Through the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, Congress designated the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area (NCA) in Washington County, Utah “to conserve, protect, and enhance …the ecological, scenic, wildlife, recreational, cultural, historical, natural, educational, and scientific resources” of public lands in the NCA.
The Colorado Plateau, Great Basin Desert, and Mojave Desert overlap in Washington County. In this transition zone, unusual plant and animal species have evolved, including the dwarf bearclaw-poppy and Shivwits milk-vetch, small native plants that grow nowhere else on earth. The hot, arid Mojave Desert provides habitat for diverse wildlife, such as kit fox, Gambel’s quail, and the Mojave Desert tortoise. This native tortoise is listed under the Endangered Species Act and is at risk of extinction due to habitat loss and other factors. The newly-designated Red Mountain and Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness areas are also within this NCA. Here, hikers, backpackers, and equestrians can enjoy scenic vistas, solitude, and natural quiet, just a few miles drive from local communities.
More than 130 miles of non-motorized recreation trails (hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trail riding) are available for public use in the NCA. The Red Cliffs Recreation Area offers camping and day use areas, in a developed site where fees are collected. All motorized vehicle travel, including Off-Highway Vehicles, is limited to designated roads in the NCA. No motorized or mechanized vehicle travel is allowed in the Red Mountain and Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness areas, without special authorization from BLM.

Allstar Weekend wows Kaiserslautern

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – When Athena Balderas got picked up from Ramstein Intermediate School last Friday, she thought her mom was taking her to rent some movies.
“No, I have something better,” her mother Michelle Stevens told her. “I have a surprise for you.”
Earlier, Stevens told Facebook friends she would see Allstar Weekend, the latest American teen music sensation, with her daughter at the band’s Jan. 21 stop in Kaiserslautern. A friend, who had won premium seats and backstage passes from the American Forces Network, offered them to Stevens.
They bought Allstar Weekend’s debut album “Suddenly Yours” and found the band’s videos online. That evening they were in the front row at Vogelweh’s Galaxy Theater.
“It’s really cool to see an American band,” said Athena, 8, who first heard about the band while visiting relatives last year in upstate New York.
In mid-January, the San Diego-based Allstar Weekend – who got their start on the Disney Channel in 2009 – toured U.S. military bases in England, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, courtesy of Armed Force Entertainment. The show, sponsored locally by U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern’s Directorate of Families and Morale Welfare & Recreation, was better than driving to Frankfurt to watch a concert, Stevens said.
“Here it feels like home, we’re celebrating together with our military family,” Stevens said. “Plus, it’s nice to have something American to do.”
The band launched into their set of pop rock songs to include; “Journey to the End of My Life,” “Here With You,” “The Weekend,” and “Dance Forever.” They also covered of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” and Bowling For Soup’s “1985.”
They also offered some songs on acoustic guitars and even rapped a little. During the piano-based ballad “Amy,” the band invited a teenage girl to sit onstage. Afterward, another teen jumped onstage to offer hugs.
Each song ended with the high-pitched shrill of screaming young girls, dozens who crowded the stage during the show. Like many parents, Air Force Master Sgt. Ron Russo sat in the back of the theater. His wife Sibel sat up front with daughters Anatolia, 8, and Kayra, 2.
One morning he heard on AFN, “The next caller had a chance to win.” Russo dialed the station, knowing nothing about the contest or the prize.
“He asked the easiest question about Justin Timberlake, about how he started with the Mickey Mouse club and then was with a famous boy band,” the 40-year-old Virginia Beach-native said. “I said ‘C’mon, the answer’s J.T.’”
After the show, Lt. Col. Kevin Hutchison and Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Jessup, the command team from U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, thanked the band and presented each player with a command coin.
“We know you have to leave home and live on the road to offer performances to our Soldiers, airmen and their families,” Hutchison said. “We recognize things of excellence and this was and an excellent performance.”
As a kid, singer Zach Porter’s father was in the Navy and he remembers living on bases and moving a lot, he said. He can relate to the audience of military members and their families, he said.
“It’s a big part of who I am today,” Porter said “I understand it’s hard every two years packing up and start new schools and make new friends. So, I’m glad we got to do this.”
While military audiences overseas may have missed Allstar Weekend’s stateside television appearances, their presence on the Internet gives new fans a chance to further explore the band’s music, Porter said.
“It’s good for us to play for a new audience,” Porter said. “We covered a few songs that we thought people would know, if they don’t know all of our songs. It warmed up the audience to our own music and bridged the gap.”
Touring military bases was also a chance for the band to give back something to those serving overseas, said bass guitarist Cameron Quiseng. He especially enjoyed feedback from the crowd, when they signed autographs after each show.
“The crowds are amazing, chanting and singing along,” Quiseng said. “For us to come and perform for them and give them a good time, it really means a lot to us.”

BOSS Dumpling Making at the Senior Home

CAMP HUMPHREYS – As part of its outreach program and in celebration of Lunar New Year, the Camp Humphreys Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers and other volunteers worked together to make and share mandoo dumplings with the elderly Feb. 2.
The word mandoo originated from China and is considered a special food, especially for the beginning of the New Year. Eating dumpling soup on Lunar New Year’s Day means “Happy New Year.”
More than 40 members of the Camp Humphreys community took part in and experienced making dumplings and shared it with the residents of the House of Wusula, in Yangseong-myeon, Anseoung-si.
The purpose of this event was to celebrate Lunar New Year with the residents and being a good neighbor in the local community and to give back to the local community by getting involved with Korean culture. Moreover, not only can the Soldiers make lifelong friends, but they also will have a more positive outlook while serving here.
“What better way to give back to the community than for our military personnel to get involved with Korean culture and specifically learning some of these celebrations like Lunar New Year,” said Spc. Kareen K. Medeiros, the Humphreys BOSS President /Area III Coordinator. “And, it is a nice way for the Soldiers to get to know what is around them. They work extremely hard. For them to have downtime to have some fun and something positive, this is a wonderful thing for us to get involved in the program like this.”
During the volunteering, the participants experienced a variety of Korean traditions for the first time. They played a Korean New Year’s game called Yutnori, which is a kind of Korean board game. They also sang together the Korean folk song, “Arirang” and a Korean New Year’s song, “Seolnal.”
Some also had the opportunity to wear traditional Korean clothing, called Hanbok, which can prove to be difficult to wear without help from someone with experience. While wearing the clothing, participants learned New Year’s greetings and performed a New Year’s bow to the elderly.
Overall, the highlight of the volunteer trip was dumpling making. Everyone gathered around the tables and started making dumplings in accordance with an interpreters’ explanation.
“I really enjoyed myself,” said Pfc. Ryan R. Resendez, assigned to Bravo Company, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion . “I was glad to make the elderly smile and meet new people. It was great day. If I have another chance, I’d definitely like to come again.”

Grand Canyon, AZ September 19, 2019 - National Park Service staff closed the doors on livestock trailers yesterday, securing 31 bison inside to transfer them to the InterTribal Buffalo Council who will take them on the journey to join their new herd with the Quapaw tribe in Oklahoma.
The transfer of the bison concluded the Grand Canyon National Park's pilot program for corralling and relocating bison from the North Rim.
"It's an historic moment. These are the first bison ever captured and permanently removed from Grand Canyon," said Grand Canyon National Park Bison Project Manager Miranda Terwilliger.
Leading up to the corralling operations, a corral was regularly supplied with food and water to encourage bison to enter freely and increase their exposure to humans.
"It's a passive process. You want to work as quietly and calmly around the bison to keep their stress levels down because they have very little interactions with humans," said Chris Clark, the South Rim lead mule packer who served as the corral boss."
After a large group of bison entered the corral, during the operation period, staff closed the corral gates and began processing them in preparation for shipment. The processing included separating and releasing bison that were too young or too large or old to make the trip. They were guided into a squeeze chute, where the scientists took blood and genetic samples and tagged them per U.S. Department of Agriculture shipping regulations.
"We had an amazing team who worked really well together," said Terwilliger. "We did a lot of mock runs and training in advance with other parks and agencies."
Biologists from the Kaibab National Forest, Yellowstone National Park, Badlands National Park, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the InterTribal Buffalo Council assisted. Also present was a National Park Service veterinarian to oversee the well-being of the bison.
Several additional animals were outfitted with tracking collars and released during the corralling process. The collaring was conducted with the assistance of U.S. Geological Survey scientists for park wildlife biologists to study the bison migratory patterns and population size.
The goal of the pilot program was to capture and relocate up to 100 bison. The pilot program was conducted this year due to the bison migrating to a warmer location on the North Rim from early snowfall last year. There's approximately 600 bison on the North Rim, and Grand Canyon National Park is reducing the size to under 200 over the next three to five years to protect park resources from the impacts of the bison population.

How do you count fish in a river? If you're a fish biologist working for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), you start by stuffing yourself into a dry suit and then traipsing through the forests and down to the river. With a snorkel and mask you plunge into the river and slither around in search of Coho, Chinook and Steelhead. These fish like to rest and stay cool in the recently built log jams.
To track how many fish are in the Salmon River, fish biologist Bruce Zoellick and wildlife biologist Corbin Murphy stuff themselves into dry suits and strap on a snorkel to get up-close and personal with the fish. They count fish by species as they snorkel around the log jams and side channels.
Habitat for Coho, Chinook, Steelhead, and a smattering of other fish that consider the “wild and scenic” river their home is getting a remodel. Through a cooperative effort, trees have been pulled up and hauled to the river where engineers have built log jams for fish and other aquatic species.
The Salmon River Restoration Project is a cooperative effort with several partners including the BLM, Freshwater Trust, Nature Conservancy, Portland Water Bureau, and a host of others passionate about aquatic restoration.

For the last two weeks, I've received daily phonecalls from a recruiter named 'Bill" at a company called "Human Capital Management", based in Devon, PA. For whatever reason, every few months, they'll call my phone EVERY DAY for WEEKS on end. Despite the fact that I'm not currently looking for a job, and have never answered any phonecall, they keep calling.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM abbreviated) is an art museum in Vienna. It is one of the largest and most important museums in the world. It was opened in 1891 and 2012 visited of 1.351.940 million people.
The museum
The Kunsthistorisches Museum is with its opposite sister building, the Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum), the most important historicist large buildings of the Ringstrasse time. Together they stand around the Maria Theresa square, on which also the Maria Theresa monument stands. This course spans the former glacis between today's ring road and 2-line, and is forming a historical landmark that also belongs to World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Vienna.

The Museum came from the collections of the Habsburgs, especially from the portrait and armor collections of Ferdinand of Tyrol, the collection of Emperor Rudolf II (most of which, however scattered) and the art collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm into existence. Already In 1833 asked Joseph Arneth, curator (and later director) of the Imperial Coins and Antiquities Cabinet, bringing together all the imperial collections in a single building .
Architectural History
The contract to build the museum in the city had been given in 1858 by Emperor Franz Joseph. Subsequently, many designs were submitted for the ring road zone. Plans by August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Null planned to build two museum buildings in the immediate aftermath of the Imperial Palace on the left and right of the Heroes' Square (Heldenplatz). The architect Ludwig Förster planned museum buildings between the Schwarzenberg Square and the City Park, Martin Ritter von Kink favored buildings at the corner Währingerstraße/ Scots ring (Schottenring), Peter Joseph, the area Bellariastraße, Moritz von Loehr the south side of the opera ring, and Ludwig Zettl the southeast side of the grain market (Getreidemarkt).
From 1867, a competition was announced for the museums, and thereby set their current position - at the request of the Emperor, the museum should not be too close to the Imperial Palace, but arise beyond the ring road. The architect Carl von Hasenauer participated in this competition and was able the at that time in Zürich operating Gottfried Semper to encourage to work together. The two museum buildings should be built here in the sense of the style of the Italian Renaissance. The plans got the benevolence of the imperial family. In April 1869, there was an audience with of Joseph Semper at the Emperor Franz Joseph and an oral contract was concluded, in July 1870 was issued the written order to Semper and Hasenauer.
Crucial for the success of Semper and Hasenauer against the projects of other architects were among others Semper's vision of a large building complex called "Imperial Forum", in which the museums would have been a part of. Not least by the death of Semper in 1879 came the Imperial Forum not as planned for execution, the two museums were built, however.
Construction of the two museums began without ceremony on 27 November 1871 instead. Semper moved to Vienna in the sequence. From the beginning, there were considerable personal differences between him and Hasenauer, who finally in 1877 took over sole construction management. 1874, the scaffolds were placed up to the attic and the first floor completed, built in 1878, the first windows installed in 1879, the Attica and the balustrade from 1880 to 1881 and built the dome and the Tabernacle. The dome is topped with a bronze statue of Pallas Athena by Johannes Benk.
The lighting and air conditioning concept with double glazing of the ceilings made the renunciation of artificial light (especially at that time, as gas light) possible, but this resulted due to seasonal variations depending on daylight to different opening times .

The Kunsthistorisches Museum was on 17 October 1891 officially opened by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Since 22 October 1891 , the museum is accessible to the public. Two years earlier, on 3 November 1889, the collection of arms, Arms and Armour today, had their doors open. On 1 January 1890 the library service resumed its operations. The merger and listing of other collections of the Highest Imperial Family from the Upper and Lower Belvedere, the Hofburg Palace and Ambras in Tyrol will need another two years.

Very soon the room the Court Museum (Hofmuseum) for the imperial collections was offering became too narrow. To provide temporary help, an exhibition of ancient artifacts from Ephesus in the Theseus Temple was designed. However, additional space had to be rented in the Lower Belvedere.
1914, after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne, his " Estonian Forensic Collection " passed to the administration of the Court Museum. This collection, which emerged from the art collection of the house of d' Este and world travel collection of Franz Ferdinand, was placed in the New Imperial Palace since 1908. For these stocks, the present collection of old musical instruments and the Museum of Ethnology emerged.
The First World War went by, apart from the oppressive economic situation without loss. The farm museum remained during the five years of war regularly open to the public.
Until 1919 the K.K. Art Historical Court Museum was under the authority of the Oberstkämmereramt (head chamberlain office) and belonged to the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. The officials and employees were part of the royal household.
First Republic
The transition from monarchy to republic, in the museum took place in complete tranquility. On 19 November 1918 the two imperial museums on Maria Theresa Square were placed under the state protection of the young Republic of German Austria. Threatening to the stocks of the museum were the claims raised in the following weeks and months of the "successor states" of the monarchy as well as Italy and Belgium on Austrian art collection. In fact, it came on 12th February 1919 to the violent removal of 62 paintings by armed Italian units. This "art theft" left a long time trauma among curators and art historians.
It was not until the Treaty of Saint-Germain of 10 September 1919, providing in Article 195 and 196 the settlement of rights in the cultural field by negotiations. The claims of Belgium, Czechoslovakia, and Italy again could mostly being averted in this way. Only Hungary, which presented the greatest demands by far, was met by more than ten years of negotiation in 147 cases.
On 3 April 1919 was the expropriation of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine by law and the acquisition of its property, including the "Collections of the Imperial House" , by the Republic. Of 18 June 1920 the then provisional administration of the former imperial museums and collections of Este and the secular and clergy treasury passed to the State Office of Internal Affairs and Education, since 10 November 1920, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Education. A few days later it was renamed the Art History Court Museum in the "Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna State", 1921 "Kunsthistorisches Museum" . Of 1st January 1921 the employees of the museum staff passed to the state of the Republic.
Through the acquisition of the former imperial collections owned by the state, the museum found itself in a complete new situation. In order to meet the changed circumstances in the museum area, designed Hans Tietze in 1919 the "Vienna Museum program". It provided a close cooperation between the individual museums to focus at different houses on main collections. So dominated exchange, sales and equalizing the acquisition policy in the interwar period. Thus resulting until today still valid collection trends. Also pointing the way was the relocation of the weapons collection from 1934 in its present premises in the New Castle, where since 1916 the collection of ancient musical instruments was placed.
With the change of the imperial collections in the ownership of the Republic the reorganization of the internal organization went hand in hand, too. Thus the museum was divided in 1919 into the Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection (with the Oriental coins)

The Museum 1938-1945
Count Philipp Ludwig Wenzel Sinzendorf according to Rigaud. Clarisse 1948 by Baroness de Rothschildt "dedicated" to the memory of Baron Alphonse de Rothschildt; restituted to the Rothschilds in 1999, and in 1999 donated by Bettina Looram Rothschild, the last Austrian heiress.
With the "Anschluss" of Austria to the German Reich all Jewish art collections such as the Rothschilds were forcibly "Aryanised". Collections were either "paid" or simply distributed by the Gestapo at the museums. This resulted in a significant increase in stocks. But the KHM was not the only museum that benefited from the linearization. Systematically looted Jewish property was sold to museums, collections or in pawnshops throughout the empire.
After the war, the museum struggled to reimburse the "Aryanised" art to the owners or their heirs. They forced the Rothschild family to leave the most important part of their own collection to the museum and called this "dedications", or "donations". As a reason, was the export law stated, which does not allow owners to perform certain works of art out of the country. Similar methods were used with other former owners. Only on the basis of international diplomatic and media pressure, to a large extent from the United States, the Austrian government decided to make a change in the law (Art Restitution Act of 1998, the so-called Lex Rothschild). The art objects were the Rothschild family refunded only in the 1990s.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum operates on the basis of the federal law on the restitution of art objects from the 4th December 1998 (Federal Law Gazette I, 181 /1998) extensive provenance research. Even before this decree was carried out in-house provenance research at the initiative of the then archive director Herbert Haupt. This was submitted in 1998 by him in collaboration with Lydia Grobl a comprehensive presentation of the facts about the changes in the inventory levels of the Kunsthistorisches Museum during the Nazi era and in the years leading up to the State Treaty of 1955, an important basis for further research provenance.
The two historians Susanne Hehenberger and Monika Löscher are since 1st April 2009 as provenance researchers at the Kunsthistorisches Museum on behalf of the Commission for Provenance Research operating and they deal with the investigation period from 1933 to the recent past.
The museum today
Today the museum is as a federal museum, with 1st January 1999 released to the full legal capacity - it was thus the first of the state museums of Austria, implementing the far-reaching self-financing. It is by far the most visited museum in Austria with 1.3 million visitors (2007).
The Kunsthistorisches Museum is under the name Kunsthistorisches Museum and Museum of Ethnology and the Austrian Theatre Museum with company number 182081t since 11 June 1999 as a research institution under public law of the Federal virtue of the Federal Museums Act, Federal Law Gazette I/115/1998 and the Museum of Procedure of the Kunsthistorisches Museum and Museum of Ethnology and the Austrian Theatre Museum, 3 January 2001, BGBl II 2/ 2001, in force since 1 January 2001, registered.
In fiscal 2008, the turnover was 37.185 million EUR and total assets amounted to EUR 22.204 million. In 2008 an average of 410 workers were employed.
