Genesis - Wind & Wuthering 1976 Canadian Atco Pressing
Possibly my very favorite Genesis album. The Gabriel-less line-up sounds even more confident here and Phil has effortlessly assumed front-man position. I'm in the minority I know, but 1976 to 1981 is my favorite Genesis period, although I love them all (even the Ray Wilson-era). Phil's schoolboy vocals suit the sweeping nature of these songs to a tee, most of which are Tony-heavy compositions. Guitars are de-emphasized, leading Steve Hackett to tire of the group and leave...but not before co-writing the beautiful "Blood on the Rooftops", an absolute triumph for the band and one of their most overlooked songs. Anchored by a lilting nylon guitar, and billowed by Tony's soaring mellotron, this song features a subtle yet majestic lyric essentially about British couch potatoes that Ray Davies would have been proud to pen. Top points to Phil as well who delivers the lyric brilliantly, applying his falsetto sparingly but effectively. And of course, there's Afterglow, a watershed recording for Genesis, and a staple in their set for years to come. Yup, I LOVE this album.
This is a Canadian Atco pressing that was probably picked up in a thrift store years ago, before I even owned a record player. You can hear some crackle and pops between songs but otherwise the vinyl is quiet and the musicality of the songs shines through. I've never understood the complaints over the lack of bass on the various masterings of this album (LP and CD), the mix has always sounded perfect to me. Besides, Genesis have never been a bass heavy band to begin with. That aside, the mastering is dynamic, especially on One for the Vine, wow! I really enjoyed playing this tonight. Gotta love these fellas.

Nato nei pressi di Londra nel 1949 e diplomato all'Opera della capitale, pianista classico passato alle tastiere, Wakeman – soprannominato "la lunga chioma bionda del rock" - ha iniziato la sua carriera negli anni '60 come turnista, arrivando a incidere anche trenta pezzi l'anno. Entrato a far parte di uno dei gruppi precursori del rock sinfonico, gli Strawbs, è poi approdato ai mitici Yes, con i quali, in pratica, inventò un nuovo modo di usare le tastiere e il Minimoog, aprendo letteralmente la strada alle moderne tecniche e ai suoni del progressive-rock.
Da ottobre 2016 Rick Wakeman è impegnato con Jon Anderson e Trevor Rabin con il progetto ARW che ha fatto registrare tutti "sold out" negli Stati Uniti e sarà da marzo 2017 in tour in Europa, Israele, Giappone e poi ancora negli Stati Uniti.
Come solista ha inciso tra l'altro "The Six Wives of Henry VIII", altro successo planetario con i suoi oltre 10 milioni di copie vendute. È stato inoltre, per anni, l'arrangiatore di David Bowie con cui ha scritto la celebre "Life on Mars" e di Elton John e ha realizzato album con numerosi altri artisti, tra i quali Cat Stevens, Black Sabbath e Lou Reed.
Il 13 gennaio è uscito l'album "Piano portraits" ed è già un successo in quanto è stato ed è il primo album solista di pianoforte ad entrare nella Top 10 del Regno Unito.
Il disco è composto da 15 brani partendo da "Life on Mars" di David Bowie – canzone per la quale Rick Wakeman registrò le parti originali di pianoforte - e "Space Oddity", a cui ha contribuito con il mellotron, passando attraverso Beatles, Yes e Led Zeppelin. Oltre a pezzi classici composti da Debussy e Tchaikovsky. Ha anche aggiunto una selezione di alcuni dei suoi pezzi classici preferiti (Berceuse, Clair de Lune e Swan Lake).
Lo show comprenderà almeno otto dei pezzi dell'album, più altre sorprese musicali.

Studio version. Apparently written after a taunt from George Harrison that the band never did ballads. Layered acoustic and electric guitars from Jimmy and some sumptious strings, arranged and played by John Paul Jones on his Mellotron. Gorgeous tune.
Live version from 1973. The visuals are from The Song Remains The Same film - each band member had a "dream" sequence where they acted out their fantasies. So here's Robert being all Celtic.
Matt Ellis’ new Double A-Side Single, “Candy / Dangers of the Night” is OUT NOW. The follow up to 2010′s “Births, Deaths & Marriages” features a cover of “Candy” the Iggy Pop hit off 1990′s “Brick By Brick”. Ellis has slowed the duet down, drenching it with pedal steel, fiddle and banjo, giving it an Americana swagger and making it one of his own. Matt’s wife, Vavine, joins him on the track performing the female vocals made famous by Kate Pierson on the original.
The B-Side, “Dangers Of The Night”, is a new original tune featuring returning guest, Jacob Valenzuela (Calexico) on trumpet. The upbeat desert rocker showcases Ellis’ storytelling, taking the listener on a wild ride with two characters that meet an untimely end.
Produced by Matt Ellis, the two tracks were recorded by Ronan Chris Murphy at Veneto West in Santa Monica and mixed by Craig Schumacher (“Births, Deaths…”) at WaveLab in Tucson, Az. The single was mastered by J.J. Golden.

I don't usually have permission from my kiddos to share their world here often, but today my oldest just finished some time recording at the Unknown in Anacortes. He was delighted by the opportunity to play organs he's only dreamed about, including a Mellotron!!! He wants to press it into a CD, so keep a keen eye out for more details when it's available!

Bill Rieflin's kit, displaying the cover image of their forthcoming cd, I believe. All three kits had the same image on them.
There was a keyboard which sounded a lot like a mellotron tucked in on his left which he played at times.
I was hoping to have this finished - as in totally, totally, totally finished - by the end of today. It is so close. Every single thing, bar the synthesizer, is in place.
Touches of keys and chords are being converted into MIDI note on / note off commands, chords are being recorded, chordbanks are saved and restored. The routing of keys->ABC or D / pads-> ABC or D is back. Everything is - and blimey, finally I wrote something right - driven by the 'model'. The 'view' knows about nothing except visuals, the 'controllers' are managed sensibly, and very CPU-efficiently in terms of processing of touch events and touch event lifecycle.
Now I just need to tie in the Tron and pass the note commands into it. There may be a need for one more control screen to allow learning of MIDI controllers, but I can do that as a refresh, right now so long as the pitch wheel maps to pitch, expression/mod wheel maps to ABC, and the standard MIDI volume control maps to volume, that's enough. Tone can be fiddled with on screen for now. Maybe ...

The Instrument of Troubled Dreams is een site-specifieke installatie van Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, gecomponeerd in en rondom de Oude Kerk.
Een raaf vliegt door de ruimte; een eenzame roeier dobbert tussen de pilaren in de overstroomde kerk; een boot vol mensen wordt geraakt door een storm voor de kust; Sweelinck componeert bij het orgel; een golf bommenwerpers scheurt voorbij; de politie doorzoekt een klein appartement, een reuzenrad drijft voorbij op een binnenschip.
The Instrument of Troubled Dreams, opgesteld in het hoogkoor van de kerk, overspoelt je met geluiden. Langzaam vermengen zich de ruim zeven eeuwen bestaan van de Oude Kerk met het hier en nu, en ontstaat een aangrijpend moment in het bewustzijn van het oudste gebouw in Amsterdam. Met zicht op de lichtinval vanuit het oosten, bespeel je een zogenaamde mellotron. Deze voorloper van de sampler uit de jaren tachtig is door de kunstenaars omgebouwd tot een surround geluidsinstallatie waarbij 28 speakers de ruimte opnieuw vormgeven. De Mellotron heeft 72 toetsen, elke toets is geprogrammeerd om een ander geluidseffect, vocaal nummer of muzikaal gedeelte af te spelen.
Het werk draait om een speciaal voor de Oude Kerk gecomponeerd verhaal waarin gesproken woord, muziek (onder andere Sweelinck gespeeld op het Vater-Müller Orgel en de Sweelinck cantorij van de Oudekerkgemeente) de ingrediënten vormen. Veel van de geluiden zijn in de maanden voor de opening opgenomen in en rondom de Oude Kerk; watergeluiden, de wind, het luiden van de klok en het kraken van de zoldering. Al spelend creeer je zelf een filmische omgeving, waardoor jij en de andere aanwezigen de kerk anders gaan ervaren. Het geheugen, jouw voorkeur, onvoorspelbaarheid en het mysterie van de techniek spelen een rol in de totstandkoming van een tijdelijke soundtrack

Uno dei musicisti più interessanti a livello nazionale, un avantgardista popolare, se mi concedete l'ossimoro, e un "educatore" delle folle, musicalmente parlando. Quelle folle, che forse lo infastidiscono anche, specie quando parliamo dell'oceano televisivo che ormai da alcuni anni lo idolatra e lo associa alle star di Novella3000, quelle folle che chiedono a gran voce il bis, proprio a lui, che in concerto improvvisa tutto come fosse a casa sua e non ama ripetersi. Eppure non è sempre stato così... "Come Quando" dieci anni fa, che come novello Bowie, replicava l'epopea di Bowie, Fripp e Eno. Morgan, con la sua smania per l'errore, sistematicamente inserito ovunque, ancor di più ora che è ossessionato dalla perfezione del grande schermo, è sempre più "contro sé stesso". Si potrebbe riempire un abisso con parole, per cercare di descrivere il dittico Morgan-Marco, sperimentatore-cantautore, ribelle-VIP, ma lascio questo a chi è più bravo di me con le parole.
Vi lascio alcune foto, a mala pena riuscite, di questo concerto in Ancona. Dopo pochi minuti i fogli canzonieri sparsi a terra, deposta giacca e camicia in favore di una più comoda e fresca magliettaccia viola, il concerto prende forma, con Lui che decompone i brani con il piano, in singole note, smonta miti come Bowie e Lou Reed, ma con affetto, a suon di voce grottesca e pugni sul piano.
Per me Morgan è diventato un nume tra le molteplici identità che mi affollano la mente, pronto a investigare con me nuovi orizzonti sonori quando ascolto musica per "marimba y computadora" e strappare le corde del pianoforte nei momenti di odio, a suonare il Mellotron quando mi si para di fronte un tramonto, e a elargire citazioni da pessimi film di Jarmusch quando l'occasione si presenti.
A questo punto potremmo riempire la fossa delle Marianne con altre parole spese sulle mie molteplici personalità, che impersonano personaggi a personalità multipla...

The Instrument of Troubled Dreams is een site-specifieke installatie van Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, gecomponeerd in en rondom de Oude Kerk.
Een raaf vliegt door de ruimte; een eenzame roeier dobbert tussen de pilaren in de overstroomde kerk; een boot vol mensen wordt geraakt door een storm voor de kust; Sweelinck componeert bij het orgel; een golf bommenwerpers scheurt voorbij; de politie doorzoekt een klein appartement, een reuzenrad drijft voorbij op een binnenschip.
The Instrument of Troubled Dreams, opgesteld in het hoogkoor van de kerk, overspoelt je met geluiden. Langzaam vermengen zich de ruim zeven eeuwen bestaan van de Oude Kerk met het hier en nu, en ontstaat een aangrijpend moment in het bewustzijn van het oudste gebouw in Amsterdam. Met zicht op de lichtinval vanuit het oosten, bespeel je een zogenaamde mellotron. Deze voorloper van de sampler uit de jaren tachtig is door de kunstenaars omgebouwd tot een surround geluidsinstallatie waarbij 28 speakers de ruimte opnieuw vormgeven. De Mellotron heeft 72 toetsen, elke toets is geprogrammeerd om een ander geluidseffect, vocaal nummer of muzikaal gedeelte af te spelen.
Het werk draait om een speciaal voor de Oude Kerk gecomponeerd verhaal waarin gesproken woord, muziek (onder andere Sweelinck gespeeld op het Vater-Müller Orgel en de Sweelinck cantorij van de Oudekerkgemeente) de ingrediënten vormen. Veel van de geluiden zijn in de maanden voor de opening opgenomen in en rondom de Oude Kerk; watergeluiden, de wind, het luiden van de klok en het kraken van de zoldering. Al spelend creeer je zelf een filmische omgeving, waardoor jij en de andere aanwezigen de kerk anders gaan ervaren. Het geheugen, jouw voorkeur, onvoorspelbaarheid en het mysterie van de techniek spelen een rol in de totstandkoming van een tijdelijke soundtrack

Jan Hammer (Czech pronunciation: [ˈjan ˈɦamɛr]) (born 17 April 1948) is a Czech-born American musician, composer and record producer. He first gained his most visible audience while playing keyboards with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early 1970s, as well as his film scores for television and film including "Miami Vice Theme" and "Crockett's Theme", from the popular 1980s program, Miami Vice. He has continued to work as both a musical performer and producer, expanding to producing film later in his career.
Hammer has collaborated with some of the era's most influential jazz and rock musicians such as John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Mick Jagger, Carlos Santana, Stanley Clarke, Tommy Bolin, Neal Schon, Steve Lukather, and Elvin Jones among many others. He has composed and produced at least 14 original motion picture soundtracks, the music for 90 episodes of Miami Vice and 20 episodes of the popular British television series Chancer.
His compositions have won him several Grammy Awards.

American singer born Charles Westover on 30th December 1934.
Sprang to fame in 1961 with his single "Runaway", a highly distinctive recording featuring his trademark falsetto. Accompanied by Max Crook, his keyboard player on 'Mellotron', they fashioned a new sound that gave Del a number one hit in both the USA and Great Britain.
Del, who described himself as a sort of 'Pop Rock 'n' Roller', was probably more popular in Britain & Australia than he was in his own country.
Sadly, Del passed away on 8th February 1990 of a self inflicted gunshot wound, aged 55.
The above album, Del's 6th, was released in 1965 on the "Stateside Label", a division of EMI and contained one of Del's biggest hits "Keep Searchin", which was to be his last top ten hit in the UK.
