Tudor Square, Sheffield - £1.38 million

Client: Sheffield City Council

Landscape Architect: Sheffield City Council

BALI Award: Hard Landscaping Construction,

Cost Between £300,000 - £1.5 million 2011

Background

Tudor Square has always been at the heart of Sheffield’s vibrant city centre, providing direct access to several of the city’s key buildings. The square hosts one of the largest temperate greenhouses of the last century, The Winter Garden, adjacent to which is the Millennium Gallery, an outstanding venue for the visual arts, craft and design. Famed for being the largest theatre complex outside of London, Tudor Square also boasts Sheffield’s oldest theatre, The Lyceum, as well as The Crucible, the venue for the World Snooker Championships since 1977.

The square is also one of the city’s major pedestrian through-routes from the train and bus stations giving direct access to the shops, theatres, bars and restaurants.

Our Role

The Landscape Group were appointed by Sheffield City Council to carry out extensive hard landscaping to this city centre public realm.

Works began by carrying out major mechanical and electrical works, which included a new drainage system along with new ducting as preparation for the new lighting scheme and water features. During this stage, all service diversions were carried out by The Landscape Group as part of the scope of works.

Extensive hard landscaping was carried out by the team, consisting of a series of module paving schemes using either granite or Yorkstone. Newly formed steps were also supported by a series of bespoke feature handrails.

The Landscape Group liaised closely with all contractors throughout the project. This included contractors that supplied M&E services and in particular the stone masonry contractor that supplied the bespoke Yorkstone pebble planters forming a main feature within the square.

Challenges

Carrying out this project in a live environment presented several challenges to the team. Because of the square’s many theatres, shops and bars, delivery schedules were put in place as to cause minimal disruption to the square users.

A concrete base was constructed throughout the square to ensure that articulated vehicles also had access to the area to carry out deliveries to local businesses. As part of this management, we put in place traffic management procedures to ensure the safety of the general public. Working within an environment which had numerous existing services, we carried out these works with great care and no disruption was caused to businesses.

This photo from May 27, 1979 shows Father Thomas Koegel with sudents at the blessing of the Marian Shrine east or the rectory. The shrine was constructed by Robert Moore, a masonry contractor. A copy of a check to Donzell's Garden Center for $1,186.99 dated July 19, 1978 was for landscaping of the shrine with an invoice in that amount for stone. There also was an invoice from W. L. Tucker Supply Co. of Cuyahoga Falls dated October 5, 1978 for $173.20 for Bessmer (cement) and sand. On November 16, 1978 Fr. Koegel wrote a letter to Mazzolini Artcraft Company, 1607 E. 41st St., Cleveland, to order the "Mother and Child" statue to be executed in white marble. The particular statue was numbered 119 and cost approximately $1,000 with delivery expected by March.
