From the museum label: Manet and Degas seem to have been especially close in the late 1860s. Degas captured the casual intimacy of their evenings together in this double portrait of Manet listening to his wife, Suzanne, at the piano, then gave the painting to his friend. For reasons still unknown, Manet slashed the right-hand side of the canvas, slicing off his wife's profile. The angered Degas reclaimed the gift and then returned a small still life Manet had given him. Decades later, the cropped composition could still be seen conspicuously hung in Degas's private apartment. It is unclear when or why the blank strip of canvas with the red atelier stamp was added, but some have speculated that in his seventies, Degas intended to repair the ruptured work.

Manet'in sanat kariyeri, önce çeşitli sanatçıların atölyelerinde çalışarak başladı.

From the museum label: This sheet presents another response by Manet to the French government's brutal suppression of the Paris Commune in 1871. Whether he based this execution scene on his own observation or written reports, he layered the composition with self-citation. The back of the sheet shows a tracing in reverse from his censored print, The Execution of Maximilian, on view nearby. In the drawing on the front, worked up with ink and watercolor, he converted that composition to a scene of the Parisian conflict: the Mexican firing squad became French soldiers, while Maximilian and his generals became anonymous victims.

From the museum label: Long inspired by Spanish art and culture, Manet here depicted the star of a popular Spanish ballet that found great success in Paris. When the artist first exhibited the painting at the Galerie Martinet in 1863, Lola appeared against a neutral background. He later modified the setting by adding a stage backdrop seen from behind and a glimpse of the audience beyond. Portraying performers suspended between the spheres of public and private, real life and performance, later became a preoccupation of Degas's, which he first explored in Mademoiselle Fiocre in the Ballet "La Source," on view nearby.
