Nathan Yuen, a renewable energy contract manager with 15 years at Hawaiian Electric, was recognized for his dedication to advancing Hawaii’s next generation of skilled technology workers through his work with the nonprofit Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers Educational Foundation (HSPEEF), which is also Nathan’s choice to receive the HEICF grant. HSPEEF will use the funds for the annual Oahu and state MATHCOUNTS® competitions that promote middle school math achievement. For more than a decade, Nathan has been coordinating the numerous details involved in the MATHCOUNTS events, even using personal vacation time to travel to national planning conferences where coordinators learn ways the math enrichment program can be improved and remain relevant for the students.

CLASSROOM OF THE WEEK: The Discovery Preschool Coral Springs K-Prep class enjoyed globe-trotting without leaving the classroom! The voyage began when the students created “mini-me” paper dolls to resemble themselves, then used the likeness to “travel” around the world. The children created passports to begin their journey, and as they toured from country to country, they learned about children in several different cultures. In Brazil, soccer and hopscotch are very popular and the children speak Portuguese. The class decided to try the different activities and even learned to say “hello,” “goodbye,” and to count to ten in Portuguese. The students discovered while traveling to Jamaica, that dominoes is a popular game, so the children learned the rules of the game and how using shape and color can add to the fun. As the sightseeing continues on to India, the students created Rangoli for the Diwali festival held in the winter months in India. Rangoli are pieces of art made of colored sand. At each stop, the children explored cultures, languages, music, games and more. Finally, students discussed their experience with real-life travel and a few children are from (or have traveled to) these countries and were able to share their experiences with the class. What a wonderful excursion, Discovery Preschool Center at Coral! #LanguageWorks #MathCounts #ArtSmart #TowardaBetterWorld

When I was in 8th grade, I participated in the school MathCounts team at the urging of the algebra teacher, Mr. Acri. I was on our secondary team, so I don't think I contributed in anyway to our victory, but that's ok with me.

Mr. Acri died suddenly when I was a freshman in high school. He was a wonderful teacher.
