The Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a small public city park, located at 749 East 500 South in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. The park, which is filled with unusual symbolic statuary associated with Mormonism, notably to the Sphinx with Joseph Smith's head, was a labor of love designed and created by LDS businessman Thomas Battersby Child, Jr. (1888-1963) in his spare time. The park contains 12 original sculptures and over 70 stones engraved with scriptures, poems and literary texts. Gilgal Sculpture Garden is the only designated "visionary art environment" in the state of Utah.
Thomas Child, a masonry contractor and Bishop of the 10th Salt Lake LDS ward, conceived of a symbolic sculpture garden that would be a retreat from the world and a tribute to his most cherished religious and personal beliefs. He began building the garden in the back yard of his family home in 1945, when he was 57 years old, and continued to pour his time and money into the work until his death in 1963. Child named the garden Gilgal after the Biblical location where Joshua ordered the Israelites to place twelve stones as a memorial. The name "Gilgal" is sometimes translated to mean "circle of standing stones," an appropriate appellation for a sculpture garden. Gilgal is also the name of a city and a valley in The Book of Mormon, a sacred scripture in Mormonism.
Many of the sculptures and quotations found at Gilgal refer to LDS themes: the restoration of the Priesthood, the great Mormon migration west, and the many similarities Child saw between the ancient Israelites and his LDS forefathers, who sacrificed all for their faith.
Although Child was not a classically trained artist, he went to great lengths to obtain and shape the perfect stones for his beloved garden. He created a complete workshop in his yard for handling and cutting the stones, proudly stating that all the finish work for his statues was completed on the site. He also used some unconventional tools to cut the stones, including an oxyacetylene torch (usually used for welding).
The finished statues are likewise unconventional, even eccentric: a sacrificial altar, a shrine to Child's beloved wife Bertha, even a sphinx with the face of Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. Child, who shared the garden with thousands of visitors over his lifetime, knew that not everyone would appreciate his particular artistic vision. His primary concern, however, was that the garden would succeed in making people think: "You don't have to agree with me," he said. "You may think I am a nut, but I hope I have aroused your thinking and curiosity."

This Manassas Museum historic marker is on Main Street between Center Street & Church Street. The Manassas Business District is now referred to as 'Old Town Manassas'. I spent my childhood in a house my father built (8105 Signal Hill Road) from 1970-1983 about one-mile from Downtown Manassas. My father was a masonry contractor so I always appreciated the brick buildings of the historic district, and the Manassas Town Hall building which originally housed the Manassas Volunteer Fire Department on the ground level. A couple of decades later I learned the 1905 Manassas Business District Fire destroyed Downtown Manassas, and building codes were enacted requiring replacement buildings to consist of complete masonry exteriors. Manassas was a great hometown and I'm very pleased of the growth and transformation of Manassas as a business district and tourist attraction. There's not a bad restaurant, business, or attraction in the Manassas Historic District.

Built c. 1872 at no. 40 Albert Street.
"The Bell-Carlton House, located at 40 Albert Street, is situated on the east side of the street between Martin Avenue and Gordon Street, in the City of Guelph. This two-storey limestone building is reminiscent of the Greek Revival style and was designed and constructed by Matthew Bell circa 1872. The property was designated by the City of Guelph for its historic and architectural value under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act (By-law 1979-10058).
The Bell-Carlton House is significant for its association with Matthew Bell, an accomplished local stone carver and masonry contractor from Newcastle, England. Bell built this house for his family, in circa 1872, although there is a possibility that the frame and central section are of an earlier date. 40 Albert Street is one of a series of notable stone houses Bell constructed, in this area of Guelph, which illustrate his fine sculptural decoration. Bell is responsible for the construction and ornamentation of nearby 49 Albert Street, 96-98 Water Street, and 22-26 Oxford Street. 40 Albert Street, however, was the last stone home Bell would build in the neighbourhood.
The Bell-Carlton House is an example of fine craftsmanship and exquisite detail, as is illustrated in the distinguished scale and proportions of the building. The structure's façade has been enriched with fine sculptural details in stone, including the window lintels, the ornate framing of the central doorway, and the three carved stone heads. Great care has been taken in repairing the masonry and in restoring the original architectural fabric of both the interior and exterior of the Bell-Carlton House. The house received the 1977 Award of Merit from the Guelph Arts Council for the quality of the restoration work which was undertaken." - info from Historic Places.
"Guelph (/ˈɡwɛlf/ GWELF; 2021 Canadian Census population 143,740) is a city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Known as The Royal City, it is roughly 22 km (14 mi) east of Kitchener and 70 km (43 mi) west of Downtown Toronto, at the intersection of Highway 6, Highway 7 and Wellington County Road 124. It is the seat of Wellington County, but is politically independent of it.
Guelph began as a settlement in the 1820s, established by John Galt, who was in Upper Canada as the first superintendent of the Canada Company. He based the headquarters, and his home, in the community. The area—much of which became Wellington County—was part of the Halton Block, a Crown reserve for the Six Nations Iroquois. Galt is generally considered Guelph's founder.
For many years, Guelph ranked at or near the bottom of Canada's crime severity list. However, the 2017 index showed a 15% increase from 2016. It had one of the country's lowest unemployment rates throughout the Great Recession. In late 2018, the Guelph Eramosa and Puslinch entity had an unemployment rate of 2.3%, which decreased to 1.9% by January 2019, the lowest of all Canadian cities. (The national rate at the time was 5.8%.) Much of this was attributed to its numerous manufacturing facilities, including Linamar." - info from Wikipedia.
Late June to early July, 2024 I did my 4th major cycling tour. I cycled from Ottawa to London, Ontario on a convoluted route that passed by Niagara Falls. During this journey I cycled 1,876.26 km and took 21,413 photos. As with my other tours a major focus was old architecture.

The Pennsylvania Railroad Connecting Bridge is a stone arch bridge in Philadelphia that carries Amtrak Northeast Corridor and SEPTA commuter rail lines over the Schuylkill River. It is located in Fairmount Park, just upstream from the Girard Avenue Bridge.
It is also known as Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Division, Bridge No. 69. Other names are the Connecting Railway Bridge, the Connection Bridge, the New York Connecting Bridge, the New York Railroad Bridge, and the Junction Railroad Bridge.
The bridge was built 1866-67, by the Connecting Railway, a company affiliated with the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR). Its purpose was to connect the PRR's southern and northern lines, and to be part of an eventual direct PRR line from Washington, DC to New York City. Before the bridge's construction, PRR trains took a circuitous route between PRR's West Philadelphia and North Philadelphia Stations.
The bridge was probably designed by John A. Wilson, chief engineer of the Connecting Railway Company, who surveyed the route in 1863. George Brooke Roberts, a PRR engineer, took over the project after Wilson's 1864 resignation, oversaw its whole construction, and later was president of the PRR. Thomas Seabrook was the masonry contractor. It opened to traffic on 2 June 1867. The Connecting Railway became a PRR subsidiary in 1871.
The initial bridge was narrow, only 2 tracks, with an iron truss at mid-river. This was a 236-foot-3-inch-long (72 m) cast- & wrought-iron, arch-reinforced, double-intersection Whipple truss. In 1873, PRR slightly reduced the truss's span by widening the stone piers at each end. Probably at the same time, PRR removed the truss's reinforcing arch. In 1897, PRR replaced the Whipple truss with a Pratt truss of the same length.
Between 1912 and 1915, PRR more than doubled the width of the bridge to 5 tracks, and replaced the mid-river iron truss with two massive stone arches. Alexander C. Shand was the designer of what was essentially a new bridge, built to look like the original. Eyre, Shoemaker, Inc. was the masonry contractor. Reiter, Curtis & Hill built the reinforced concrete bridges over Lansdowne Drive and West Girard Avenue, and the viaduct curving around the Philadelphia Zoo.
