PARTNERS : In-house Landscape Team, National Conservation Centre - Liverpool, Johnson Wellfield Quarry, Baldock's Furniture.
Broadbent were commissioned by Sheffield City Council to work with their in-house landscape architecture team to influence the public realm design of Tudor Square, the cultural heart of Sheffield.
Sculptural planters and seating units were designed, influenced by the City’s industrial heritage and it’s remarkable natural landscape. The designs took on the natural forms of pebbles and boulders with distinctive carved markings and feature lines with tactile points of detail.
1:10 scale maquettes of the sculptures were produced and then a combination of 3D laser scanning, surfacing and digital modelling was used to scale up the maquettes and create a set of files, from which a 6-axis robot could mill the full-size sculptures in local stone by Johnson Wellfield Quarries. Broadbent also produced informal sculptural seats in the form of bronze pebbles cast in Sheffield, and bespoke seating sections for four of the large sculptural planters.

Tudor Square, Sheffield - £1.38 million
Client: Sheffield City Council
Landscape Architect: Sheffield City Council
BALI Award: Hard Landscaping Construction,
Cost Between £300,000 - £1.5 million 2011
Background
Tudor Square has always been at the heart of Sheffield’s vibrant city centre, providing direct access to several of the city’s key buildings. The square hosts one of the largest temperate greenhouses of the last century, The Winter Garden, adjacent to which is the Millennium Gallery, an outstanding venue for the visual arts, craft and design. Famed for being the largest theatre complex outside of London, Tudor Square also boasts Sheffield’s oldest theatre, The Lyceum, as well as The Crucible, the venue for the World Snooker Championships since 1977.
The square is also one of the city’s major pedestrian through-routes from the train and bus stations giving direct access to the shops, theatres, bars and restaurants.
Our Role
The Landscape Group were appointed by Sheffield City Council to carry out extensive hard landscaping to this city centre public realm.
Works began by carrying out major mechanical and electrical works, which included a new drainage system along with new ducting as preparation for the new lighting scheme and water features. During this stage, all service diversions were carried out by The Landscape Group as part of the scope of works.
Extensive hard landscaping was carried out by the team, consisting of a series of module paving schemes using either granite or Yorkstone. Newly formed steps were also supported by a series of bespoke feature handrails.
The Landscape Group liaised closely with all contractors throughout the project. This included contractors that supplied M&E services and in particular the stone masonry contractor that supplied the bespoke Yorkstone pebble planters forming a main feature within the square.
Challenges
Carrying out this project in a live environment presented several challenges to the team. Because of the square’s many theatres, shops and bars, delivery schedules were put in place as to cause minimal disruption to the square users.
A concrete base was constructed throughout the square to ensure that articulated vehicles also had access to the area to carry out deliveries to local businesses. As part of this management, we put in place traffic management procedures to ensure the safety of the general public. Working within an environment which had numerous existing services, we carried out these works with great care and no disruption was caused to businesses.
Front Door Stoop Designers

Located in Kings Park Long Island,a blue collar coastal suburb of Smithtown this Split level Ranch or Splanch had many obstacles to overcome when trying to redesign the front entrance. The customer came to Gappsi for our design and expertise in the masonry and landscape forum. With keeping cost down and designing a multi-use entranceway from three sides of this slender sized property was the biggest challenge we had to undertake. After a few hours of designing and redesigning the customer and the team here at Gappsi design center nailed down the perfect combination to suit this homes updating project. While at the showroom the customer also had the chance to glance and browse Gappsi Signature Natural Stone selection and fell in love with our Amagansett granite paver. With design and material chosen, Gappsi’s masonry division expertly built and installed what you see here. A full two car driveway in a 90 degree herringbone pattern with soldier course border inlaid with a 45 degree herringbone walkway adds contrast and designates which area is which while still using the same medium of stone is the largest revitalization portion of this job. The main platform entrance from the driveway has two sets of steps on either side to access the main entrance of the home from either the walkway on the right as well as from the driveway. Leading up towards the main door another platform was built to meet the homes entrance, notice the absence of rails. To soften the large structure two columns and an eighteen inch planter wall with creeping ground covers and accent annuals as well as two side planter beds were added into the design bringing life and color to the project. These side planters have a dual purpose, by designing these planters the homeowner did not need to install hand rails due to height issues, which in turn saved them money. Using hanover wall system to compliment and add a vertical contrast to the natural stone paver the project blends two different materials seamlessly together with the existing home as the canvas. Curb appeal was achieve and the value of this home has been increase bringing joy not only to the current homeowners but to future homeowners as well with this timeless design and material choice.

This is just downwind from the site, along Grand Canhyon Dr. This shows that much dust is being lofted and spread downwind. This visible dust is just the tip of the iceberg.
kabir is from bangladesh. a lot of bangladeshi's are in the masonry business in brooklyn. i always mention louis kahn to the bangladeshis i meet, and although none of them (yet) have recognized the great architect's name, they all LOVE his work at the dhaka. archnet.org/library/images/thumbnails.tcl?location_id=1525

Urban decay
Judging from its location in town this could have been either a house or an office; the venetian blinds are no help in determining which it was. In the late 1940s I knew a masonry contractor who put casement windows just like these in the homes he built. So this little building could date from then, too.
The building tiles used for the walls are usually plastered but when money runs out the plaster is left off.

Two integral colored concrete masonry units were selected for the Ranken Technical School in St. Louis, MO, for aesthetics and economics. The units selected helped break down the scale of the wall. The red units have the appearance of large, brick units, while the tan color units resemble stone. The inside face of block was left exposed to produce a finished wall, reducing the cost of finishing the interior wall, along with achieving a durable structural for the function of the space.
