The Instrument of Troubled Dreams is een site-specifieke installatie van Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, gecomponeerd in en rondom de Oude Kerk.
Een raaf vliegt door de ruimte; een eenzame roeier dobbert tussen de pilaren in de overstroomde kerk; een boot vol mensen wordt geraakt door een storm voor de kust; Sweelinck componeert bij het orgel; een golf bommenwerpers scheurt voorbij; de politie doorzoekt een klein appartement, een reuzenrad drijft voorbij op een binnenschip.
The Instrument of Troubled Dreams, opgesteld in het hoogkoor van de kerk, overspoelt je met geluiden. Langzaam vermengen zich de ruim zeven eeuwen bestaan van de Oude Kerk met het hier en nu, en ontstaat een aangrijpend moment in het bewustzijn van het oudste gebouw in Amsterdam. Met zicht op de lichtinval vanuit het oosten, bespeel je een zogenaamde mellotron. Deze voorloper van de sampler uit de jaren tachtig is door de kunstenaars omgebouwd tot een surround geluidsinstallatie waarbij 28 speakers de ruimte opnieuw vormgeven. De Mellotron heeft 72 toetsen, elke toets is geprogrammeerd om een ander geluidseffect, vocaal nummer of muzikaal gedeelte af te spelen.
Het werk draait om een speciaal voor de Oude Kerk gecomponeerd verhaal waarin gesproken woord, muziek (onder andere Sweelinck gespeeld op het Vater-Müller Orgel en de Sweelinck cantorij van de Oudekerkgemeente) de ingrediënten vormen. Veel van de geluiden zijn in de maanden voor de opening opgenomen in en rondom de Oude Kerk; watergeluiden, de wind, het luiden van de klok en het kraken van de zoldering. Al spelend creeer je zelf een filmische omgeving, waardoor jij en de andere aanwezigen de kerk anders gaan ervaren. Het geheugen, jouw voorkeur, onvoorspelbaarheid en het mysterie van de techniek spelen een rol in de totstandkoming van een tijdelijke soundtrack

Jan Hammer (Czech pronunciation: [ˈjan ˈɦamɛr]) (born 17 April 1948) is a Czech-born American musician, composer and record producer. He first gained his most visible audience while playing keyboards with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early 1970s, as well as his film scores for television and film including "Miami Vice Theme" and "Crockett's Theme", from the popular 1980s program, Miami Vice. He has continued to work as both a musical performer and producer, expanding to producing film later in his career.
Hammer has collaborated with some of the era's most influential jazz and rock musicians such as John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Mick Jagger, Carlos Santana, Stanley Clarke, Tommy Bolin, Neal Schon, Steve Lukather, and Elvin Jones among many others. He has composed and produced at least 14 original motion picture soundtracks, the music for 90 episodes of Miami Vice and 20 episodes of the popular British television series Chancer.
His compositions have won him several Grammy Awards.

Attualmente festeggia il suo 50° anno come musicista professionista, tastierista, compositore e broadcaster, Rick Wakeman si esibirà in un concerto di solo pianoforte, il 3 maggio al Teatro Manzoni di Milano.
Nato nei pressi di Londra nel 1949 e diplomato all'Opera della capitale, pianista classico passato alle tastiere, Wakeman – soprannominato "la lunga chioma bionda del rock" - ha iniziato la sua carriera negli anni '60 come turnista, arrivando a incidere anche trenta pezzi l'anno. Entrato a far parte di uno dei gruppi precursori del rock sinfonico, gli Strawbs, è poi approdato ai mitici Yes, con i quali, in pratica, inventò un nuovo modo di usare le tastiere e il Minimoog, aprendo letteralmente la strada alle moderne tecniche e ai suoni del progressive-rock.
Da ottobre 2016 Rick Wakeman è impegnato con Jon Anderson e Trevor Rabin con il progetto ARW che ha fatto registrare tutti "sold out" negli Stati Uniti e sarà da marzo 2017 in tour in Europa, Israele, Giappone e poi ancora negli Stati Uniti.
Come solista ha inciso tra l'altro "The Six Wives of Henry VIII", altro successo planetario con i suoi oltre 10 milioni di copie vendute. È stato inoltre, per anni, l'arrangiatore di David Bowie con cui ha scritto la celebre "Life on Mars" e di Elton John e ha realizzato album con numerosi altri artisti, tra i quali Cat Stevens, Black Sabbath e Lou Reed.
Il 13 gennaio è uscito l'album "Piano portraits" ed è già un successo in quanto è stato ed è il primo album solista di pianoforte ad entrare nella Top 10 del Regno Unito.
Il disco è composto da 15 brani partendo da "Life on Mars" di David Bowie – canzone per la quale Rick Wakeman registrò le parti originali di pianoforte - e "Space Oddity", a cui ha contribuito con il mellotron, passando attraverso Beatles, Yes e Led Zeppelin. Oltre a pezzi classici composti da Debussy e Tchaikovsky. Ha anche aggiunto una selezione di alcuni dei suoi pezzi classici preferiti (Berceuse, Clair de Lune e Swan Lake).
Lo show comprenderà almeno otto dei pezzi dell'album, più altre sorprese musicali.

American singer born Charles Westover on 30th December 1934.
Sprang to fame in 1961 with his single "Runaway", a highly distinctive recording featuring his trademark falsetto. Accompanied by Max Crook, his keyboard player on 'Mellotron', they fashioned a new sound that gave Del a number one hit in both the USA and Great Britain.
Del, who described himself as a sort of 'Pop Rock 'n' Roller', was probably more popular in Britain & Australia than he was in his own country.
Sadly, Del passed away on 8th February 1990 of a self inflicted gunshot wound, aged 55.
The above album, Del's 6th, was released in 1965 on the "Stateside Label", a division of EMI and contained one of Del's biggest hits "Keep Searchin", which was to be his last top ten hit in the UK.

OK, way too many videos have been posted of Ellatron with just a backing track, without it being played live. So today I set myself a challenge - as a non-pianist, demonstrate the awesome Smallville meteorite-like powers of Ellatron's chordbanks to enable a clumsy, fat-fingered non-pianist to successfully reproduce everybody's favourite Mellotron intro.
Here we go - crack knuckles, deep breath, and fire up the iPod Touch - Strawberry Fields anyone?

The Memotron is a digital remake of one of the most unusual and fascinating electronic music instruments. The classical design and the configuration of the display and knobs are based on the original instrument.
A comprehensive sound library with high qualitative samples of original instruments of the Sixties and Seventies gives you the chance to experience the legendary sound of Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Procul Harum, Genesis, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream. Sounds can be load up from a CD, individually combined and stored up on compact flash cards.

The rotaries are nicer now, more like the old tron - I wasn't happy with the rubbery blue look. The top right screen and the big chord panel are now fully reconfigurable, in that everything is drawn on an overlay layer with blending, rather than being integrated into the pre-rendered background like the metallic rotaries or the ebonies and ivories. The little grey arrows (voice+ and voice-) beside the voice and bank markers are also soft, as the ones on row D need to be removed when in 'unlooped' mode, as in this mode we only have ABC and not ABC + Pads on D.
And the little keyboard icon matches the actual keyboard below.
Soon this will compile and run - and I shall grab an image off the iPad once that happens, and rejoice ... but the Gabriel stuff is taking up my days, tronning is back to evenings right now, so progress is slow. Also as a result of conversation with Martin the Mellotron Man, a bit of feature creep - really good feature creep, but feature creep nonetheless - has snuck in, which will need a modification or two to the synth engine. It's all to do with Guy Chambers' vibes and Edgar Froese's piano, coupled with Rod Argent's strings. All at once. More later ...

RICK WAKEMAN
Wakeman nació en el suburbio Perivale, al Oeste de Londres, y asistió a la escuela Drayton Manor Grammar School. Estudió piano, clarinete, orquestación y música moderna en el Colegio Real de Música pero abandonó motu proprio después de un año y medio, para dedicarse a trabajar como músico de sesión.
En 1970 y 1971, Wakeman tocó con el grupo Strawbs, y grabó con ellos los álbumes Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios y From the Witchwood. Antes había contribuido como sesionista en el álbum Dragonfly (1970), de Strawbs.
Especialmente entre 1969 y 1973, Wakeman fue un músico de estudio muy activo, y tocó con artistas como David Bowie, Cat Stevens y Al Stewart. Tocó piano (o Mellotrón) en el disco Space Oddity, Life on Mars?, Changes y Oh! You Pretty Things (de Bowie), y en Morning Has Broken (de Stevens). En 1985, Wakeman colaboró otra vez con Bowie en Absolute Beginners.
Wakeman entró en la banda de rock Yes en 1971, después de que el grupo le pidiera al teclista Tony Kaye que abandonara el grupo debido a la negación de este músico por tocar nada más que el órgano Hammond. El primer álbum de Wakeman con esta banda fue Fragile (estrenado en 1971 en RU y en 1972 en EE. UU.) y el último fue Tales from Topographic Oceans (lanzado en 1973). También tocó en el álbum de estudio Close to the Edge (su álbum de Yes favorito) y sus ejecuciones en vivo fueron lanzadas como Yessongs. El show fue muy bien recibido, pero su costo era extravagante y lo hizo declarar bancarrota.
De todos los miembros de Yes, Wakeman es el único carnívoro, una diferencia que lo alejó de los estrictos vegetarianos miembros del grupo. This is a picture of our M400. People do weird things to personalize their instruments. Our Mellotron's previous owner wrapped the entire instrument in white vinyl. While this isn't necessarily visually appealing, you can place a drink on the instrument without worry of leaving a ring.

Uno dei musicisti più interessanti a livello nazionale, un avantgardista popolare, se mi concedete l'ossimoro, e un "educatore" delle folle, musicalmente parlando. Quelle folle, che forse lo infastidiscono anche, specie quando parliamo dell'oceano televisivo che ormai da alcuni anni lo idolatra e lo associa alle star di Novella3000, quelle folle che chiedono a gran voce il bis, proprio a lui, che in concerto improvvisa tutto come fosse a casa sua e non ama ripetersi. Eppure non è sempre stato così... "Come Quando" dieci anni fa, che come novello Bowie, replicava l'epopea di Bowie, Fripp e Eno. Morgan, con la sua smania per l'errore, sistematicamente inserito ovunque, ancor di più ora che è ossessionato dalla perfezione del grande schermo, è sempre più "contro sé stesso". Si potrebbe riempire un abisso con parole, per cercare di descrivere il dittico Morgan-Marco, sperimentatore-cantautore, ribelle-VIP, ma lascio questo a chi è più bravo di me con le parole.
Vi lascio alcune foto, a mala pena riuscite, di questo concerto in Ancona. Dopo pochi minuti i fogli canzonieri sparsi a terra, deposta giacca e camicia in favore di una più comoda e fresca magliettaccia viola, il concerto prende forma, con Lui che decompone i brani con il piano, in singole note, smonta miti come Bowie e Lou Reed, ma con affetto, a suon di voce grottesca e pugni sul piano.
