Looking for fruits close to a Guava tree, this beautiful bird is the most elusive, next to the Black Headed Oriole and Ceylon Paradise Flycatcher, who stops occasionally at our home garden.

BROWN HEADED BARBET :
The Brown-headed Barbet or Large Green Barbet (Megalaima zeylanica) is an Asian barbet. Barbets and toucans are a group of near passerine birds with a worldwide tropical distribution. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills.
The Brown-headed Barbet is a resident breeder in India and Sri Lanka. It is an arboreal species of gardens and wooded country which eats fruit and insects. It nests in a tree hole, laying 2-4 eggs. The bird is largely frugivorous on mangos, ripe jack, papaya, banana, figs and similar cultivated fruit trees. Its habitat includes urban and country gardens though it tends to eschew heavy forest. It nests in a suitable hole in a tree that it will often excavate out, not unlike a woodpecker. A pair will take it in turns to incubate the eggs and they often communicate with each other using their Kura, kura calls.
This is a relatively large barbet at 27 cm. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, large head and short tail.
The adult has a streaked brown head, neck and breast, with a yellow eye patch. The rest of the plumage is green. The bill is thick and red. Sexes are similar.
The White-cheeked Barbet largely replaces this species in the Western Ghats and hilly parts of southern peninsular India although both species may occur in many places. The calls of this species is similar but the white cheek patch is distinctive.
The call is a repetitive kutroo…kutroo…kutroo. Others take up the call when one starts. Somewhat silent in the winter.

White-cheeked Barbet (Megalaima viridis)
The White-cheeked Barbet is a species of barbet found in southern India. This species has a distinctive supercilium and a broad white cheek stripe below the eye and is endemic to the forest areas of the Western Ghats and adjoining hills.Like all other Asian barbets they are mainly frugivorous although they may sometimes eat insects and they use their bills to excavate nest cavities in trees.
You must have heard in the cities too , this continuous calls , but very difficult to spot them. The fig is their first love and this is the season, which keeps them busy and happy. As long as you hear them, re-assuring sounds of a healthy tree nearby.

五色鳥（學名：Megalaima oorti）因其羽毛有五種顏色而得名。該鳥在中國大陸稱為「黑眉擬啄木鳥」。
身常約20～23公分，喙基上黑色嘴鬚發達，身體多為翠綠色，頭部大部份為藍色，額頭和喉部有黃色分佈，眼先和前頸有小部份紅色，眼部至耳羽上方則為黑色，粗厚嘴部為黑色，腳鉛灰色。叫聲單調而大聲，類似敲木魚「郭、郭郭郭郭……」[1]，因而又被稱作「花和尚」。在繁殖時會啄樹洞築巢。
