Living in an older house near the sea means regular maintenance - or steady deterioration.

My house is very plain - no ornamentation - so less to look after.

This terrace of Victorian houses must have been grand once, but now most of them look sadly neglected.

Long time no see...

In the meantime, I have made a significant progress building the AT-AT maintenance hangar.

So here's a WIP, I hope you like it. The floor will be filled with tiles and I will add some LED lighting, too.

An usual Easter afternoon had brought an unusual fellow on an unusual place in Siilinjärvi. North Rail's class Dr21 diesel locomotive number 1762 was brought to Siilinjärvi yard for maintenance session as an Estonian maintenance crew is doing some check ups to the massive diesel, so it's works can continue on the following week in Yara's at Ruokosuo.

Reddish Traction Maintenance Depot in North Reddish. Saturday 18th July 1981

Reddish depot opened in June 1954 as a sub shed of Gorton Motive Power Depot (code 39A, 9H from 1st February 1958 and 9G from 20th April 1958) having been built to maintain the locomotives and electric multiple units for the Manchester, Sheffield and Wath electric system. The depot also maintained the Midland Pullman diesel-electric multiple units during its short stint of operation between Manchester Central and London St Pancras. The depot was allocated the code 9C on 9th September 1963 which was altered to RS on 6th May 1973. After the closure of the Woodhead line as a through route the depot continued to maintain the class 506 electric multiple units until closure on 1st May 1983 when the class 506 units transferred to Longsight Electric Traction Maintenance Depot

A wide variety of work equipment sits in 38th Street Yard, which is one of two yards not used for revenue equipment. Notable pieces seen here are:

- The final run R42s, with the large (A) bullet.

- R14 de-icer car RD340, built in 1949 and the last of its kind in service in the system, identifiable by its clerestory roof.

.... The day I went to visit and photograph the bridge, was the ONE day of the year, the historic covered bridge is power washed clean. Spray wash includes the bridge span, clearing cobwebs from lights and upper areas, cleaning the wainscoting and timbers. Fortunately for me, I could still access the bridge as a pedestrian, it was only closed to vehicular traffic ....

I've wanted to create a piece like this for as long as I've been using the LDD program, to add a scene to one of my models, instead of just a white, or coloured background. Unfortunately these seem to take a substantial amount of time, as I always over engineer them, and add great amounts of detail, but with my current free time being slim, I'm unable to put a background that I'm happy with to any of my models.

I've been thinking of a way to compromise, and although I'm happy with this project, I think it will be my only one like this. If I am to build any more, then I will simply have to put the time in wherever and whenever I can, and create something worthy of the effort.

My inspiration for this particular build came from when I saw Alex Sonny's contest entry piece, which is a simplistic, yet stunning piece of work. Even before I started building, my intention was never to copy his work brick for brick, but simply the concept, and so I sent him a short message just letting him know my intentions, and asking permission to use his idea. Both me, and Alex agreed that he didn't own the concept of a tank in a state of maintenance, but he was still very grateful that I asked first, and was kind enough to give me the go ahead.

You can find Alex's beautiful scene here, please do take a look.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first thing you might notice about this area, is that it seems to be rather busy, and that is because the country is currently not officially at war with anyone, so workshops such as this are not as crowded as they are during wartime. Minor border skirmishes are still common, so troops, as well as tanks and other vehicles are still sent to border regions with countries that are considered a threat. Even during peacetime, tanks such as the Marauder are still deployed in considerable numbers to deter any envious neighbour nations from thinking we've become lax behind our walls.

This particular Marauder tank was one of the early models off of the production line, and has been in service for three years, but now during peacetime, the chance to recall such early models and upgrade them to newer specifications is ideal. Even though war machines are expected to be lost, and their life spans can often be short, regular maintenance is critical to keeping your armed forces running, and fighting. Even though it's not always possible to pull front line vehicles out of a fight just to oil the gears and change air filters, every effort is made to make sure that vehicles are serviced to a certain degree. Being in a well equipped workshop like this, there is nothing that can't be fixed, replaced, or improved. Every need of the tank is met here, be it from simply replacing worn track pins, to completely updating the entire operating system of the tank, and everything inbetween.

Tanks are driven into the workshop under their own power, and then lined up onto a long stretch of independent free moving rollers, until they're hooked into a conveyor system, which is controlled by a terminal located at the side of the line. The tank will be pulled to pre-set stops on the line, where various tasks will be completed, such as removing the gun barrel, hoisting the turret off of the hull, and removal of the engine. As this is an early model, it is in need of many upgrades, including a new braking system, but those bolts can be stubborn, and may require a little heat to be persuaded. The engine will be moved to a specialist area of the workshop for a strip down and full rebuild, this can take the longest time of all the separate jobs. It takes two men to push the engine down the line, a wheeled carriage does make it easier, but still not easy. A faulty fuel sender in one of the auxiliary fuel tanks has been causing trouble for some time, and if you're going to replace one, you might as well replace them both. Worn mounting brackets on the gun barrel can cause misalignment at longer ranges, but the Marauder has found to seldom suffer from this problem, however, while the tank is in the workshop, it makes sense to replace such a crucial part while you can. A barrel cleaning is something that can be done in the field, but it can be done with much greater care and detail in the workshop.

Getting that guy up that ladder was a bloody nightmare. Even the workshop needs repairs from time to time.

The Upper West Side of Manhattan is not lacking for buildings with ornamentation and detail.

Some have landmark status, some have architectural fame, and many are just ordinary apartment buildings that were built in a time when attention was paid to workmanship and excellence in design.

This Hotel is on the same block, but opposite side, of where I live. I can see the back of the hotel from my roof.

For a little perspective, this photo is facing south, and is the front of the building.

I have posted a self-portrait that I did last year with the back of this hotel as my background.

The second photo is the hotel from the side to the right (east side of the building) of this shot.

Cambridge is full of these little quirks and all of them have a "legend" attached to them. The "legend" about this is that it suddenly appeared overnight in the pavement outside Kings College many years ago, and no one knows who or why.

All complete nonsense of course (they all are), we know the artist, we know when and we know the reason, but why spoil the allure of the mystery :-)

Bit late today and a bit busy tonight, so will catch up tomorrow.

Maintenance on our R32s cars will keep them on the rails until new R179 cars are delivered. We're doing a limited-scope maintenance makeover on four cars per week.

With their once-gleaming stainless-steel bodies dulled by age and their windows scarred by the negative attention of vandals, MTA New York City Transit's R32 subway cars are living out their final years of service until the arrival of their replacements. In order to make those last trips go more smoothly, however, the cars are "having a little work done."

The "Brightliners," as the Budd-built cars were dubbed upon their introduction into service back in 1964, were the first large fleet of stainless steel cars purchased by New York City Transit and the first corrosion resistant cars placed in service since the ten experimental cars purchased in 1949 by the New York City Board of Transportation.

Abused Abandoned Jungle Dogs.

Back Story .........................................

It was still dark out when I left our place.

Daylight had just arrived while pulling in-

to The Dog Palace.

Mama and BTP were going bananas, and,

Rocky showed up all happy and full of fun.

Did the same same routine with the dogs

then filled four special bags full of food an

stuffed them into my cargo pockets.

Time 2 go .......... ;-)

First stop is over at The Leroy Crews Turf.

Boo Boo, Angel Eyes, DJ and 2-Tone went

completely bonkers when they spotted me

crossing through The DMZ. They know whats

in my bulging cargo pockets. Rocky was doing

an escort. When DJ got to close Rocky had to go

over the rules one more time. DJ flattened out

on the ground showing Rocky that he hadn't

forgotten, it's just that he got caught up in all the

excitement, Rocky was good with that. Mama was

grumbling as everyone wanted to kiss her cone out

of respect for The Queen of The Jungle ....................

Once a big bag of goodies is spread out in a long line

everybody dove in and chowed down , including Freckles.

Showed the monk and female workers that I'd be taking

2-Tone back in to see the dog doctor, she was picked up

at 9 o'clock sharp. Her stitches will be removed on the 16th.

From there we stopped and cared for all 3 of the puppies.

Continuing on, next stop is at the nuns where Tinker Bell,

Little Stubby, Anna, Pumpkin and Legs are allotted their

fair share of attention plus special goodies from my pocket.

Still with me ?

Rocky, Mama and Legs stuck close to me as we headed to

the spirit house. Not a single monkey today ?

This is where the 3 dogs all share one of the big bags full

of kibble and chopped hot dog meat. Rocky is so gentle

when he takes food from my hand, almost like a butterfly.

Then his powerful jaws slowly crushes the kibble, sounds

like he's crushing coconuts. Legs zip's around like a young

monkey while Mama casually consumes her own portion.

.

Alright, now lets talk about this photo ........................................

We've just returned from the spirit house stopping once

again at the nuns place. More attention was given to all

the K9 residents, a little extra of course for Pumpkin who

was waiting up on her boulder acting all silly.

The nurse nun is jabbering away about Mama when she

does an about face, steps out on the road and flips Mama

over for an exam . Notice Mr Rocky staying real close just

in-case he needs to guard his mom from any wild monkeys.

Legs as usual is just full of fun an zips around for no other

reason then to zip around ... ;-)~~~

.

Tomorrow I'll finish fine tuning a few things on the scooter.

Chain seems to be going slack so that will be checked out.

More kibble will be purchased as we are now using 50 kilos

a month. In fact it's closer to 60 kilos of quality dog kibble.

Today is Friday so my next trip to the monkey temple will be

on Sunday. The new bike will be used as I can carry 10 kilos

of kibble between my legs comfortably and safely, kind of .

Next would be Tuesday then again on Thursday the 16th the

scooter/sidecar will once again transport 2-Tone in and out

to the dog doctor having her stitches removed.

Couple more items before I forget .............................................

The reflection you see in the swamp is the eastern side of

The Dog Palace as the morning sun illuminates it's colors.

Also a thanks goes out to "all" who have donated to this cause.

Thank you so much, without your help these dogs suffer greatly.

Thank you for your comments and donations.

Thank You.
