New blog:

Some owls talk a lot, some are quieter. ;-)

©Lela Bouse-McCracken ::: The Great Egret Ardea alba, also known as the Great White Egret, White Heron, or Common Egret, is a wading egret, found in most of the tropical and warmer temperate parts of the world. Apart from size, the Great Egret can be distinguished from other white egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet. It breeds in colonies in trees close to large lakes with reed beds or other extensive wetlands. It builds a bulky stick nest.

And watching them build those nests and perch in the tops of trees is something I wish all of you could see! It's simply incredible. I had never seen them roosting or tending nests - I was used to seeing them feeding in shallow water. :-)

So like the Great Whites, I've come home to "roost" for a while. hehe ;-)

©Lela Bouse-McCracken ::: We've been gone again and until I get a chance to go through my pics from the week, you get one from the spring. I did not recall seeing these bumps/fins on the pelican's beaks...but after researching it, I found out that it marks them as breeding males. How bout that? :-) And of course the Punk Rocker hairdo needs no explanation. ;-)

©Lela Bouse-McCracken -- This photo was taken in south central Colorado near Wolf Creek Pass. It appears to have too much white around and below it's eye to be a Ruby Throated. Is it possibly an Anna? Or what?? Help. :-)

©Lela Bouse-McCracken ::: Some of the absolute cutest chicks in the rookery are the baby Great White Egrets. And their mother puts up with a lot of abuse when she feeds them...especially when they get the size of these two. Plus, aggression among nestlings is common and large chicks frequently kill their smaller siblings. That's easy to believe after watching the feeding frenzy.

©Lela Bouse-McCracken ::: I've been visiting south central Colorado for several years and always associate the area's wildlife with mammals - deer, elk, bear, etc. But never, ever did I know that close by is a refuge that boasts White-faced Ibis in addition to several other species of birds. They seemed out of place. Aren't they supposed to be at the beach? ;-)

In addition, it was *very* surprising to see that this Ibis discovered a salamander in one of the shallow ponds. He was so proud of it that he flew several circles before landing with it again....either that, or he didn't know what to do with it. ;-)

©Lela Bouse-McCracken ::: Just returned from a week at Beavers Bend State Park in Southeastern Oklahoma. The Mountain Fork river feeds nearby Broken Bow Lake and leaves it at the spillway. It's a beautiful place in any season.

Never judge a book by its cover! Let me be clear, I bought this book for Matilda Breuer's illustrations, which here are charmingly simple (I asked for more photos before I purchased from this bookseller). However, the publisher did the old bait and switch here by pasting a fantastic, richly colored illustration done by another artist for another publication altogether to the front of the book. Someone shopping for a child's gift in a hurry would think that all the illustrations would be like this, I'm sure. But Breuer's style is wonderful for the subject matter; see if you agree!

“My Magic Storyland” by Nellie M. Rowe. Illustrated by Matilda Breuer, except for the cover, which was illustrated by James McCracken. Albert Whitman Co., 1929.

Once again...I dragged it from the crypt. ;-)

"And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting

On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;

And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,

And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;

And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor

Shall be lifted - nevermore!"

Happy Halloween, flickr people. Be safe out there and stay alert. ;-)

This American Plantation style mansion was built in 1890 for wealthy brewer Collier McCracken hence the Scottish name of the house. This 27 roomed mansion with Corinthian columns and veranda sits impressively in Leslie Street. In 1911 it was sold to Edward Coles who established the famed Australian Coles Book Arcade. In 1918 it was sold to the Anglican Church. In 1920 the Lowther Anglican Girls Grammar School opened in the renamed mansion from then onwards known as Lowther Hall.

"Hannah McCracken Kelly, our mother, taken after her death."

Hannah B. McCracken was the daughter of John and Mary McCracken (or Mecracken), who farmed in Claysville, Washington County, Pennsylvania, during the early 19th Century. Named after the “Great Compromiser” U.S. Senator Henry Clay (1777-1852), the town is located on the line of the Cumberland Road which forms its Main Street. Claysville is 18 miles east of Wheeling, West Virginia, and 10 miles west of Washington, Pennsylvania. The town was laid out in 1817 and remained unincorporated until 1832.

John McCracken was born about 1795 in Pennsylvania and died 28 December, 1865, in Claysville. His wife, Mary, the daughter of Samuel Caldwell of Buffalo Township, was born in about 1797 and died 4 August, 1878. The couple married in Washington County on 30 December, 1820. They are buried together in the old Purviance Cemetery, Claysville.

A second copy of this daguerreotype exists and was sold on eBay in July 2012. Almost unbelievably, a third copy, located in Australia, was sold on eBay in October 2012. It must be assumed that each of Hannah's children had a copy of this image. Mine appears to be the original and the only one with identifying information enclosed.

The Adare site was bought by Governor Hindmarsh's family in 1837. The Cudmore family bought it in 1891 and made extensive additions which resulted in an impressive layout including 19 rooms, a cellar, tower, balcony and three turrets. The house was completed in 1893 and named "Adare" after the Cudmore family's home in Ireland.

Much of the materials used in the renovation were shipped from England. The Ballroom ceiling features an etched glass skylight.

Mr Cudmore used the tower room as a museum for his many collections.

Since 1954, Adare has been owned by the Uniting Church.
