of Mount Merapi. Now the tents stand deserted and equipment litters the site, indication that the center hastily abandoned during the latest eruptions.

In many town and villages below the volcano, streets are lined which large mounds of volcanic ash and debris.

The city of Yogyakarta is being blanketed in a blanket of white ash from the latest eruptions on Mount Merapi. More than 80 people are reported to have been killed overnight by violent eruptions which sent pyroclastic clouds cascading down the mountain, forcing thousands to flee.

Look and find 4 'little' truck..! Lihat, truck itu kelihatan kecil sekali jika di banding dengan tebing kali Gendol. Foto ini menunjukkan tepat ujung lidah material vulkanik yang mengubur Kali Adem. Ujung pasir itu sudah mulai dikeruk.

Seasonal rains have cut deep ravines in the exposed slopes of the mountain, washing thousands of tons of sand, mud and ash into the rivers causing them to flood in towns and villages around the volcano.

Clearing the debris from the recent floods will be a huge task but some also see it as an economic opportunity and are selling the sand to the local construction industry

Judul Buku: Lirik Lereng Merapi; Antologi Puisi dan Geguritan

Pengantar: Dewan Kesenian Sleman dan Suminto A. Sayuti

Penerbit: Dewan Kesenian Sleman bekerja sama dengan Yayasan Aksara Indonesia

Tahun: 2001

Tebal: 174 hlm.

ISBN: 979-95817-18-9

Buku ini berisi puisi-puisi karya Abidah El Khalieqy, Agung Suryahadi, Agus Manaji, Akhmad Muhaimin Azzet, Aprinus Salam, Arief Fauzi Marzuki, Arwan Tuti Artha, Bambang Widiatmoko, Hamdy Salad, Ignatius Sawabi, Ismet NM Haris, Kuswaidi Syafi’ie, Linus Suryadi AG, L. Bambang Suryanto, Salman Yoga, Santosa Warna Atmaja, Sri Wintala Achmad, Sunardian Wirodono, Tini Sastra Saleh, Ulfatin Ch, Umilia Rokhani, dan Yeni Siregar.

Berisi juga geguritan karya Christy WN, Effy Widianing, Greg Susanto, Krishna Mihardja, Maharani Widayarti, Marcellus Nur Basah, Muhammad Yamin, Sardiyono, Sartono Kusumaningrat, Sena B. Sulistya, Sri Suprapti, Suharyanto BP, Sulistyanto, Suparno Eko Saputro, Tri Wahyono, VM Murwaningsih, dan Wakidi.

The government is building several hundred transitional shelters in various locations around the mountain for those who cannot return to their villages. ECHO is providing funding for the construction of some of the water and sanitation facilities.
