Photos taken on 09/06/2008. Corner of Sepulveda and Palms in West Los Angeles, California. On one corner is currently an Albertsons Sav-On Pharmacy Supermarket. Directly across the street is a Longs Drugs and Trader Joe's Market.

The Albertsons Sav-On Supermarket building has gone through a series of names and changes. Originally opened as a Department Store it has been chopped up and modified over the years. The Department Store building has gone through a series of owners including Leonard's Department Store. Finally, Fazio's Supermarkets took over the building, chopped it up, taking off about a third of the building. Fazio's ran it until Albertsons took over the chain. Immediately they re branded the store and changed its format to a warehouse style supermarket. Albertsons ran this supermarket as a Grocery Warehouse then changed its name to Max Foods. In 1999, Albertsons took over Lucky Stores, leaving them with two supermarkets across the street from one another. Albertsons Supermarkets changed the name of the Lucky Supermarket to Albertsons. They ran both Albertsons and Max Foods for about a year. Finally, they closed the Max Foods, gutted the building and rebuilt it into a new Albertsons. They closed the old Albertsons across the street. The old former Lucky building sat vacant for some time (rumor had it that the owners of the property had raised the lease/rent on Albertsons and that was the reason they moved.)

The former Lucky Albertsons building was then subdivided with Longs Drugs taking over half the site and finally Trader Joe's Market taking over the other side (despite Trader Joe's being only a couple of miles away at National and Westwood.)

All the stores remain packed with customers.

About a year ago this Longs Drug Store changed with great fanfare to operating 24 hours a day, including them putting up a giant sign to remind you about the change. Driving by the store the other day, I noticed the sign had changed. So with little fanfare and a modification of its 24 hours a day sign, the hours have dropped to 12 hours a day.

Max is quite poorly at the moment, which is why i am behind on my contacts, I have been busy looking after him. He has had a stomach upset with sickness and diarrhoea and it's been very distressing and lots of disturbed sleep for the whole family. As many of you know i am quite poorly myself and the extra stress and lack of sleep has taken it's toll on me too. Anyway things looked up a little as he started to pickup a bit and his appetite has returned but his back leg has swollen up very badly on what would be his ankle joint. It's a bout the size of my fist!!! He can't walk on it at all and has to be carried up and down stairs. The vet has no idea what's wrong, he said it could be a number of things, an infection in the joint from arthritis or from the stomach bug. max has to go back for xrays tommorrow. Max has so much to cope with already with a crumbling spine and arthritis and yet you would never know, so to see him like this is heartbreaking. Please pray or keep your fingers crossed for him that it's nothing to serious. I will keep you posted xx

This is a Kaman K-MAX helicopter. It was designed as an aerial truck for carrying external loads. Instead of a main rotor and a tail rotor it has two intermeshed main rotors. That design provides better efficiency and greater stability when hovering. The K-MAX can lift a load that weighs more than the helicopter itself. It appears that there may only be a few dozen civilian K-MAX helicopters operating around the world.

This K-MAX is operated by Rotak Helicopter Services. It was supporting construction of the expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The helicopter made multiple trips carrying metal cylinders to the Convention Center, but not back (see one of the photos I have shared).

This is Max, our dear little crossbreed who sadly had to make the one way trip to the vet recently. He was thirteen and was a great little chap - we miss him. He had been in a great deal of pain and in the end it was not such a difficult thing to do. I think as a pet owner you just know when the time is right.
