Markings for the European Union — Blue lighting from below.

I read somewhere that New York gangs hang trainers over lampposts to mark their 'dealing territory' - and the make of the trainers indicates which gang 'owns the area'... Therefore it surprised me then when I saw a pair of Reebok Classics hanging from the lamppost on a street in my neighbourhood. Who knows what goes down on the mean streets of Norwich!

Monochrome version of a carpenter at work. An earlier shot had some adverse comments because it was too contrasty. I have attempted to rectify that in this version.

The 3rd round of the Mullingar Road League 2012. This 5km race was held on 16th May 2012 at 8PM. There was a huge attendance at the race. The weather was a little better than previous nights with a soft shower of rain on an otherwise warm evening. This was race number 3 in the series effectively marking half way in the 5 race series.

The Mullingar Harriers athletic club organise this league of races every May for the promotion of participation in sport and physical activity and to honour the memory of Pat Finnerty, a former Chairman of the Harriers who gave enormous service to Mullingar Harriers and athletics over many years. The Road League caters for runners, joggers and walkers of all ages and abilities.

The Road League is run on traffic free roads and trails in Belvedere House and Gardens and Park just outside Mullingar on the Tullamore Road. Belvedere House is situated in 160 acres of lakeside parkland on the shores of Lough Ennell.

This is a collection of photographs taken by Peter Mooney and family. Unfortunately poor lighting conditions and some camera issues mean that we have a little less photographs than normal.

Mariposa Pavoreal blanco / White Peacock Butterfly

* Distribución: El pavo real blanco es una especie residente en la República Dominicana y se encuentra en todas las Antillas, América Central, México y el sureste de los Estados Unidos hasta Argentina.

* Entorno preferido: Prospera en áreas abiertas y con maleza, como los bordes de estanques, arroyos, zanjas poco profundas, campos y parques urbanos.

* Dieta: Las mariposas adultas se alimentan del néctar de varias flores, incluyendo las del género Bacopa y Ruellia. Las orugas se alimentan de plantas hospedadoras de estos géneros.

* Territorialidad: Los machos son notablemente territoriales, a menudo se posan en un área específica que contiene plantas hospedadoras y la defienden agresivamente de otros insectos y machos.

++++=ENGLISH=++++

The White Peacock butterfly (Anartia jatrophae) is a small-to-medium sized butterfly commonly found throughout the Dominican Republic and the wider Caribbean region. It is well-known for its graceful, erratic flight pattern and its preference for sunny, open, and moist habitats.

Appearance

* Coloration: The upperside of the wings is primarily white or cream-colored with light brown or tan markings and orange borders.

* Markings: It has distinguishing "peacock" eyespots: one round black spot on each forewing and two smaller black spots on each hindwing.

* Size: The wingspan typically ranges from 5.1 to 7 cm (2 to 2.75 inches).

* Seasonal Variation: The appearance can vary with the seasons; butterflies in the dry season (winter) tend to be larger and paler, while those in the wet season (summer) are smaller and darker.

Habitat and Behavior

* Range: The White Peacock is a resident species in the Dominican Republic and is found throughout the West Indies, Central America, Mexico, and the southeastern United States down to Argentina.

* Preferred Environment: It thrives in open, weedy areas, such as the edges of ponds, streams, shallow ditches, fields, and urban parks.

* Diet: Adult butterflies feed on nectar from various flowers, including shepherd's needle and frogfruit. The caterpillars feed on host plants in the Bacopa and Ruellia genera.

* Territoriality: Males are notably territorial, often perching in a specific area containing host plants and aggressively defending it from other insects and males.

The Anartia jatrophae (White Peacock butterfly) belongs to the family Nymphalidae. This family is commonly known as the brush-footed butterflies.
