At the mouth of Bear River in 1919, construction began on a factory for the Bear River Pulp Company. The two owners, brothers Wallace and Willis Clarke, already ran a successful sawmill upriver, but wanted to expand their operation by controlling one more step of the manufacturing process. It required a lot of water, and since they built on the saltwater shore, that demanded an impressive wooden pipeline, extending all the way inland to beyond Bear River town. Water from a dam on the river's East Branch was carried an impressive 7 kilometres, through a 2-foot diameter pipe made of Douglas Fir. The narrow path were it lay is only faintly visible now. But this project – which cost a million dollars of invested money – was a massive failure, soon going bankrupt in 1924. The structure was sporadically repurposed in the following decades, but eventually abandoned and demolished in the late 80s. The ruins were a landmark by the road and rail bridges, visible to anyone passing on the highway. Gone without a sign by the time I was born.

 

Here in the hills, two concrete foundations linger just east of the old pipeline, and 300 metres south of the mill site. I don't know their exact purpose, but they're the same architectural era as the pulp mill, and also an industrial design. Perhaps a pumping station? Time has worn them down something steady, cracked and eroded in from all sides. Any wall or roofs that stood upon them are some vague and distant memory, no stick of wood to hint their shape. I flipped through historic photos, but this site was always just out of frame. Less significant structures are often undocumented, yet all that remains. On restless spring days, they seem to dream of being noticed. I push through brush wondering if I'll find something worth the effort, waiting for clouds to soften sharp shadows that make it tougher to spot a secret. When I finally tripped in to this tangled clearing, it seems I'm one of the few who ever have. Gone wild from all that time has made of it. I feel compelled to return someday and cut the brush back. See clear through the drift from is to was, to a feeling of belonging now.

General Description:

 

The two storey Czechoslovakia Pavilion consisted of two buildings linked by an entrance hall. A simple, clear architectural strategy provided a harmonious backdrop for the exhibition's exciting displays. The first building featured two levels of exhibition space with a central courtyard which drew some of the largest crowds at Expo. Czechoslovakian art, technology and industry were presented to visitors through an attractive mixture of light, sound and video. The Hall of Centuries exhibit showcased texts and artifacts from ancient royalty. In the Hall of Tradition, visitors could find old and new glass and crystal and learn about their manufacturing processes. The World of Children enchanted the pavilion's younger visitors featuring puppet shows performing traditional tales. The second building featured four restaurants; Le Bistro served light snacks; the Bratislava Inn was a wine tavern; the Castle Restaurant featured fine Czechoslovakian cuisine; and the Prague was home to the famous pilsener Urquell beer. Offices, a gift shop and a theatre could also be found in this second Czechoslovakian building.

Kaolin (China clay) is used in the manufacture of paper products and ceramics and in fillers in plastics and rubber. Exposure occurs mostly in those involved in the mining and processing of kaolin but also in those involved in manufacturing processes utilizing kaolin. Inhaled kaolin appears as small golden brown particles and usually results in pulmonary fibrosis. In this image kaolin is present within alveoli and fibrosis is absent.

Plastic injection mold machining is a manufacturing process that requires an injection molding machine, raw plastic resin, injection mold tools.

 

The precision plastic injection molding process consists of the following key steps.

 

Step 1: The plastic resin begins as raw plastic pellets. These have been treated by drying, and then if necessary dyeing with pigments or master batch colorants.

 

Step 2: The pallets are fed into the machine through a funnel-shaped hopper. A reciprocating screw inside the barrel of the machine will inject these resins into the mold’s runner system.

 

Step 3: Resin pallets are loaded into a heated and compressed chamber called the barrel where they will be melted, forming the liquid resin.

 

Step 4: The melted resin enters into the mold cavity through a nozzle under high pressure.

 

Step 5: After the mold’s cooling and solidification, the part has been demoulded to the shape of the mold cavity.

Just after midnight Waterbury Fire received a call from the Brass Mill Mall Security Office reporting a fire in a commercial structure on East Main in the area of Wolcott St. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke showing from the building which housed Plasma Coat Inc at 785 East Main St. As fire fighters stretched lines Truck 1 and Truck 3 set up for operation. An additional call was made for Engine 5 to assist the first alarm assignment companies, specifically to feed Truck 3's operation. The stubborn and smoky fire was brought under control in about 50 minutes. Members of he City's Fire Marshal's Office responded to investigate the fire as well as the Connecticut Department of Protection to investigate and clean up any hazards from the manufacturing process that may have been released by the fire and suppression effort.

At "My Cup Noodle Factory," you can make your own cup noodle out of 5,460 soup base / topping combinations.

 

There is also "Cup Noodles Park", a playground for kids where they can experience the manufacturing process of Cup Noodle.

 

There is a "Chicken Ramen Factory" where you can make Chicken Ramen by hand, starting with kneading, spreading, and steaming the wheat flour and then drying it with the hot oil drying method. John Allison is William F. Hosford Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan and a National Academy of Engineering member.

 

His major research interest is in understanding the inter-relationships between processing, alloying, microstructure and properties in metallic materials – and in incorporating this knowledge into computational tools for use in research, education and engineering. An important part of his research is development of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) tools – and thus collaborations with other computational and experimental groups are an essential element of my work. Central to my research are investigations on the evolution of microstructures - current examples include precipitate evolution, recrystallization and grain growth and texture development in magnesium, aluminum and titanium alloys. He is also interested in mechanical behavior of these materials, with an emphasis on development of mechanistic and phenomenological understanding of the influence of microstructure on properties such as strength, ductility and fatigue resistance.

 

Allison comes to the University from Ford Motor Company, where he was a senior technical leader in the Research and Advanced Engineering organization. Over the twenty seven years of his tenure at Ford, he led teams developing integrated computational materials engineering, or ICME, methods. He helped develop advanced computer software that simulates manufacturing processes and predicts the influence of the manufacturing process on material properties. The output of these models is then coupled with product performance models to predict how manufactured components will behave during service.

My 4th year project has been to investigate replication of micron scale features in steel using a sapphire crystal. This new manufacturing process has the potential to revolutionise manufacturing of MEMS and Microfluidics. This image shows an aluminium surface after a cracked sapphire surface was imprinted into it. It was done to get an understanding of the forging loads necessary to get feature replication in Aluminium.

Charles Sheeler was a master of both painting and photography, and his work in one medium influenced and shaped his work in the other. In 1927, he was commissioned to photograph the Ford Motor Company's new River Rouge Plant near Detroit. Then the world's largest industrial complex, employing more than 75,000 workers, the plant produced Ford's Model A, successor to the famed Model T. Sheeler's photographs were used for the company's advertising, but he found himself greatly inspired by the subject, which he declared "incomparably the most thrilling I have had to work with." In 1930, he began painting oils of the plant, creating over the next six years American Landscape (1930, The Museum of Modern Art, New York), Classic Landscape (1931), River Rouge Plant (1932, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York), and City Interior (1936, Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, MA).

 

Classic Landscape depicts an area of the plant where cement was made from by-products of the car manufacturing process. The silos in the middle distance stored the cement until it could be shipped for sale. Sheeler's choice of this relatively anonymous scene, rather than one connected with the production of automobiles, suggests that his interest lay in making a generalized portrait of the landscape of industry. That, in part, may explain his use in the painting's title of the word "classic," with its connotations of typical or standard. But "classic" also evokes the culture of ancient Greece and Rome, and Sheeler certainly implies that this modern American scene can be compared to the high achievements of the classical past. One might well be reminded of classical architecture by the temple-like form of the silos and the pediment-like roofs of the nearby buildings, but the matter clearly went beyond superficial resemblance. Like others of his day, Sheeler admired architecture that was functional and straightforward, with shape and plan determined by specifics of use rather than by conventions of style and decoration. For the great French architect Le Corbusier, whose influential Towards a New Architecture Sheeler probably read around the same time he was photographing the Rouge plant, the timeless principles of good design embodied by ancient architecture were indeed still at work in "the American grain elevators and factories, the magnificent first-fruits of the new age." The iconic power and special importance of Classic Landscape were recognized from the time of its first public exhibition in New York in 1931. Through the years, it has become one of the most widely exhibited and best-known works of its era, and today it stands as a key masterwork of 20th-century American art.
