The Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a small public city park, located at 749 East 500 South in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. The park, which is filled with unusual symbolic statuary associated with Mormonism, notably to the Sphinx with Joseph Smith's head, was a labor of love designed and created by LDS businessman Thomas Battersby Child, Jr. (1888-1963) in his spare time. The park contains 12 original sculptures and over 70 stones engraved with scriptures, poems and literary texts. Gilgal Sculpture Garden is the only designated "visionary art environment" in the state of Utah.
Thomas Child, a masonry contractor and Bishop of the 10th Salt Lake LDS ward, conceived of a symbolic sculpture garden that would be a retreat from the world and a tribute to his most cherished religious and personal beliefs. He began building the garden in the back yard of his family home in 1945, when he was 57 years old, and continued to pour his time and money into the work until his death in 1963. Child named the garden Gilgal after the Biblical location where Joshua ordered the Israelites to place twelve stones as a memorial. The name "Gilgal" is sometimes translated to mean "circle of standing stones," an appropriate appellation for a sculpture garden. Gilgal is also the name of a city and a valley in The Book of Mormon, a sacred scripture in Mormonism.
Many of the sculptures and quotations found at Gilgal refer to LDS themes: the restoration of the Priesthood, the great Mormon migration west, and the many similarities Child saw between the ancient Israelites and his LDS forefathers, who sacrificed all for their faith.
Although Child was not a classically trained artist, he went to great lengths to obtain and shape the perfect stones for his beloved garden. He created a complete workshop in his yard for handling and cutting the stones, proudly stating that all the finish work for his statues was completed on the site. He also used some unconventional tools to cut the stones, including an oxyacetylene torch (usually used for welding).
The finished statues are likewise unconventional, even eccentric: a sacrificial altar, a shrine to Child's beloved wife Bertha, even a sphinx with the face of Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. Child, who shared the garden with thousands of visitors over his lifetime, knew that not everyone would appreciate his particular artistic vision. His primary concern, however, was that the garden would succeed in making people think: "You don't have to agree with me," he said. "You may think I am a nut, but I hope I have aroused your thinking and curiosity."

Tudor Square, sculptured seating and planters.
TUDOR SQUARE
NAME : Tudor Square
DATE : 2008 - 2010
CLIENT : Sheffield City Council
LOCATION : Sheffield
PARTNERS : In-house Landscape Team, National Conservation Centre - Liverpool, Johnson Wellfield Quarry, Baldock's Furniture.
Broadbent were commissioned by Sheffield City Council to work with their in-house landscape architecture team to influence the public realm design of Tudor Square, the cultural heart of Sheffield.
Sculptural planters and seating units were designed, influenced by the City’s industrial heritage and it’s remarkable natural landscape. The designs took on the natural forms of pebbles and boulders with distinctive carved markings and feature lines with tactile points of detail.
1:10 scale maquettes of the sculptures were produced and then a combination of 3D laser scanning, surfacing and digital modelling was used to scale up the maquettes and create a set of files, from which a 6-axis robot could mill the full-size sculptures in local stone by Johnson Wellfield Quarries. Broadbent also produced informal sculptural seats in the form of bronze pebbles cast in Sheffield, and bespoke seating sections for four of the large sculptural planters.

Tudor Square, Sheffield - £1.38 million
Client: Sheffield City Council
Landscape Architect: Sheffield City Council
BALI Award: Hard Landscaping Construction,
Cost Between £300,000 - £1.5 million 2011
Background
Tudor Square has always been at the heart of Sheffield’s vibrant city centre, providing direct access to several of the city’s key buildings. The square hosts one of the largest temperate greenhouses of the last century, The Winter Garden, adjacent to which is the Millennium Gallery, an outstanding venue for the visual arts, craft and design. Famed for being the largest theatre complex outside of London, Tudor Square also boasts Sheffield’s oldest theatre, The Lyceum, as well as The Crucible, the venue for the World Snooker Championships since 1977.
The square is also one of the city’s major pedestrian through-routes from the train and bus stations giving direct access to the shops, theatres, bars and restaurants.
Our Role
The Landscape Group were appointed by Sheffield City Council to carry out extensive hard landscaping to this city centre public realm.
Works began by carrying out major mechanical and electrical works, which included a new drainage system along with new ducting as preparation for the new lighting scheme and water features. During this stage, all service diversions were carried out by The Landscape Group as part of the scope of works.
Extensive hard landscaping was carried out by the team, consisting of a series of module paving schemes using either granite or Yorkstone. Newly formed steps were also supported by a series of bespoke feature handrails.
The Landscape Group liaised closely with all contractors throughout the project. This included contractors that supplied M&E services and in particular the stone masonry contractor that supplied the bespoke Yorkstone pebble planters forming a main feature within the square.
Challenges
Carrying out this project in a live environment presented several challenges to the team. Because of the square’s many theatres, shops and bars, delivery schedules were put in place as to cause minimal disruption to the square users.
A concrete base was constructed throughout the square to ensure that articulated vehicles also had access to the area to carry out deliveries to local businesses. As part of this management, we put in place traffic management procedures to ensure the safety of the general public. Working within an environment which had numerous existing services, we carried out these works with great care and no disruption was caused to businesses.

Sheffield Central Library
Work on the building began in 1929, to a design by W. G. Davies. Built in a broadly art-deco style, it was opened in 1934 by the Duchess of York. Conceived as part of a plan by Patrick Abercrombie to create a civic square, it was the only element ever built and so faces onto a narrow street. In 1991, Tudor Square was constructed to one side of the library.
The building, supported by a steel frame, is faced with Portland stone and has some decorative mouldings by Alfred and William Tory.
The Graves Art Gallery was founded around a bequest from J. G. Graves and hosts a range of temporary and permanent exhibitions.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield_Central_Library
The Tory brothers were responsible for the figure of Knowledge on Sheffield’s Central Library (1934) at the corner of Tudor Square and Surrey street. Seated on the world, this figure holds in his hands the ankh (the Egyptian symbol of life) representing good and the asp representing evil and is attended on either side by spirit messengers holding aloft flaming torches. The 12 cartouches around the main entrance which represent Literature, Music, Drama, Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, Mathematics, Chemistry and Astronomy were also carved by them.

The town of Borrika was gazetted 2 April 1914. A site on the corner of the main road and third street was gazetted an Institute site 11 June 1914.
The community proceeded with the erection of a corrugated iron building, measuring 30ft x 15ft on the site. The hall was built by local settlers, including four who were carpenters.
The hall was used for a variety of community and social functions, including church services, dances, and as a school that opened in 1915.
By 1924 a larger hall was required. The original hall was moved back from the main road about 60 feet and a new hall erected in front of it.
Foundation stone of new hall was laid 25 March 1925. [According to newspaper reports the hall was opened on the same day-see account in the following text.] The hall was built of locally quarried stone. Masonry contractor was Mr Ellis, while local farmers Charlie and Jack Wardley erected the roof.
The old hall continued to be used as a school until 1926. The new hall provided the usual community services. A cement brick kitchen was added to the rear of the old building after the Second World War. [Ref: Heritage of the Murray Mallee]
The first Borrika Hall opened October 1914.
The opening ceremony in connection with the new institute was performed by Mrs H S Green. Mr Mell, in introducing Mrs Green, said it afforded him great pleasure to see such a building here, and he sincerely hoped it would not be long before a library was opened. [Chronicle (Adelaide) 14 Nov 1914]
A successful sports meeting was held on October 12 to raise funds to pay the debt on the Borrika hall. The proceeds were £67/15/4. [Ref: Advertiser (Adelaide) 5-11-1921]
A concert in aid of the school funds was held in the hall on September 6, and an excellent programme was carried out by the school children.
The hall was tastefully decorated, and much credit is due to Miss D Watt, head teacher, and Miss E Tonkin who assisted as accompanist.
A sale of flowers and sweets was followed by a supper and dance. Proceeds were £9/7/2d. [Ref: Chronicle (Adelaide) 23-9-1922]
SCHOOL FOR BORRIKA
A deputation from residents of Borrika on the Paringa railway line, (Karoonda), waited upon the Minister of Education (Mr L L Hill) on Tuesday, requesting the erection of a stone school building in their district. The deputation was introduced by Mr H McMillan MP.
Mr A Hocking said that there were thirty one children on the roll at Borrika, and the present iron building was very trying in summer, and cold in winter.
The Minister, replying, said in 1922 the Director had rejected the proposal as the average attendance only 18. Parliament, however, would be asked to vote a larger amount for country schools next session. He was going into the whole matter shortly with the Director before submitting proposals to Cabinet. A NEW INSTITUTE
0n March 25 the new Borrika Institute was opened by Mr F M McMillan MP. The building, which is of the most modern architecture, is well lighted.
The chairman (Mr H S Green) presented Mr McMillan with an inscribed silver plated trowel, with which to lay the foundation stone. After the stone was laid Mr McMillan declared the hall open.
An appeal on behalf of the trustees was well responded to, £77 being placed on the stone. Sports were held afterwards.
A concert was held in the hall in the evening. Items were contributed by the Karoonda orchestra. A dance followed. Mr A J Amos was MC and the music was provided by the Karoonda orchestra. The takings for the day amounted to approximately £180. There was a record attendance of about 300 during the afternoon and evening. A benefit social was recently held in the Borrika Institute to raise funds for Mr Harry Woolcock who was seriously injured in the accident on the night of October 21. He was returning to Lowalde [sic] from Wynarka on a motor tricycle, when he was run down by a special rail motor that was also returning in reverse gear from the final match of the Murray Lands Football Association, which was played at Wynarka. Mr Woolcock was ganger at Lowalde, and had charge of the relaying of the Lowalde station yard. The total takings of the evening amounted to £45, with about £5 expenses. A large number attended to help make the evening a success, some coming from Karoonda, Nunkeri, Lowalde, and Sandalwood. [Ref: Observer (Adelaide) 12-12-1925]

On Saturday evening a successful strawberry fete and ball were held in the institute hall, in aid of the piano fund. Mr J Wardley was MC. [Ref: Observer (Adelaide) 19-12-1925]
The Borrika school [state school] came into existence without any opening ceremony, but in spite of that has made good headway. The building is quite a good one and the thirty children attending are taught well by Mr S Alexander.
At the wheat competitions social last week, Messrs Maycock, V V Brown, and E H Huxtable handed back their prize money to various deserving district funds. [Ref: Murray Pioneer and Australian River Record (Renmark) 5-8-1927]
With the state school being opened students were no longer taught at the Borrika Institute.
Borrika Church News
Violet Day was celebrated here last Sunday. Mrs J H Gray, of Lowaldie, brought along a box of beautiful violets, with which the building was decorated.
Before the service started, Alison Gray handed around to the congregation a number of small cards, on which violets were painted (the work of the Sunday school). Rev F Timberlake conducted the service, and delivered an inspiring address to a large congregation. We wish to convey our thanks to Mr and Mrs J Gray, of Adelaide, who so kindly collected and sent up the violets. [Ref: Australian Christian Commonwealth (SA) 19-8-1927]
May 7 - On Saturday evening a social evening was held in the Borrika Institute for the presentation of the Murray Lands Cricket Association Shield to the Borrika cricket team, which has won it three seasons out of the four in which it has been competed for.

He read come verse on "How Borrika Won the Shield." Mr J B Tonkin also mentioned the excellent fielding of the sides in the final match.
Dr Hussey presented the shield to the captain of Borrika team (A R Dohnt), who thanked the speakers for their congratulations. Dr Hussey also presented to Mr Dohnt “the ashes” and said he would like to see these competed for from year to year.

This is close to where the children are playing. No workers are wearing masks. OSHA take note. The intermittent dust is probably being caused by mixing cement, or by cutting cement/bricks with a saw.
Built in 1871 at no. 50 Quebec Street.
"Chalmers Church was constituted in 1868 by a group of members who had broken away from the Knox congregation, now located farther along this street. They gathered in the County Court House until this building could be constructed in 1871. It was designed by Toronto architects Gundy and Langley, with Thomas Dobbie as the masonry contractor and Walter Grierson the stone cutter. Much of the facade was constructed of matched grey granite rather than the local limestone so widely used elsewhere in the community. A new Christian Education wing was added to the west side in 1957, and extensive alternations were made to the interior in 1966. A series of stained glass windows by Yvonne Williams Studios of Toronto was installed between 1961 and 1968." - info from the City of Guelph.
"Guelph (/ˈɡwɛlf/ GWELF; 2021 Canadian Census population 143,740) is a city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Known as The Royal City, it is roughly 22 km (14 mi) east of Kitchener and 70 km (43 mi) west of Downtown Toronto, at the intersection of Highway 6, Highway 7 and Wellington County Road 124. It is the seat of Wellington County, but is politically independent of it.
Guelph began as a settlement in the 1820s, established by John Galt, who was in Upper Canada as the first superintendent of the Canada Company. He based the headquarters, and his home, in the community. The area—much of which became Wellington County—was part of the Halton Block, a Crown reserve for the Six Nations Iroquois. Galt is generally considered Guelph's founder.
For many years, Guelph ranked at or near the bottom of Canada's crime severity list. However, the 2017 index showed a 15% increase from 2016. It had one of the country's lowest unemployment rates throughout the Great Recession. In late 2018, the Guelph Eramosa and Puslinch entity had an unemployment rate of 2.3%, which decreased to 1.9% by January 2019, the lowest of all Canadian cities. (The national rate at the time was 5.8%.) Much of this was attributed to its numerous manufacturing facilities, including Linamar." - info from Wikipedia.
Late June to early July, 2024 I did my 4th major cycling tour. I cycled from Ottawa to London, Ontario on a convoluted route that passed by Niagara Falls. During this journey I cycled 1,876.26 km and took 21,413 photos. As with my other tours a major focus was old architecture.

Head of Steam Pub
103-107 Norfolk street, Sheffield
Sheffield & Hallamshire Savings Bank (former), 1858.
By Flockton & Son.
Grade II listed.
Head of Steam Public House (formerly the Old Monk).
Large, modern pub with a central bar, and plenty of seating. Serves real ales and a variety of lagers as well as cider, plus a large bottled range. Food is served most of the day.
This is just downwind from the site, along Grand Canhyon Dr. This shows that much dust is being lofted and spread downwind. This visible dust is just the tip of the iceberg. Note children's bicycle tracks and footprints, on way to soccer field and high school.

Salmon colored 8x8 and white 4x4 paving stones were used for this pool patio. Geometric shaped pool and classical brick accent wall with three spill over edges adds therapeutic sound of cascading water and provides this backyard an English bath house feel on Long Island NY.. Strategically placed landscape shrubs and flowering trees help soften and brighten the entire area and brings good balance to a picturesque addition for any home. The swimming pool has produced in stairs within the shallow end giving a streamline finished look without the need of the obstruction of fiberglass stair bump out and features a diving board. With simply having access to three sides in this watering hole Paving Stone Select incorporated a twelve foot wide patio close to the stairs for individuals to congregate and luxuriate in not just the swimming pool though the activities associated, for example sunbathing on loungers or experiencing a light lunch. The be noticeable feature for this unique design is definitely the two tone paving stone used. They're not only two different colors these are two various sizes. The first is an eight by eight salmon colored paving stone which is alternated which has a four by four white paving stone. The young blockhead was struck down at home on his own driveway. He leaves behind a beautiful paving block and three small bricks.
The Building Inspector has said: "While an unknown paving crew was indeed seen in the neighborhood, a local masonry contractor is still among the chief suspects."
"William Henry is my father. He entered the military and fought in the Korean War. My father to the best of my knowledge was a masonry contractor responsible for building bridges, roads, living quarters and mess facilities. He does not talk about his war experience. I am sure that was a difficult time for him. I am proud of my father for returning to his neighborhood and carrying on the all of the values, integrity, honor, loyalty, selfless service, duty and respect taught to him during his tour in Korea."

Photographed in 1975. The stone masons was located between the A4 and Beech Road. The sign outside reads 'Maurice V Sheppard LTD, Masonry Contractors, Monument Sculptors, Stone Cleaning' and provides the telephone number for a head office in Bristol. The small boy cutting a stone block is Peter Woodgate, who lived over the road in Ivy Cottage and used to frequent the stone masons yard. The stone masons has been gone for some years, and a detached house was built on the site during the mid 90's.
