The Coppersmith Barbet, Crimson-breasted Barbet or Coppersmith (Megalaima haemacephala), is a bird with crimson forehead and throat which is best known for its metronomic call that has been likened to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer. It is a resident found in the Indian Subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. Like other barbets, they chisel out a hole inside a tree to build their nest. They are mainly fruit eating but will take sometimes insects, especially winged termites.

The bird is also known in तांबट(Tambat in Marathi) and as छोटा बसन्ता ( Chotta Basanta in Hindi).

..this little guy was on top of a dried-up teak tree, vociferously calling out to his mate, when I spotted him..had to really try hard to get the right angle....fortunately, the skylight wasn't that harsh....

Taiwan Barbet (Megalaima nuchalis), Guandu, Taipei, Taiwan

The Chinese name for the bird, "five-colored bird" (五色鳥) refers to the five colors seen on its plumage. Because of its colorful plumage and that its call resembles that of a percussion instrument known as a wooden fish, the species is also referred to as the "spotted monk of the forest" in Taiwan.

It inhabits tropical and subtropical forests. It forages in the upper and middle levels of the canopy. It excavates a nest hole in a tree but little else is known about its breeding habits.

Brown Headed Barbet

The brown-headed barbet or large green barbet (Megalaima zeylanica) is an Asian barbet. Barbets and toucans are a group of near passerine birds with a worldwide tropical distribution. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills.

The brown-headed barbet is a resident breeder in the Indian subcontinent, widespread in India and also seen in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. It is an arboreal species of gardens and wooded country which eats fruit and insects. Nonetheless, it is fairly tolerant of humans and is often seen in cities, in greenery. It nests in a tree hole, laying 2-4 eggs. The bird is largely frugivorous on mangos, ripe jack, papaya, banana, figs and similar cultivated fruit trees. Its habitat includes urban and country gardens though it tends to eschew heavy forest. It nests in a suitable hole in a tree that it will often excavate out, not unlike a woodpecker. A pair will take it in turns to incubate the eggs and they often communicate with each other using their Kura, kura calls.

This is a relatively large barbet at 27 cm. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, large head and short tail.

The adult has a streaked brown head, neck and breast, with a yellow eye patch. The rest of the plumage is green. The bill is thick and red. Sexes are similar.

The white-cheeked barbet largely replaces this species in the Western Ghats and hilly parts of southern peninsular India although both species may occur in many places. The calls of this species is similar but the white cheek patch is distinctive.

The call is a repetitive kutroo…kutroo…kutroo. Others take up the call when one starts. Somewhat silent in the winter.

the only real camera malfuctions due to humidity happened around this point, not taking the rain cover off the lens after the rain stopped was probably the culprit. thankfully once i took it off the camera and lens started to fuction normally again.

Khao Yai. This fella was actually chipping away at the dead tree!

All the while I was looking out for that ‘man thing’ to appear from behind but it was nowhere to be found. I was wondering how do they do it?

It goes like this…. The male does not possess a penis as most birds don’t

Instead both sexes possess a special organ known as a cloaca. When they get into position as seen above, their cloacas are pressed together and the sperm is transfer from the male to the female, in a fraction of a second !! This action is called a cloacal kiss. The pair would repeat the process numerous times throughout the day for many days. I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy doing that, but for a bird it’s all about quantity and not quality

However the female will be awarded with a berry after each intense session.

When the male runs out of berries he would then quickly looks for more in preparation for the next round of excitement. Notice the female hunch forward to facilitate the process while the male on top of her desperately trying to attach his organ to hers.

Just imagine you have to do it with a mouthful of melons, balance delicately on her back, on top of a tree doing the aiming....all roll into one....I give up...

Most male birds do not have a penis with the exception of ducks and geese which possess a whopping penis length of 18 inches (that is even one inch longer than mine!!)

They need such scary length because ducks and geese do it over water. They can't simply rub cloacas as water will swallow their precious sperm.

The long length will ensure deep and fast delivery of its load inside the female reproductive organ. Ducklings guaranteed

Please bear in mind most animals do not make love for fun like we naughty humans do. They do it for the survival of their species and they are very serious about it. They are genetically programmed to carry out such task to ensure the continuation of its own kind and inadvertently providing fascination to humans, especially photographers like myself 😊
