Laranja is scent marking the trash can on Tamarin Run as the GLTs are making their merry way back from Olmstead Walk. This was the first time the GLTs roamed down to and back from Olmstead using the fence in Beaver Valley.

 

Laranja's hubby, Eduardo, had previously scent marked probably every display sign on his trek down to Olmstead Walk.

 

Scent marking is one of the ways that golden lion tamarins (and many other animals) mark (claim) their territory.

 

Laranja is the mom of the free-ranging golden lion tamarins in Beaver Valley at the National Zoological Park in Washington, DC.

I read somewhere that New York gangs hang trainers over lampposts to mark their 'dealing territory' - and the make of the trainers indicates which gang 'owns the area'... Therefore it surprised me then when I saw a pair of Reebok Classics hanging from the lamppost on a street in my neighbourhood. Who knows what goes down on the mean streets of Norwich!

The Map is unusual in that its two annual broods look very different. The summer brood are black with white markings, this is the spring brood ! (Sorry for the bad photo, I had never seen or heard of such a butterfly before)
