From the museum label: This is Manet's second major painting featuring Berthe Morisot, after The Balcony, on view in the previous gallery. Here, in her studio, she takes a decidedly more relaxed pose. Manet asked permission to exhibit the painting, which he described as a "study," in the Salon of 1871, but the event was canceled that year amid the chaotic aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. When it was finally shown in 1873, it was criticized for its lack of finish. Manet had expressed the same concern to Morisot about her own work.

Alternate title: The Young Flautist
Manet, who found in a Spanish manner and subject matter an outlet for his own talent, did not visit Spain and the Prado Museum until 1865. He was particularly impressed by Velasquez's Pablo de Valladolid and told his friend Fantin-Latour: "[It is] the most astonishing piece of painting ever done... the background disappears: it is air which surrounds the fellow, dressed all in black and full of life".
When he returned to Paris, Manet applied these principles to a contemporary subject. An ordinary, nameless child from the band is therefore treated like a Spanish grandee. Not only does Manet upset established hierarchies of representation, but he also uses daringly simplified language: solid areas of colour, very obvious in the black parts, a few modelling effects for the flesh and the instrument case, and thick streaks of white which underline the folds of the fabric. The palette is narrow, with the faintest borderline between the horizontal plane of ground and the vertical plane of the background, painted in a fairly uniform grey and utterly plain.
The work, rejected by the jury of the Salon of 1866, is one of those which fired Emile Zola's enthusiasm for Manet. In the truthfulness of the approach and manner, the writer detected a truly modern feeling.

Today D3 learned that not all jellyfish are fun to play With. Just another fun day at the Beach. I grabbed the phone and took a photo of the culprit lying innocently in the shallows.

From the museum label: Long inspired by Spanish art and culture, Manet here depicted the star of a popular Spanish ballet that found great success in Paris. When the artist first exhibited the painting at the Galerie Martinet in 1863, Lola appeared against a neutral background. He later modified the setting by adding a stage backdrop seen from behind and a glimpse of the audience beyond. Portraying performers suspended between the spheres of public and private, real life and performance, later became a preoccupation of Degas's, which he first explored in Mademoiselle Fiocre in the Ballet "La Source," on view nearby.
