615AD (c), River Deben, Kingdom of East Anglia (near modern day Woodbridge, Suffolk, England). King Rædwald and his eldest son Rægenhere carry out an inspection of the repairs of their fleet.
Each winter the Angles hauled there longboats out of the sea to carry out repairs and maintenance. During the winter Edwin of Northumbria stays with King Rædwald in exile. At some point Rædwald agrees to hand Edwin over to Æthelfrith, King of Bernica and Edwin's brother. However after Rædwald is berated by his wife he plans to assist Edwin and prepares to do battle with Æthelfrith.
Right, the above story is a mixture of made up history by me, history as told by Bede in 'The Ecclesiastical History of the English People' and an idea by Carla Nayland. The idea of the boat being hauled out of the water was inspired by Bernard Cornwalls book, 'The Last Kingdom', which has been made into a TV drama and is currently being aired on BBC, Thursday nights, 9pm.
The ship is based on the Nydam Ship, which was found in Nydam Mose, at Øster Sottrup, a town located in Sundeved, eight kilometres from Sønderborg, Denmark and the ship in burial mound 1, Sutton Hoo, England. The ship in Sutton Hoo is thought to have been in poor condition, hence the repairs in this build

There is more of this story to come!
Just to raise a smile in these dark days. 😊.

‘And we call this making History’
Today saw the opening of the new pedestrian bridge part of Scarborough Bridge, York. This is the first new bridge in central York for 138 years, so a nice little bit of history in the making.
The bridge was due to open at 15:00, so at 14:00 I was taking things nice and easy at the railway station looking out over the bridge. Then I noticed the temporary barrier to the bridge being lifted out of place. Was the bridge opening early? No time to wait and see, I literally sprinted round and yes, the bridge opened an hour early!
This picture was taken at 14:02, with the first train passing by being the new TransPennine Express locomotive 68032 ‘Destroyer’. There was no time for me to carefully compose or even to think, I was out of breath and arrived literally at the same time as the locomotive! At least the historic first picture was in the bag!
As can be seen from the picture, at first there was just a trickle of people crossing, I think I was in the first ten, not that I’m, ahem, bothered by such things! Soon though the bridge became busy with people enjoying the new crossing.
Whilst I don’t think my picture is likely to win any prizes, it is a little piece of history!
Link below to the story, with a nice picture half way down!

The Sun has moved behind the Golan Heights (the close-in ridge, lower left) so the photography gods are making me work for a decent composition. Otherwise, it was a warm, pleasant morning on the mountain.

I am no different to any other girl when it comes to feeling good about what I am wearing. This long dress feels wonderful on and I am hoping others will like to see me in it.
