“Mystery Mask” is currently on view in gallery 261a at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA). This minimal installation features a single object: a highly unusual 3 ½ foot tall mask from Nigeria about which very little is known. The mask is carved from wood, colored with pigments, and the mustache is composed of fiber and possibly hair. It dates to the second half of the twentieth century. The mask’s owner acquired it in Sokoto, a city in northwestern Nigeria. He was told it had been used in fertility ceremonies by the Tiv people, who live in the central-southern part of the country. The only known image
of a very similar mask was published in a catalogue on southeastern Nigerian art.
The curator is inviting comments about its origin and function from scholars worldwide
through an African scholars Internet forum.
As comments come in, they will be added to the didactics in the MIA gallery and posted on the MIA blog, The Bubbler, creating a participatory exhibition. The exhibition runs through December 18.

As Hong Kong Coronavirus/COVID-19 surpasses fifty cases in the city so most people don a face mask to protect themselves from the virus. Although there is some debate over the effectiveness of the masks to protect against infection and a citywide shortage of masks still the face covering has become started attire for most people in the city.

radiation mask - This mask was used for my radiation treatments. The mask material is heated in hot water to soften it, then pressed over your body to form the mask. The markings on the mask are to make sure the alignment is correct each day. Nothing like being bolted to a table for a few Grays of radiation each morning!

i went to a rager of a house show up in boston (or perhaps allston?) this past weekend. they had this collage of cheap dollar store style masks stapled together right inside the door.
