Maple City is an unincorporated village in Leelanau County, Michigan. It was first established around 1866 and known as Peg Town.
I originally scanned a fallen red maple leaf from my front lawn, and then worked some PhotoShop magic with that image.
Recently cut down, this maple tree shows the scars of life. The marks in the trunk were made some 40 years ago when it was tapped for maple syrup. By pure chance it was cut at the right spot to reveal these tap marks. The center of the tree had degraded and cracks in the trunk made it necessary to cut it down. The diameter of the tree trunk was about 2 feet.
