One for the geeks.

So, I upgraded a little while back. And as you do, you photograph your nice new hardware to show off to people. Except, of course, until you get to the bit where the floppy ... uh... flopply IC print got past the QA team. Nice going guys.

Gadgets. I built one working PC out of 2 dead ones and added a HDD from an old expired PVR. Recycle, re-use, recover.

We have a ton of computer hardware. Here you see some of the more than 50 (ya, we said fifty) spare hard drives that we keep on-hand. All are blank or empty and ready for use. We keep spare drives for each model, speed and size that we have in production (73, 146, 160, 250, 450, 500GB, 1 and 2TB at 5,400, 7,500, 10K and 15K RPM. Makes our heads spin. We also keep spare SAS5i, SAS6i, PERC5i, PERC6e, and PERC6i RAID controllers, an assortment of mainboards, CPUs, NICs, fans, backplanes... How did we acquire all this? It happened over time. New stuff rolls in almost daily.

This shows the routing of the 1MHz bus cable underneath the mainboard. I use some thin cardboard on the first section before the bend, to minimise the risk of pins piercing the cable.

It took a little over 2 weeks of lunches to find enough parts in the DS warehouse to make this near mint condition Bolt ii Chassis! It started as a heavily damaged gold bolt II. I believe this was originally one of our press review units. I'm super happy with how it turned out. It's sort of a franken bolt ii utilizing parts from 3 revisions. the mainboard tray and case bottom had moderate shipping damage that i had to repair by hand but it was well worth the efffort. I initially planned on restoring this and a Bolt 1 to ad to my case collection library but I liked the system so much it became the canvass for my new computer!

Assembled a computer for a friend today. Intel D975XBX mainboard, with an Intel Core2Duo E6600, 2GB of Mushkin DDR2-800 RAM, nVidia 7900GT 512MB video, WD Raptor main drive and a huge ass Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX heatsink and fan.

This is the mainboard of the Solar GPS Logger, after an attempt at reflow soldering. A couple bridged pins on the microcontroller, but otherwise, pretty successful.
