The house on the left was the home of the celebrated Nottingham architect Watson Fothergill. It was built by him in 1872 but demolished in 1968. The house on the right stands in its place, part of the Fothergill Court complex. It's hard to know what to say really - progress I suspect.
Later on in the afternoon, an extra bus slots into the 46 and 47 seeing the bus that's been on 47 all day move onto the 46 for a round trip. Handy for me....
330 is seen on Plains Road in Mapperley with a 46 to Nottingham.
Old Cemetery, Ipswich, Suffolk
Sacred to the memory of Samuel Mapperley, PPGM of Ipswich District IOOFMU, who died March 19th 1899 aged 46 years.
This stone was erected by the Brethren of the Loyal Golden Reapers Lodge no 5940 of which he was for 13 years Permanent Secretary.
Also of Rosa Ellen beloved wife of the above, who died March 24th 1934, aged 75 years.
Sauel Mapperley was a telegraph clerk. He kept the busy post office on the Ipswich dockside at 51 Key Street, where the family lived. The IOOFMU is the Independent Order Of Foresters, Manchester Union. They are mentioned on a dozen or so headstones in the old cemetery.
Foster and Pearson Ltd., Beeston, Notts. 1926 catalogue. Conservatory, Malvern House, Mapperley Road, Nottingham. The house is still there but this magnificent conservatory was demolished.

During the celebration event for Nottingham Forest in the Old Market Square, some bus routes were diverted in the city centre to serve Victoria Centre as temporary terminating stops.

Working route 51 to Mapperley is Nottingham 626 (MNU 626P), a Leyland Atlantean with East Lancs bodywork.

More from the past, all taken in 1962. CRR91 started life with West Bridgford, as their no. 8 in 1936. An AEC Regent with Park Royal body, it must have been very near the end of its life when I photographed it 27 years later. Having dug into it, I now wish that I'd paid more attention to GHJ838, as that was apparently a 1953 Plaxton body on an ex-Salford 1935 TD4 Leyland Titan chassis (originally RJ3540, Salford 59). Despite the age of the chassis, Roys of Mapperley clearly had faith in it, as it sports a GB plate.
The Majestic opened on 10 June 1929 with seating for 700 people. The architect was A.J Thraves. It wasn't an easy building to erect as the ground behind the building falls away at a steep incline, with the foundations lying well below the level of the road. The cinema closed on 30 November 1957 and is currently a museum. (See my Nottingham Cinemas Album for a picture of how it looked in 1980)
We returned home from a trip to Nottingham, this afternoon, via Plains Road, Mapperley. I had thought that the Christmas lights would have been taken down over the weekend and that I had missed them for 2019 bot, no, they're still there and looking as splendid as ever! Just a few quick phone-cam shots, between showers. Next stop - Spring!

The innovative train sculpture at the entrance to the old railway bridge is beloved of local children and has given the Council owned Woodthorpe Park, the ‘Train Park’.
The shell of an old steam train has been bricked into the old railway tunnel at Woodthorpe Park the only remains of the old Nottingham Suburban Railway. Opened in 1889 the railway line was created as part of the NSR, and included Sherwood Station (now demolished and the site occupied by a block of flats). The last train ran in 1951 following the decline of NSR, now the only remains of the line are in the tunnels throughout the park. The northern-most tunnel has the train sculpture at its entrance to interpret the short-lived past of this line.

I'm just wondering if the Prime DVD rental store will still be there when I return to England in Aug 2008
Due to roadworks on Ramsey Drive, NCT were diverting their 56/7/X via Gedling Road, Mapperley Plains & Coppice Road.
More from the past, all 1962. Ex-Leicester all-Leyland PD1 236, by 1962 Barton 832, heads east along Plains Road, Mapperley on its journey to Calverton. The picture was taken directly outside the Roys Motors yard in the next shot.
How often do you curse when a car interrupts while you're trying to take a photograph, but all these years later, a very shiny new-looking Land Rover adds to the scene.

Rush hour Mapperley top. It's a shame really, the level of bus service into the city has been declining, why, well you can see why, when i travelled along this route at this time of day in the late 70's early 80's it was NEVER like this, a few waiting to go through at Porchester Rd but journey was still quick. I just ask all these drivers sitting in traffic are you doing the journey any quicker now then when you abandoned the bus... I bet the answer is NO!!!

The sunset never really got going but the reflection was very nice. Mapperley Reservoir, Derbyshire.
This Grade II listed building was originally built c.1850 then extended and remodelled by Watson Fothergill in 1886.
It has stood empty for quite a while but it looks like it has now been bought and work is being done on it.

Nottingham City Transport services 46 (Nottingham-Woodborough/Lambley clockwise circular) and 47 (the same anti-clockwise) will be revised to form service 61 from 1 September. The new service will operate as an out and back as opposed to circular, running to Woodborough via Lambley as per the 47 and then on to Calverton which is currently served by Trent Barton and Notts Council but not NCT. Service 45 will be renumbered 60 at the same time with the thought process seemingly being to free up service numbers for future expansion.
E200MMC YX69NRV (309) is seen at Mapperley Plains with the 06:50 46 short from Mapperley to Woodborough. This section of the route will become unserved as part of the changes due to buses serving Lambley in both directions. The branded blue E200s which previously operated these routes have left the fleet and silver 'spares' are the usual allocation at present.

When NCT's GO2 brand launched in 2001, services 44/45 were two circulars that looped around Netherfield, Gedling and Mapperley. In the intervening 23 years, the routes were split; 44 covering Netherfield and 45 covering Mapperley and both meeting at Gedling, and more recent changes have seen the 45 renumbered as 60.
Showing its 'new' route number, 435 passes older sister 412 at the bottom of King Street near the Brian Clough statue on 6th December 2024.

This was taken last night (23 Jun 09) I was just driving into Magdala Road, Mapperley Park, Nottingham and was confronted with this sight! I just had to stop and shoot!
When I did this I thought of "Adrian's Art" !!
