From the museum label: Although he never exhibited with the impressionists, Manet had a formative influence on the group. He shared their commitment to depicting modern pastimes, as in this scene of a popular roller skating rink. The sport had exploded as a fashionable French pursuit in the 1870s, with five lavish rinks opening in Paris over a two-year period. The main figure here wears a chic outfit, which is displayed at its most alluring angle, accentuating its wearer’s curves. The dress contrasts starkly with the more typical all-black day dresses of the women in the middle ground. As he worked on this composition, Manet made the young child in the foreground increasingly indistinct, focusing the viewer’s attention almost exclusively on her stylish and attractive mother. The model for this figure, Henriette Hauser, was the mistress of the Prince of Orange and an aspiring actress. Manet painted her several times.

Barmaid by William Ernest Henley

Though, if you ask her name, she says Elise,

Being plain Elizabeth, e'en let it pass,

And own that, if her aspirates take their ease,

She ever makes a point, in washing glass,

Handling the engine, turning taps for tots,

And countering change, and scorning what men say,

Of posing as a dove among the pots,

Nor often gives her dignity away.

Her head's a work of art, and, if her eyes

Be tired and ignorant, she has a waist;

Cheaply the Mode she shadows; and she tries

From penny novels to amend her taste;

And, having mopped the zinc for certain years,

And faced the gas, she fades and disappears.

Here's the real painting.

From the museum label: Although Manet often sat for portraits by fellow artists, this is one of only two known painted self- portraits. He presents himself both as a painter, holding the tools of his trade, and as a Parisian dandy, in his black felt hat and yellow jacket. The rapidly sketched, seemingly unfinished hand echoes the quick action of the artist at work.

in the Musee D'Orsay, Paris, France

From the museum label: Manet's free brushwork and virtuoso use of colour instantly earned him a reputation as a popular flower painter. Here, he depicts a bunch of peonies, a very fashionable oriental flower in nineteenth century Europe which he grew in his garden in Gennevilliers. The bouquet is in the process of being arranged. The painter shows a fresh cut flower in the foreground alongside fallen petals. This allusion to the passage of time is perfectly in keeping with the tradition of vanitas pictures in art.

At the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid

*Autor: Edouard Manet

The left-hand section of the canvas showing General Mejía was probably cut off by Manet himself. After the artist's death the canvas was cut up into smaller fragments, some of which were sold separately. Edgar Degas eventually purchased all the surviving fragments and reassembled them on a single canvas. A sketch for a group of soldiers, formerly in the Gallery and now in the British Museum, was once thought to have been made in preparation for this work, but its attribution to Manet is no longer certain.
