This was the last day of the Manet exhibition at the Prado in Madrid. The line was really, long. It didn't hurt that admission was free.

I was in Madrid in May during the train bombings.

Inspired by Edouard Manet's paintings

From the museum label: In Manet's portrait, his friend Desboutin embodies the type of the bohemian artist. As he fills his pipe, his dog Crouton-a gift from Degas and the etcher Ludovic Lepic-drinks from a water glass. Desboutin trained with Thomas Couture though did not overlap with Manet at the studio. He then lived abroad, primarily in Italy, before financial ruin forced him to return to Paris in the early 1870s. Manet executed this work on a scale intended for the Salon, submitting it in 1876; however, it was rejected by the jury. He exhibited it to acclaim in his studio instead.

Exhibition 'Frans Hals and the Moderns' in the Frans Hals Museum Haarlem

Frans Hals was rediscovered as a modern idol two hundred years after his death. He was admired, even adored by late 19th-century artists such as Édouard Manet, Max Liebermann and Vincent van Gogh. They were all impressed by his loose touch and rough painting style, which came across as ‘Impressionist’.
