Portland Works, Randall Street, Sheffield, 1877.

By JH Jenkinson.

For RF Mosley, cutlery manufacturer.

Grade ll* listed.

Portland Works is an extremely good and complete example of a large purpose-built integrated cutlery works dating largely from a single 1870s building phase with a well designed layout for this building type. The works was mechanised, with evidence for a steam engine, but there are also unpowered workshop ranges, illustrating the fact that Sheffield based its reputation on the supremacy of traditional methods. This type of complex is very distinctive to the industrial identity of Sheffield, which, at this time was known throughout the world as a centre of excellence in the manufacturing and processing of steel. Portland Works is an important survival which demonstrates the layout of such a complex, highlights the limited use of power in the cutlery manufacturing process, and retains both hand forges and steam grinding rooms, extremely rare survivals of building types related to specific processes, with probably fewer than five sites in Sheffield now retaining evidence of both. These characteristics, together with the degree of completeness of survival make this site of particular importance and justify its upgrading to Grade II*.

A fragment of a decorated Roman Glass bracelet dating to c.AD 50-200. The fragment has a D-shaped section and is of Kilbride-Jones type 2Ci. The core and body of the fragment is made from a translucent light blue colour glass with the addition of three cords of decoration within the outer edge of the bracelet. The centre cord is of a golden brown, amber like colour and at either side of the centre cord is a cord of opaque white and cobalt blue. The cord decoration penetrates c.0.5mm into the lighter blue glass.

Within the glass are tiny black fragments, which are diagnostic features associated with the winding and stretching technique used during the manufacturing processes and demonstrate the use of metal tools to help form the bangle. The black fragments are iron scales embedded onto the inner surface from its contact with iron rods. Internal folds seen in the cross-sections, indicate that the glass was wound around the rod during the first stage of production.

Length: 23mm, Width;10mm, Depth; 8mm, Weight: 4.5g

Estimated external diameter of the complete bracelet: 80mm; estimated internal diameter of 60mm.

This fragment has been recorded with Dr Tatiana Ivleva who notes that the 'fragment belongs to relatively common type 2Ci. What makes your piece stand out is the use of golden brown (amber-like) glass for the cord decoration. While usually the cords are made in opaque white and cobalt blue, the use of golden brown is relatively rare: I know of 14 specimens out of 700 with fragments found in Yorkshire, Durham, Cumbria, Northumberland and one travelled as far as Scotland'.

The corrugated fiberboard is a material that comprises of one or more flat line boards and a fluted corrugated sheet. Corrugators are used to manufacture the #corrugated #fiberboards. Far from that, the corrugated fiberboards are used to produce corrugated boxes as well as shipping containers.

The History of Corrugated Fiberboards

The corrugated fiberboards were first unveiled in the 19th century. A patent was then issued for corrugated paper in 1856 in England. After the patent was approved, the corrugated papers were then used as liners for tall hats. At the time, corrugated boxboards were not yet patented; nevertheless, the corrugated boxboards were used as shipping materials and later on a patent was issued in December 1871.

The patent for the corrugated cardboard boxes was issued to Albert Jones who resided in New York City by then. Albert Jones used the corrugated boxboards to wrap glass lantern chimneys and bottles. Since technology does evolve, G. Smyth came up with a #machine that was able to produce corrugated boards in a large scale manner in the year 1874. Oliver Long then improved on the design that G. Smyth had come up with thereby paving the way for corrugated boards that have liner sheets on both ends.

Properties of Corrugated Fiberboards

The following characteristics and properties are measured when it comes to corrugated fiberboards;

• Flat crush test

• Edge crush test

• Impact resistance

• Bending resistance

• Tear resistance

• Shock absorption

• Burst strength

How Corrugated Fiberboards are manufactured

Corrugated fiberboards are manufactured through the use of machines known as corrugators that always operate at a frequency of 150 meters per minute/ 500 feet per minute. The corrugators have been experiencing #technological advancements over the years so as to increase the efficiency during the production process. With that said, the corrugated fiberboards are manufactured using papers, of which each layer requires a different grade of paper. Paper mills are in charge of producing the papers that are used in the manufacture of the corrugated boxes. During the corrugated fiberboard manufacture process, the papers are softened through the use of high-pressure steam. After the formation of the fiberboard, it is then dried and then heated afterwards through the use of hot plates. Flute patterns are also formed in the process, and they are then joined to a flat line board that has a starch-based adhesive, and the single-face board is formed. In the process, a second flat line board is also attached to the other end of the fluted medium, and a single wall corrugated board is formed. Among the common flute, sizes is the size “C.”

The Standard US Corrugated Flutes

The corrugated fiberboards can be classified by the construction specifics, the burst strength, flat crush, flute size, edge crush strength, surface treatments, test methods, and also coatings.

Corrugated BoxDesigns

Packaging engineers are always tasked with coming up with corrugated #cardboards #boxes that suit the various products that are being exported. The corrugated boxes are well designed in a manner that the will withstand various hazards such as vibration, moisture, shock, compression, and many more environmental hazards. Additionally, the packaging is also meant to suit the needs of the consumer and the retailers.

The most commonly used design is the RSC (Regular Slotted Container). Additionally, the boxes are always pre-orders, and they are manufactured depending on the specifics of the products that are to be fitted into the boxes.

Red Bull Racing entirely develops and manufactures its champion car using Siemens’ software for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). The software forms the highly efficient digital backbone of the manufacturing process and enables new components to be designed at high speed on the computer, sent into production seconds later by mouse click and then built into the vehicle. This speeds up development and improves lap times.

The 4’x4’ acrylic print, ‘POWER & CONNECTIVITY’ features a photo collage of hardware remnants collected from the Madison Brass Works prior to its renovation into the Goodman Brassworks Facility.

These outlets, fuse boxes, and switches routed electricity throughout the building, enabling all of its manufacturing processes. The use of these on/off buttons and control dials spanned the first hundred years of the building’s history, when it functioned as a foundry where brass castings and fittings were made.

The work acknowledges the decades of industrial labor that took place at this historic site. The display also includes a didactic text panel and one of the original start/stop button boxes. A rich symbol of power and connectivity, the image serves as a reminder of how integral these two elements are to the continued success and vitality of our community.

On display as part of the GCC Brassworks permanent collection, this artwork communicates a piece of Madison’s history and helps beautify a highly-trafficked community space.

Created by Angela Richardson for the Goodman Community Center, Brassworks Facility, 214 Waubesa Street, Madison, Wisconsin, U.S.A. Permanently installed December 2018.

On Scene with Watertown Volunteer with a smoky structure fire at 20 McLennan Dr in the Oakville section of town. First due crews found heavy smoke coming from Quality Automatics Inc ,a machine shop located at that address. Crews immediately stretched lines and hit the hydrant at the end of the dead end street for an additional water source. Extension ladders were used to access the roof for ventilation since powerlines prevented the aerial ladders from being used. The fire was brought under control after approximately 30 minutes but required extensive overhaul and ventilation. In addition hazmat precautions had to be taken due to the lubricants and by products of the manufacturing process at the business were mixed with the water and foam used to extinguish the blaze.

Widespread reliance on artificial intelligence, a common theme in speculative fiction, is closer than many might believe. This rather macabre image - acrylic paint on canvas which has been scanned and photoshopped - depicts an automated manufacturing process for synthetic faces believed to be inert until integration.

At the Cup Noodles Museum, you can learn the secret of cup noodle and even have the opportunity to make one-of-a-kind ramen yourself.

Japanese food company Nissin operates this unique museum for Ramen.

The museum shows the 40 year product history as well as the founder, Mr. Ando Momofuku's creativity, by exhibiting 3,000 kinds of cup noodle packages.

They also recreate Mr. Ando Momofuku's humble research facility.

At "My Cup Noodle Factory," you can make your own cup noodle out of 5,460 soup base / topping combinations.

There is also "Cup Noodles Park", a playground for kids where they can experience the manufacturing process of Cup Noodle.

There is a "Chicken Ramen Factory" where you can make Chicken Ramen by hand, starting with kneading, spreading, and steaming the wheat flour and then drying it with the hot oil drying method. After experiencing the process that led to the invention of the world's first instant ramen, you can take your freshly made ramen with you and enjoy its delicious taste at home.

And of course you can enjoy global varieties of noodles in the contemporarily designed museum restaurant!

Ah, the trusty old dremel. Well, it is more accurate to call it a die grinder or rotary tool, as Dremel is the brand name of the ubiquitous workshop tool - kinda like how we all call what is identified as an ice box "Esky".

Yes, things were done by hand in the old days with the files and sandpapers and whatnot, but the introduction of the dremel has made things so much faster.

It can use a number of attachments for the speedy removal of material:

Works as a mini sander, angle grinder, rotary cutter, buffing wheel, etc.

Its most useful function for us so far is reshaping lug shorelines and getting a bit of extra wiggle room in lug ports for a good fitup of tubing.

For example, while tubing diameters are a set size and lugs are generally made to these dimensions, the manufacturing process often will have small variances in the inner diameter of the lug ports.

It would take an incredibly long time to sand or file away the inner diameter by hand and remove any meaningful amount of material. With a dremel and sanding drum, the job is done in a number of minutes.

Recent applications for this included Quang cleaning out the bottom bracket chain stay ports of old filler material to properly fit up the replacement chain stays for the Kenevans' repair, and Minh removing excess filler from a scalloped seat stay cap with a cone-shaped grinding stone.

Of course, for applications like these, the margin for error is quite large unless the user is heavy handed and takes off too much material in one go.

But for more intricate uses such as reshaping lug shapes and shorelines, more care is required as material is removed incredibly quickly.

Clanwilliam is situated at the foot of the mighty Cederberg mountain range, 230 km northwest from Cape Town. Clanwilliam is situated in a part of the Western Cape which is the only place in the world where Rooibos is planted and cultivated. The factory can be visited for a video-show on the tea manufacturing process.

Just after midnight Waterbury Fire received a call from the Brass Mill Mall Security Office reporting a fire in a commercial structure on East Main in the area of Wolcott St. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke showing from the building which housed Plasma Coat Inc at 785 East Main St. As fire fighters stretched lines Truck 1 and Truck 3 set up for operation. An additional call was made for Engine 5 to assist the first alarm assignment companies, specifically to feed Truck 3's operation. The stubborn and smoky fire was brought under control in about 50 minutes. Members of he City's Fire Marshal's Office responded to investigate the fire as well as the Connecticut Department of Protection to investigate and clean up any hazards from the manufacturing process that may have been released by the fire and suppression effort.
