The Bubbler in collaboration with the Neighborhood Intervention Program (NIP) and Prof. Faisal Abdu ́Allah present an art exhibition by Madison youth. "Mask Off!" brings together UW-Madison staff, The Bubbler, and teenagers of greater Madison to celebrate identity, alter egos, and human complexity. Based on 15 weeks of workshops with diverse artists, the project emphasizes the multi-vocality and diversity of the youth who are often at the forefront of the nation’s friction. The art, made by the teens, tells stories about the multiple facets of self-imagination versus determination by society. The alter egos that the teens developed reflect upon their adaptation to challenges encountered in their every day lives.

This mask makes me think of Phantom of the Opera only in a true, old world, primitive people's way. From Revend Zombie's House of Voodoo in New Orleans, pre hurricane Katrina.

Black mask, my first attempt at a mask ala Joel Cooper. It is too bad he does not post instructions, because this mask really did not turn out the way I wanted. Oh well, still kind of neat.

Another Day of the Dead mask in Chandler, Arizona.

These masks are mainly used during 'chhau dance' , but may also be used for decorative purpose on the wall. During our tour to Baghmundi, Purulia, we found some small shops by the side of street who were actually crafting and selling those masks.

This mask was a big hit in last year's soggy Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, or at least it seemed that way to me. But the paper mache was not up to the heavy rain. Below you can see what it looked like after the parade. Above, I've reshaped and patched the mask and sewn heavy wire onto the inside of the mask with thin iron wire.

Masking the chrome head tube on this bi-laminate frame. It takes a good while to get to this point and it’s only satisfying when it’s coming off. Someday, for your listening pleasure, I will record the sound of the tip breaking off of an X-Acto No. 11 blade. I go through as many as 5 just on the head tube (depending on the lug design). #xactoblades #3m #greentape #masking #bilaminate #headtube #chapmancycles

The Adventures of Ram Ram

OK, so I got a bit carried away at the Artisan Market, and ended up haggling with the artist over a wall mask and getting a deal I could not refuse (although David would disagree). This is how Ram Ram (a name I gave this creature) came to be adopted by the Howards.

It wasn't until we got him back to the room that I realised quite how big he was, and that he wasn't going to fit inside our checked in luggage. Oops.

The guys on the hotel reception kindly let us have some newspapers and cellotape to wrap him in, but it soon became apparent that he needed more, especially if he was to travel in the cargo hold of the plane.

Jackie, from our local agent Voyages Lumiere, came to the rescue. Less than an hour after texting her and asking how I could get hold of some bubble wrap, a driver turned up at our hotel with a huge roll of it. What a star she is!

Duly wrapped, we approached the check in staff at Delta Airlines in Port au Prince, who insisted he had to be checked in, but it was going to cost us $108. Not at all happy about that, I not-so-gently persuaded them to allow him to travel as carry-on, and we continued through the security into the departure lounge without much further fuss.

On the flight from Port au Prince, Haiti, to Atlanta, US, Ram Ram travelled in the cupboard allocated for coats in First Class. The staff loved him.

The next hurdle – and the biggest one as far as we were concerned – was US customs. After going through the X-ray, the security officer asked what it was, and proceeded to undress the carefully wrapped Ram Ram. Satisfied that he posed no risk to Homeland security, Ram Ram was yet again re-dressed and even received some additional accessories in the form of an approved 'INSPECTED' tape around his nose (horn).

As Hong Kong Coronavirus/COVID-19 surpasses fifty cases in the city so most people don a face mask to protect themselves from the virus. Although there is some debate over the effectiveness of the masks to protect against infection and a citywide shortage of masks still the face covering has become started attire for most people in the city.

These 9 year olds were looking at sight and vision so we decided to create our own crazy glasses and masks. They were all so individual, just like the kids!

Here you can see the rear fastenings unbuckled. The large pad and straps make this a very comfy and secure system - pity the front of the mask isn't as comfortable to wear!
