Mount Merapi, after erruption

View of Merbabu volcano from the top of the Merapi.

It took approximatively 5 hours, by night, to climb on the top (the last part with volcanic rocks was quite difficult), 4 hours to go down.

The Merapi erupted in 2006 and 2010. The last eruption in 2010 was truly devastating, causing the displacement of more than 320 000 people, killing 350.

Towns along the Code River near Yogyakarta are under constant threat from flooding as rivers ar swollen by seasonal rains, ash and lava.

This is one of my favorite photo of Merapi. I make this photo from Deles village in Sidorejo area and location is 6 KM from the mountain's top.

The Ijen volcano complex is a group of stratovolcanoes, in East Java, Indonesia. It is inside a larger caldera Ijen, which is about 20 kilometers wide. The Gunung Merapi stratovolcano is the highest point of that complex. The name of this volcano resembles that of a different volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, also known as Gunung Merapi; there is also a third volcano named Marapi in Sumatra. The name "Merapi" means "fire" in the Indonesian language.

West of Gunung Merapi is the Ijen volcano, which has a one-kilometer-wide turquoise-colored acid crater lake. The lake is the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation, in which sulfur-laden baskets are carried by hand from the crater floor. The work is low-paid and very onerous. Workers earn around $5.50-$8.30 (Rp 50,000 - Rp 75,000) per day and once out of the crater, still need to carry their loads of sulfur chunks about three kilometers to the nearby Pultuding valley to get paid.

Many other post-caldera cones and craters are located within the caldera or along its rim. The largest concentration of post-caldera cones forms an east/west-trending zone across the southern side of the caldera. The active crater at Kawah Ijen has an equivalent radius of 361 metres (1,184 ft), a surface of 0.41 square kilometres (0.16 sq mi). It is 200 metres (660 ft) deep and has a volume of 36 cubic hectometres (29,000 acre·ft).

In 2008, explorer George Kourounis took a small rubber boat out onto the acid lake to measure its acidity. The pH of the water in the crater was measured to be 0.5 due to sulfuric acid.

Iyoyo, a 48 year old farmer, believes the worst is still to come: "I know the characteristics of the mountain" he explains. "Every hundred years we have a major eruption. The worst is still to come." Iyoyo fled his village three days ago as it was engulfed by an avalanche of hot gas and ash. He has now found shelter in Yogyakarta's main football stadium.

Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Sri Prihatin (25) and Neli Agustina (7) cook near the ruins of their home in Pangukrejo, Village Umbulharjo,Cangkringan, Sleman (12/12/2010). After the revocation status of Mount Merapi, residents began returning to their home location. Villagers change his devastated yard into kitchen and food stall. Numbers of visiting tourists who want to see the condition of post-eruption of Merapi slopes become one of blessing for local people. Residents whose property destroyed, rely solely on the income from selling food, a motorcycle taxi or parking officer, and community contributions.

Mount Merapi, Gunung Merapi, is still erupting on 30 November 2010 however due to lower eruptive activity on 3 December 2010 the official alert status was reduced to level 3. Image was captured on 27 December 2010 around 08:30am.

This is one of the views of active Merapi Volcano taken on Plawangan hill, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Mount Merapi, Gunung Merapi (literally Fire Mountain in Indonesian/Javanese), is an active stratovolcano located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. It is located approximately 28 kilometers (17 mi) north of Yogyakarta city, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano, with villages as high as 1,700 meters (5,600 ft) above sea level.

Hot gas from a large explosion killed 27 people on 22 November in 1994, mostly in the town of Muntilan, west of the volcano. Another large eruption occurred in 2006, shortly before the Yogyakarta earthquake. In light of the hazards that Merapi poses to populated areas, it has been designated as one of the Decade Volcanoes.

On 25 October 2010 the Indonesian government raised the alert for Mount Merapi to its highest level and warned villagers in threatened areas to move to safer ground. People living within a 20 km (12.5 mile) zone were told to evacuate. Officials said about 500 volcanic earthquakes had been recorded on the mountain over the weekend of 23–24 October, and that the magma had risen to about 1 kilometer (3,300 ft) below the surface due to the seismic activity. On the afternoon of 25 October 2010 Mount Merapi erupted lava from its southern and southeastern slopes.

The mountain was still erupting on 30 November 2010 however due to lowered eruptive activity on 3 December 2010 the official alert status was reduced to level 3.
